Disappinted by my unwavering desire, the day befre Mther’s Day he called a single service, decided they were t expensive, and prmised t clean the bathrms himself. He still gave me the chice, f curse. He tld me the high dllar amunt f cmpleting the cleaning services I requested (since I cntrl the budget) and asked repeatedly if I still wanted him t bk it.
What I wanted was fr him t ask friends n Facebk fr a recmmendatin, call fur r five mre services, d the emtinal labr I wuld have dne if the jb had fallen t me. I had wanted t hire ut deep cleaning fr a while, especially since my freelance (自由职业的) wrk had picked up cnsiderably. The reasn I hadn’t dne it yet was part guilt ver nt ding my husewrk, and an even larger part f nt wanting t deal with the wrk f hiring a service. I knew exactly hw exhausting it was ging t be. That’s why I asked my husband t d it as a gift.

One lng gray ship at the Prt f Ls Angeles is ding its part t cmbat climate change. On the ship, which belngs t Captura, a Ls Angeles-based startup, is a system that takes int seawater and sucks ut CO2, which can be used fr varius purpses r buried. The decarbnated (不含二氧化碳的) seawater is returned t the cean, where it absrbs mre CO2 frm the atmsphere, in a small strike against the massive rise f the greenhuse gas.
After a yearlng experiment, Captura is planning t pen a 1000-tn-per-year facility that will bury the captured CO2 in rck frmatins under the Nrth Sea. Equatic, anther Ls Angeles-based startup, is launching an even larger 3650-tn-per-year cean CO2 capture plant this year in Singapre.
Supprters say capturing CO2 frm the cean shuld be easier and cheaper than a seemingly mre direct apprach: extracting it directly frm the air. Direct air capture, which relies n fans t sweep air past absrbent chemicals, currently csts between $600 t $1000 per tn f CO2 remved, largely because atmspheric CO2 is s thin, making up less than 0.05% f the air. Earth’s ceans, in cntrast, hld the gas at a cncentratin nearly 150 times higher, and absrb rughly 30% f all CO2 emissins each year. Cmpanies say they shuld ultimately be able t capture CO2 at $100 per tn, r less.
Ocean capture advcates are seeking gvernment supprt. In the US, direct air capture plants earn a $180 tax credit per tn f remved CO2, but Ocean effrts currently dn’t qualify. “A similar tax incentive (激励政策) fr water-based CO2 remval is abslutely needed,” says Ruben Brands, CEO f Equatic.
Even if the technlgy takes ff, it will have t scale up massively t make a meaning cntributin in ffsetting (抵消) glbal emissins. Accrding t the Intergvernmental Panel n Climate Change, by 2050 we will need t remve sme 5 billin tns f CO2 every year t limit the glbal temperature increase t 1.5℃. S far, the cean capture cmpanies are pulling ut nly thusands f tns. Matthew Eisaman, a chief scientist at Captura, says, “We have an enrmus challenge ahead f us.”
8. Hw des the system in para. 1 wrk?
A. It cnverts seawater int CO2.
B. It releases CO2 int the atmsphere.
C. It absrbs seawater and extracts CO2.
D. It stres decarbnated seawater n the ship.
9. What makes extracting CO2 frm the cean easier and cheaper?
A. CO2 in seawater is mre absrbent.
B CO2 is stred in slid frm in seawater.
C. CO2 in the cean is mre readily accessible.
D. CO2 is naturally mre cncentrated in seawater.
10. What is the Ruben Brands’s attitude tward the new frm f capturing technlgy?
A. Dubtful.B. Objective.C. Supprtive.D. Indifferent.
11. What wuld be the best title f the passage?
A. Cmbining Ocean CO2 Capture with Air Capture
B. Setting a New Example f Climate Change Slutin
C. Analyzing Ocean CO2 Capture against Climate Change
D. Explring Oceanic Slutins fr Reducing CO2 Emissins

This is ging t sund weird, but I want yu t lk clsely fr a mment at yur thumbs. See hw they bend flexibly frwards as well as back. The human thumb is nt just a device fr giving the thumbs-up sign r fr picking up drpped keys. It is als ne f the mst efficient and sensitive tls in existence fr determining the ripeness f fruit.
Hwever, mst f us dn’t use them that way anymre. One f the mst striking things abut eating in the mdern wrld is that we act as if we were sense-blind. Our nses can distinguish fresh milk frm sur milk, and yet we prefer t lk at the use-by date rather than sniffing. Senses, wrte the late anthrplgist Jack Gdy, are “ur windws n the wrld” —the main tls thrugh which humans acquire infrmatin abut ur envirnments.
But tday, we have yielded many f the functins f ur wn senses t the mdern fd industry — which suits that industry just fine. A survey f 7,000 yung peple in 2011 fund that mst f them wuld be hypthetically (假设地) prepared t give up their sense f smell if it meant that they culd keep their laptp r phne.
In reality, it is nt easy t live withut a sense f smell. Accrding t the survey data prduced by Fifth Sense, mre than half f the respndents having smell lss said that cking had becme a surce f stress and anxiety because they culd n lnger experience the jy f trying new recipes, and culd nt easily tell when smething was burned, which even increases feelings f lneliness and depressin and leads t the breakdwn f relatinships.
N human activity is mre multi-sensry than eating, but t eat in the mdern wrld is ften t eat in a state f prfund sensry disengagement. We rder grceries n a cmputer, r takeaways n a phne, and they arrive wrapped in plastic, s that we can neither smell them nr see them befre we take the first muthful.
12. In which way we mstly dn’t use ur thumbs accrding t the authr?
A. Squeeze a fig.B. Push a buttn.C. Hld a frk.D. Pick a key.
13. Why des the authr mentin the survey in 2011?
A. T shw the addictin t the Internet.
B. T fcus n the senseless yung peple.
C. T highlight the ignrance abut senses.
D. T intrduce a ppular and mdern lifestyle.
14. What des the paragraph 4 mainly talk abut?
A. Daily trubles f sense lss.B. An uneasy wrld withut senses.
C. Mental cncerns abut sense lss.D. The rbbed pleasure f cking fd.
15. What makes peple lse sensry cnnectin with fd?
A. A fast-paced mdern lifestyle.B. Lessening interests abut fd.
C The develpment f cmputers.D. The cnvenient packaging technlgy.

I lved the spelling bee (拼字比赛). I trained every day after schl, the dictinary pages rippling sftly in the breeze. But I had never thught my arch-enemy in the spelling bee culd becme my friend.
Opening my eyes n Friday mrning, I felt the hairs n my arm stand up. I glanced at my alarm clck — it’s nly 6:27. I usually wke up at 7:01, which meant I had an extra thirty-fur minutes t study. I was the best spellers in my class. I wanted t win the bee at Meadwbrk Middle Schl and beat my arch-enemy, Nathan Frtescue.
Nathan just read many science and math bks. Really, he wasn’t a speller at heart — he’s a mathematician. Nathan and I had nthing in cmmn except being gd spellers, but since he’s a gd speller withut even trying, it didn’t cunt.
I walked int the kitchen, finding Dad cking breakfast. He served me sme prridge. I thanked him and tld him the spelling test and my anxiety. My father gave me a quiz. Thse wrds “dexterus, sesquipedalian, truncate” didn’t truble me at all. Finally came the wrd “judgment”. “Easy, J-U-D-G-E-M-E-N-T.” I answered quickly, withut any thught.
Dad shk his head. Nt believing in him, I headed fr my rm, referred t the dictinary and marched back with a frwn. Befre parting, he tld me that I shuld thank him, because I wuld prbably get the wrd in the test.
As sn as I shut the classrm dr behind me, I heard a vice frm the back f the rm. “Yu are lking pale nw, and I’m afraid that yu may miss the spelling bee.” Nathan smiled as he clsed a giant bk with dancing numbers n the cver.
“I bet a literature wrd will make yu ut n the first rund.” I replied.
As Ms. Hawking walked int the rm, she explained the rules—ne missed, and yu were ut—and the spelling test began. After fur runds, nly Nathan and I were left. “Olivia, yur wrd is ‘algrithm.’” said Ms. Hawking. I hadn’t heard that wrd befre, but I spelt it A-L-G-O-R-H-Y-H-M.
