Richard Feynman was arguably the secnd best knwn physicist after Einstein. But she is nt the nly distinguished scientist in the Feynman family.
Brn in 1927, Jan Feynman grew up in Queens, New Yrk, alngside her lder brther Richard. He wuld becme Jan’s first teacher and smene wh helped develp her curius nature, believing her capable f learning all the math and science he culd teach her. She wuld try t slve math prblems fr the unique reward f getting t pull her brther’s hair and serving as his “lab assistant” at the age f five. Fr her furteenth birthday, Richard gave Feynman a cpy f Astrnmy by Rebecca Hrace Baker, a cllege-level physics text, which bth taught her abut physics and what was pssible. Feynman credited it fr prving t her that wmen culd indeed have a career ding science.
Feynman wuld g n t receive a bachelr’s degree frm Oberlin Cllege, befre she attended Syracuse University, studying cndensed matter thery and earning a PhD in 1958. By 1960, Feynman was married with tw children and she decided t take a break frm physics t take n the rle f hmemaker.
The break was shrt-lived, as Feynman grew depressed frm keeping a hme and caring fr tw small children. In 1962, at the advice f a psychlgist, she went in search f emplyment, securing three jb ffers at multiple institutes. At Lamnt, where she wrked part-time, Feynman began her research int Earth’s magnetsphere, identifying its shape.
Over the curse f her career, Feynman made many breakthrughs in furthering the understanding f slar wind and its interactin with the Earth’s magnetsphere. As authr r c-authr f mre than 185 papers, Feynman’s research accmplishments range frm discvering the shape f the Earth’s magnetsphere t identifying the rigin f aurras. In 1974, she wuld becme the first wman ever elected as an fficer f the American Gephysical Unin, and in 2000 she was awarded NASA’s Exceptinal Scientific Achievement Medal.
“Jan Feynman leaves a wealth f scientific accmplishments, having made imprtant cntributins,” said APS CEO Kate Kirby. “Despite being discuraged t pursue science by scial expectatins, she persevered, and her accmplishments serve as an inspiratin t wmen wh wish t pursue a career in science.”

In 1999, David Dunning and Justin Kruger did a series f studies evaluating peple’s cmpetence in certain areas, including grammar, humr and lgic. The peple in the studies were asked t evaluate their wn abilities in each area. Dunning and Kruger fund that peple wh scred lw n the tests have the tendency t verestimate their abilities, indicating that peple wh lack skills tend t lack the ability t realize their shrtcmings.
This principle has becme knwn as the Dunning-Kruger effect. It ccurs because nly when peple have skills in a given area are they equipped t evaluate their wn skills. Admittedly, mst peple are vercnfident in their abilities. They want t believe that they are mre capable, knwledgeable and even superir t thers, and when smene really wants smething t be true, it can be hard fr them t admit that it isn’t. By the way, the ppsite f the Dunning-Kruger effect als happens: capable peple have a mre accurate view f their wn abilities, and smetimes they even underestimate themselves.
It’s tempting (吸引人的) t think f the Dunning-Kruger effect as a prblem. Peple may even laugh at thse wh think themselves mre cmpetent than they truly are, but everyne has areas where they lack cmpetence, and the Dunning-Kruger effect means they may be relatively bad at self-evaluatin in thse areas. Even if smene is very intelligent in general, there are still things they dn’t knw much abut. Expertise in ne area cannt always be transferred t ther areas.
That’s why it’s imprtant t keep digging fr infrmatin even when yu think yu’ve fund answers. It can als be helpful t check yur ideas with ther peple. Receiving negative feedback can hurt, but if yu’re willing t listen, it can help yu grw. Even just keeping in mind that the Dunning-Kruger effect exists can help yu stay mdest, accept criticism and, thus, keep learning thrughut yur life.
28.What did Dunning and Kruger find in their research?
A.Unskilled peple tend t think t much f themselves.
B.Skilled peple are usually mre humrus and lgical.
C.Self-evaluatin makes peple mre lgical in sme areas.
D.Knwledgeable peple smetimes think they are superir t thers.
29.What des the authr think f the Dunning-Kruger effect?
A.Cmplicated.B.Prblematic.C.Universal.D.Dismissive.
30.What can we d t avid the Dunning-Kruger effect accrding t the text?
A.Evaluate yurself n a regular basis.B.Remain humble and eager fr knwledge.
C.Be yurself and ignre negative feedback.D.Make friends with intelligent individuals.
31.Where is this text prbably frm?
A.A bilgy textbk.B.A bk review.
C.A feature reprt.D.A.psychlgy jurnal.

The clrful anemnefish (海葵鱼), als knwn as clwnfish, pssesses a cheerful and carefree image amng humans. Hwever, their actual behavir might nt always align with the family-friendly prtrayal seen in a Pixar film. They can aggressively defend their territry against ther anemnefish they perceive as threats.
T investigate hw these fish identify grup members, a team frm Japan cnducted tw experiments with lab-raised cmmn clwnfish that had never encuntered any ther species.
In the first experiment, researchers intrduced different species f anemnefish, distinguishable by the number f white bars n their bdies, int a tank in small cases. They bserved that the cmmn clwnfish were particularly hstile tward members f their wn species that displayed three white bars. These fish fught 80 percent f their specific-targeted fish fr up t three secnds. In cntrast, invaders frm ther species, like the range skunk clwnfish with n side bars and a white line alng its back, were barely attacked. The tw-barred Clarke’s clwnfish and three-barred saddleback clwnfish were “mildly bullied”, accrding t the team.
During the secnd experiment, the researchers expsed a clny f clwnfish t varius plastic discs. The discs were painted with anemnefish clratin and measured the level f aggressin twards these artificial mdels. Similar t reactins t live fish, mdels with tw bars were less frequently attacked, and thse withut any bars saw the least aggressin. Accrding t study c-authr and eclgist Kina Hayashi, the findings “suggest that clwnfish is capable f cunting the number f bars t recgnize the species f the invader”.
The team als fund that a rigid hierarchy (社会等级) within clwnfish clnies determines which specific fish attack the invader. Earlier studies have shwn that the scial psitin f the clwnfish is determined by very slight differences in size. This study used fish that had nt matured and were in a lab setting, but the team still bserved the same size-based hierarchy. The largest clwnfish led the charge against the invader.
32.What des the underlined wrd “hstile” mean in the third paragraph?
A.Unfriendly.B.Tlerant.C.Patient.D.Sympathetic.
33.Hw is the study cnducted?
A.By intrducing a new cncept.B.By cmparing different clwnfish.
C.By bserving clwnfish’ behavirs.D.By analyzing statistics f previus studies.
34.What is the finding f the tw experiments?
A.Clwnfish can’t reach maturity in a lab setting.
B.Skunk clwnfish is the mst mdest clwnfish.
C.The scial psitin f a clwnfish depends n its size.
D.Clwnfish identify threats by the number f vertical bars.
35.Which is the best title f the passage?
A.Barred and Bullied: Attacks frm Anemnefish.
B.Clwnfish and Cnflicts: Strict Scial Hierarchies.
C.Beynd the Screen: The identificatin f Clwnfish.
D.Frm Lab t Tank: Aggressin Amng Anemnefish.
