At a field statin in Csta Rica, Samuel Fabian, an entmlgist frm Imperial Cllege Lndn in England and his teammates set up hanging and standing lights, and then used high-speed cameras t track wild, flying insects including mths and flies. Sme circled the lights endlessly, and thers flew sharply upward, lsing speed until they culdn’t fly any higher. When the light surce pinted up, sme insects turned arund and headed fr the grund. During the flight, the insects always kept the lights at their back even if they’d end up crashing. Crash landings were cmmn when the team lit up a white sheet n the flr. Researchers shwed rVSV△G-ZEBOV-GP was effective at reducing the risk f infectin, but n ne knew hw capable it was f preventing death in smene wh was vaccinated after becming infected during an epidemic (流行病). T figure it ut, Culbrn and her clleagues fcused their effrts n the secnd-largest Ebla utbreak ever recrded, which ccurred in the Demcratic Republic f Cng between 2018 and 2020.
“Every single Ebla health facility acrss the entire Ebla epidemic had a standardized list f all admissins,” says Culbrn. This list included 2,279 cnfirmed Ebla patients, and it recrded whether r nt each persn had been vaccinated befre they gt sick—and if s, when they’d received the vaccine.
Culbrn fund the death rate was 56% amng the unvaccinated. But fr thse wh’d received the vaccine, that rate was cut in half.
