Bilgy may nt be everything, but genes apparently have a far greater influence n human behavir than is cmmnly thught. Similarities ranging frm hbbies t bdily gesture are being fund in pairs separated at birth. Many f these behavirs are “things yu wuld never think f lking at if yu were ging t study the genetics f behavir,” says psychlgist Thmas J. Buchard, Jr. , directr f the Minnesta Center fr Twin and Adptin Research at the University f Minnesta.
Buchard reprts that s far, exhaustive psychlgical tests and questinnaires have been cmpleted with apprximately 50 pairs f identical twins reared apart, 25 pairs f fraternal twins reared apart and cmparisn grups f twins reared tgether. “We were amazed at the similarity in psture and expressive style,” says Buchard. “It’s prbably the feature f the study that’s grabbed us the mst.” Twins tend t have similar mannerisms, gestures, speed and temp in talking, habits and jkes. Many f the twins dressed in similar fashin--ne male pair wh had never previusly met arrived in England sprting identical beards, haircuts, glasses and shirts.
The mst striking example f cmmn psychpathlgy (精神病理学) hwever, came frm a pair f twins raised apart. One had been reared by his wn (pr) family the ther had been adpted int a “gd slid upper-middle-class family.” Bth are nw cnsidered t be antiscial persnalities, suffering frm lack f impulse cntrl, and bth have criminal histries. Althugh the twins share, n average, 50 percent f their genes, Buchard suggests that the verlap is prbably cnsiderably mre with this pair.
Persnality similarities between the identical twins raised apart are almst the same as they are with identical twins raised tgether, accrding t the results f a test develped by University f Minnesta psychlgist Auke Tellegen. His persnality questinnaire cntains scales such as “scial clseness,” “harm avidance” and “well-being.” The researchers were especially surprised t find that “traditinalism” --a trait implying cnservatism and respect fr authrity--can be inherited. In fact, says Buchard, his and ther studies have fund abut 11 persnality traits that appear t have significant genetic input.

Small batteries are big prblems, but nbdy really pays attentin t where they end up. Researchers at the Cellulse & Wd Materials Labratry are wrking t address this prblem. Their new research paper describes a water-activated paper battery develped frm envirnmentally friendly materials that culd eventually present a sustainable alternative t the mre harmful batteries cmmn in lw-pwer devices.
The paper battery has the same key cmpnents as standard batteries but packages them differently. Like a typical chemical battery, it has a psitively charged side called a cathde, a negatively charged side called an ande, and a cnductive material called an electrlyte (电解质) between the tw. A traditinal battery’s cmpnents are encased in plastic and metal; in the new battery, the ande and cathde are inks printed nt the frnt and back f a piece f paper. That paper is filled with salt, which disslves (溶解) when the paper is dampened with water. The resulting saltwater slutin acts as the electrlyte.
Sustainable materials were a precnditin fr the researchers, wh cnsidered nly safe and plentiful ingredients t create their device. “We were fairly cnfident that we wuld have smething that wuld wrk in the end, but develping these materials and ink systems is challenging,” says Gustav Nyström, senir authr f the study.
After trying hundreds f frmulatins fr the battery cmpnents, the researchers settled n a graphite ink t make the cathde, a zinc ink fr the ande, and salt-filled paper t create the electrlyte.
When the paper is dry, the battery is shelf-stable. Add just a cuple f drps f water, hwever, and the salt disslves, allwing electrns t flw. Once the paper is dampened, the battery activates within 20 secnds. The new battery’s perating perfrmance declines as the paper dries. When the scientists re-wet the paper during testing, the battery regained functinality and lasted an hur befre beginning t dry ut again.
Althugh the researchers demnstrated that their battery culd pwer an alarm clck, the paper batteries are unlikely t replace standard nes n stre shelves. Nyström envisins a future where these paper batteries culd make their way int prducts within the next tw t five years. “The perfrmance that yu see n this device, I think, is sufficient fr a lt f ther applicatins already,” he says. It is mstly a matter f scaling up prductin and integrating the batteries int systems such as diagnstic tests and envirnmental sensrs.”

    Tmat Changed My Life
Ding things-withut being planned was never my strength.
As a 14-year-ld, I wuld refuse t g fr walks arund the blck with my friends if I was the least bit behind in my schlwrk.
Unlike mst teenagers, I lived nt in my rm, but in an unused kitchen upstairs where I spread my bks and papers n a large rund table. I spent cnsiderable time there, wrking cntinuusly fr hurs, and my mther wrried. She wuld try t lure (引诱) me away. “Cme and watch the parade!” she wuld call frm dwnstairs. “All neighbrs are ut there!” She thught f all kinds f tricks-the swimming pl, ice cream, stray cats and turtles-t remve me frm my -studies, but nthing ever wrked.
Later, in cllege, the pattern cntinued. The library and my cllege drm replaced the unused kitchen at hme. When spring came alng friends wuld stp by my drm r peer int my library rm t persuade me t play Frisbee n the lawn. “N, I wuld almst always say.” I have t much t d.
My cllege study days were gne, but nt my need and lve fr schedules. My friends and sisters tried t keep me away frm my plans, but they were hardly ever successful.
This summer, thugh, while huse sitting fr my parents, I was persuaded t change my plans in the mst unexpected way. The sight f tmates grwing in my mther’s garden lured me ut f my tightly scheduled wrld. They drew me with the pwer f a lver’s gaze. Hundreds f them were turning ripe and red by the minute, decrating the garden like decratins n a Christmas tree.
“If I have time, I’ll make tmat sauce (番茄酱).” I tld myself. But my lng week in the huse by myself was already filled with things t d: writing, and finishing a prject that I brught hme frm the ffice.
Then, watching the fascinating tmates cntinuusly falling t the grund in ever-greater numbers, again I mentally argued abut all the things I had planned and needed t d.
    注意:
    1. 续写词数应为150左右;
    2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

A mnth later, my parents came back.
    ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

I scarched fr 20 minutes in the kitchen cabinet and pulled ut a huge white china pt. I washed the tmates, cutting away sectins that were spiled, and sliced and threw them int the pt. I swayed the watery mixture as if I were washing gld. Meanwhile, turning n the stere, I sang alng with Billy Jel and reviewed a step I’d picked up in my swing-dance class.
A mnth later, my parents came back. They fund a daughter wh had discvered the beauty f flexibility. I shared stries f my tmat adventures, and we laughed tgether. My mm, the same wman wh used t try and lure me away frm my bks, nw shared in my newfund passin fr the kitchen. As I std in the kitchen, surrunded by the rich flavur f tmat sauce, I realized the imprtance f allwing life t surprise us.
    拿起:pick up/hld up
    打开:turn n/switch n

    [高分句型2]
As I std in the kitchen, surrunded by the rich flavur f tmat sauce, I realized the imprtance f allwing life t surprise us.(运用了as引导时间状语从句,动名词作宾语)
