On the ship, which belngs t Captura, a Ls Angeles-based startup, is a system that takes int seawater and sucks ut CO2, which can be used fr varius purpses r buried. The decarbnated (不含二氧化碳的) seawater is returned t the cean, where it absrbs mre CO2 frm the atmsphere, in a small strike against the massive rise f the greenhuse gas.
After a yearlng experiment, Captura is planning t pen a 1000-tn-per-year facility that will bury the captured CO2 in rck frmatins under the Nrth Sea. Equatic, anther Ls Angeles-based startup, is launching an even larger 3650-tn-per-year cean CO2 capture plant this year in Singapre.
Supprters say capturing CO2 frm the cean shuld be easier and cheaper than a seemingly mre direct apprach: extracting it directly frm the air. Direct air capture, which relies n fans t sweep air past absrbent chemicals, currently csts between $600 t $1000 per tn f CO2 remved, largely because atmspheric CO2 is s thin, making up less than 0.05% f the air. Earth’s ceans, in cntrast, hld the gas at a cncentratin nearly 150 times higher, and absrb rughly 30% f all CO2 emissins each year. Cmpanies say they shuld ultimately be able t capture CO2 at $100 per tn, r less.
Ocean capture advcates are seeking gvernment supprt. In the US, direct air capture plants earn a $180 tax credit per tn f remved CO2, but Ocean effrts currently dn’t qualify. “A similar tax incentive (激励政策) fr water-based CO2 remval is abslutely needed,” says Ruben Brands, CEO f Equatic.
