Scientists have knwn fr years that plants respnd t sunds arund them. Fr example, flwers make sweeter nectar (花蜜) t the sund f buzzing bees. But nw scientists in Israel have shwn that plants als seem t be ding sme “talking”.
Prfessr Lilach Hadany and her team at Tel Aviv University set up micrphnes t recrd tmat and tbacc plants under different cnditins. Their recrdings revealed that the plants made ultrasnic sunds (超声波) .
It's nt clear hw the plants make the sunds. One idea is that air bubbles (气泡) frm inside the plant's stem, and that these ppping bubbles make a clicking sund. It's als nt clear if the plants are making the sunds n purpse. Smetimes peple's knees creak, t, but they're nt ding it n purpse.
But the plants are definitely making nise, and creating much mre nise when they're stressed than when they're nt.
In fact, the researchers trained an Artificial Intelligence (AI) system t identify the different kinds f clicking sunds. The system was able t tell the difference between plants that needed water and plants with cuts abut 70% f the time.
The result suggests that researchers may ne day be able t use a plant's sunds t figure ut when it is having truble, and what truble it is having. They hpe that culd be very helpful t farmers.
The new discvery raises many mre questins. One imprtant questin is: D plants make sunds t cmmunicate with each ther?
Other research has shwn that plants d seem t cmmunicate in sme ways. Plants being attacked by insects send chemicals int the air. Sn, nearby plants that haven't been attacked yet start t make ther chemicals that dn't taste gd t insects. It's pssible that the ultrasnic sunds culd wrk in a similar way.
Anther big questin is: Is anything listening t the plants? Dr. Hadany pints ut that mice and mths, fr example, depend n plants, and can hear ultrasnic frequencies. The clicks may tell these animals when a plant isn't healthy, s they can avid it.
The team's research has already changed ur ideas abut plants. As Dr. Hadany says, “Even in a quiet field, there are actually sunds that we dn't hear, and thse sunds carry infrmatin.”
28. Why des the authr mentin flwers in Paragraph 1?
A. T prve plants can hear the sunds. B. T shw plants make ultrasnic sunds.
C. T make a cmparisn with ther plants. D. T aruse the readers' interest in the text.
29. Hw d the plants pssibly cmmunicate with each ther?
A. The plants cnvey infrmatin by tuch. B. The attacked plants make ultrasnic sunds.
C. The attacked plants send pr-taste chemicals. D. The wind blws the dr f the attacked plants.
30. What's the purpse f the researchers?
A. T prve plants can talk. B. T make a new discvery.
C. T prmte plants' better grwth. D. T have mre knwledge f plants.
31. Which f the fllwing is a suitable title fr the text?
