The lcatin f an emergency is the mst imprtant piece f infrmatin in any 911 call. But many peple in emergency may nt be able t tell peratrs (接线员) which flr they’re n in a high-rise building. There are a lt f reasns fr this. They culd be injured r simply cnfused. Yet precius minutes are wasted when emergency persnnel r rescue wrkers have t search a building t find a persn in need. With a new app called Sensry, the call taker, the first persn t answer a 911 call, sn may be able t use a caller’s smartphne t lcate (定位) the persn’s exact psitin in a building.
Clumbia University researchers William Falcn and Henning Schulzrinne used a tw-step prcess t create Sensry. First, they used all existing smartphne features t narrw dwn a caller’s lcatin. All iPhnes, which were prduced after 2014, already include GPS and altimeter (高度表). They can help call takers t decide if a persn is utdrs r inside a building. But when it cmes t tall buildings, just knwing a persn’s altitude (海拔高度) may nt be enugh, because the distance (距离) between flrs changes frm ne building t anther.
S Falcn and Schulzrinne analysed the plans f finding ut the average distance between flrs in residential buildings (居民楼) and ffice buildings amng mre than 1,000 buildings in New Yrk City. They tested their app in 63 experiments in five high-rise buildings and fund that it culd find a caller’s lcatin within tw flrs with abut a 91 percent accuracy (准确度).
In a survey cnducted by Find Me 911 this year, dispatchers, wh are respnsible fr sending ut peple r vehicles t where they are needed, said they always received calls frm peple in need and they ften culdn’t share their lcatin. They smetimes accidentally give the wrng address r flr number. Sme callers are t yung t knw their address. Dispatchers als received calls frm thse wh are deaf r have hearing prblems and they ften culdn’t hear the peratr’s questins.
The new Sensry app culd help cut dwn the precius time it takes first respnders t get t the peple in need. And it culd make the difference between life and death.

After years f shcking images f huge fields filled with abandned (被遗弃的) tents and rubbish in the aftermath (结束后的时期) f music festivals, it was encuraging t hear Glastnbury Festival rganizers say that 99% f festival-gers’ tents were picked up after the festival. This is a huge achievement. But really it shuld be nrmal.
There is a ppular belief that mst tents left behind after festivals are cllected and sld by charities r sent t gd causes. But this is nly wishful thinking: mst f them end up in landfills (填埋). The cst fr festival rganizers and charities f cllecting thusands f tents is just t high. All the parts f the tents—pegs, ples, sheets, and bags—need t be present, undamaged, and the tents clean and functinal t be reused.
After a festival, rganizers f festival typically flatten thse standing tents. This makes it even mre back-breaking t identify (识别) the tents that are reusable in a field full f them. It’s als likely they’ll be damaged in the prcess.
Accrding t research, making a typical tent creates as much as 25kg f CO2, and csts the equivalent (等量) f arund 8,750 plastic straws (塑料管) r 250 plastic cups. This is abut the same amunt f CO2 prduced by a car driving 100 miles. Tday, tents can be made ut f green materials such as cardbard. But these prducts are smetimes quite heavy and expensive.
Many festivals sell tents fr £20 r less—hardly a high price—especially when seen against the price f tickets in the UK which are ften arund £200. The images f abandned tents are mre than just a cmment n the envirnmental impacts f the festival itself. They are a symbl f ur thrwaway culture—just as images f clean fields at Glastnbury are a refreshing symbl f hpe fr what culd be. Take nthing but pictures, leave nthing but ftprints.
33. What is a cmmn misunderstanding f tents in the UK?
A. They are a must fr mst festival-gers.
B. They d harm t peple’s health.
C. They are reused after festival.
D. They make the festival experience enjyable.
34. What des the underlined wrd “back-breaking” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Imprtant.B. Dangerus.C. Difficult.D. Necessary.
35. What can we learn frm the numbers in the 4th paragraph?
A. Tents take a great deal f energy t make.
B. There is an increased demand fr tents wrldwide.
C. Carbard tents win ppularity with festival-gers.
D. Tents are much cheaper than festival tickets in the UK.
36. The authr’s purpse in writing the text is t ________.
A. intrduce ppular music festival in the UK
B. invite peple t enjy music festival in the UK
C. stress the imprtance f festival in cultural life
