That’s why we shuld stp defining urselves as fixed identities and nuns, and instead start describing urselves using verbs.
Wrds are pwerful. Linguistic research shws that language shapes peple and culture; it can als give us insight int urselves and ur behavir. In a well-knwn study, researchers Rbert Rsenthal and Lenre Jacbsen had all students in the same elementary schl take a standard IQ test. Then they randmly selected a grup f students, regardless f their test results, and tld teachers the grup wuld shw “dramatic intellectual grwth”. Eight mnths later, thse students scred significantly higher n an IQ test. The study cncluded that teachers’ psitive perceptin f students crrelated t thse students’ high perfrmance n intellectual and academic tests. They dn’t lay claim t ur entire identity, but they acknwledge that we are peple first and fremst, nt whatever a singular nun may say we are. S, instead f saying, “I am a prcrastinatr (拖拉者)”, yu shuld say, “I am a persn wh ften prcrastinates.”
By fcusing n ur behavirs, nt fixed characteristics, we can release harmful perceptins f urselves that hld us back frm trying methds that might imprve ur lives — like thse that can help us achieve the critical skill f being indistractable.
