Scientists have lng wndered hw baleen whales can sing while hlding their breath Experts already knew that baleen whales have a special larynx (喉) that enables them t sing. l but they didn’t knw exactly hw they prduced sund.
“Yu can’t just g dwn a baleen whale and see what they’re ding when they’re singing,” jkingly says Jy Reidenberg, a prfessr wh studies whales. Abve all, dead whales are usually destryed by natural chemical prcesses t quickly t cllect living tissue samples.
Three yung whales which happened t apprach the shre clse t his lab enabled lead authr Cen Elenans t simulate (模拟) what happens when the animals prduce sund. Thev’d assumed that the inner edges f the whales’ vcal crds (声带) rub tgether t make sund, but the experiment revealed the vcal crds rub against a fat part at the back f the larynx.
Reidenberg thinks the sample size f the study just three animals is t small fr such a generalizatin, and that scientists need t examine mre samples, Heidi Pearsn, prfessr f marine bilgy at University f Alaska Sutheast, agrees, She’d like t see a different family f whales examined fr cmparisn, as the three individuals studied were all yung whales.
Elemans says he wants t study adult males, which are knwn fr their singing. But the experts acknwledge the challenge in ding s, “Just getting thse samples is n great achievement in its wn right,” says Pearsn.
The researchers did anther study. They used 3-D cmputer simulatins t recreate what happens when the whales’ larynx muscles are activated. They discvered these structures cannt prduce sund at higher frequencies than 300 hertz (Hz), r belw depths f abut 330 feet.
“Unfrtunately, that depth and frequency range verlap (重叠) almst perfectly with what humans make,” says Elemans, meaning they may struggle t cmpete with nise generated by ships, which send ut sunds between 30 and 300 Hz.
“That’s why the study emphasizes an urgent need t decrease nise pllutin by limiting shipping traffic, setting up slw znes, prtecting areas with lts f vcalizing whales, making ships quieter,” says Reidenberg, “and using real-time data in cnservatin plans.”
    28. What is the challenge f studying hw baleen whales prduce sund?
    A. Dealing with dead whales’ tissues.B. Getting suitable samples fr study.
    C. Simulating the whales’ vcal crds.D. Analyzing 3-D cmputer simulatins.
    29. What is Heidi Pearsn’s attitude twards the first study?
    A. Dubtful.B. Admiring.C. Unclear.D. Optimistic.
    30. What can we infer frm the secnd study?
    A. Ships n the sea frequently run int baleen whales.
    B. Baleen whales enjy cmpeting with mankind n sund.
    C. Baleen whales’ vcal crds rub tgether t make sund.
    D. Human-made sunds affect baleen whales’ prducing sund.
    31. What des Jy Reidenberg suggest ding at last?
    A. Ships are suppsed t make way fr vcalizing whales.
    B. Mre data shuld be cllected t analyze nise pllutin.
    C. Making plans t d further search n baleen whales’ habitat.
    D. Taking measures t cut nise pllutin fr whale cnservatin.

Snia Keeper, an experienced surfer and instructr, explains that the insights prvided by the survey have mtivated surfing rganizatins t expand their reach and cnnect with an even brader cmmunity f surfers. “If life-saving skills are rlled ut (正式推出) t the brader castal surfer cmmunities arund the wrld, this preparatin can help ensure that a gd day at the beach desn’t turn int a sad ne,” she adds.

    D. T appeal fr helping each ther at beaches
