A.” The rest f it, he plitely suggested, lked like “chicken scrawl”.
Lking at the pstcard dispassinately, I unwillingly admit that he has a pint. All the m’s and n’s run tgether, and the l’s lk like l’s. The a’s are indistinguishable frm the q’s. S, frm nw n, I'm taking their advice and using blck letters t cmmunicate.

Sleep-deprived human parents knw the value f a quick nap, but it turns ut Chinstrap penguins have us all beat. When nesting, these Antarctic birds take fur-secnd-lng “micrsleeps,” a strategy that allws parents t keep cnstant watch ver vulnerable eggs and chicks, all while amunting t 11 hurs f ttal sleep a day, accrding t a new study.
It’s hard t sleep in a clny f nesting Chinstrap penguins. The Antarctic summer sun prvides 24/7 daylight, illuminating thusands f nisy birds. And then there’s the eye-watering smell f ammnia (氨气) mixed with rtting fish and penguin wastes. “It made me dizzy,” says c-study leader Wn Yung Lee, a researcher at the Krea Plar Research Institute.
Like ther penguins, Chinstrap parents take turns guarding the nest. While ne bird prtects the chicks—usually tw—the partner hunts at sea. Then the penguins trade places. Fr tw mnths between egg laying and fledging, it’s a series f nnstp demands.
T study hw penguins manage t accmplish all this and get the necessary sleep, Lee and his team first stuck bilggers, small battery-pwered devices, t the backs f 14 nesting penguins f bth sexes. This device functins like a smartwatch, measuring physical activity, pulse, and the cean depths f hunting birds. Next, the team captured each f the penguins, anesthetizing(麻醉) them t attach the devices and temprarily implant electrdes int their skull t measure brain activity. When an animal is awake, the brain cnstantly buzzes with activity. During sleep, hwever, brain waves slw dwn and stretch ut. When Lee started reviewing the data, he was surprised t discver the birds slept in fur-secnd intervals thrughut the day and night while caring fr their egg r chick.
While the data is cnvincing, Cirelli, a neurscientist at the University f Wiscnsin wh wasn’t invlved in the study, ntes that the researchers nly studied the penguins during nesting perids, making it impssible t tell if the birds micrsleep when they’re nt parenting. The ther challenge is understanding hw micrsleep impacts the brains and bdies f the penguins. Sleep deprivatin in humans causes a range f health prblems, and it’s nt clear whether penguins experience this, t.
Since Chinstraps sleep in slightly lnger stretches while diving fr fd and after they return t land, Lee says that micrsleep may be just a shrt-term cping strategy fr tired mms and dads.

A.They stuck smartwatches t the back f penguins.
B.They recrded penguins’ waking and sleep duratin.
C.They captured the penguins and attached devices int their nests.
