Drew Lanham grew up n the farm his grandfather built in the 1920s. Lanham, nw 54, says his father felt a respnsibility t stay n the land and care fr the animals and crps planted there. "I saw my father thrugh the land, and I saw the land as my father's heart," he said.
As a kid, he remembers being attracted by the wildlife he wuld encunter n the shrt walk between his parents' farm and his grandparents' huse. Even thugh the jurney was less than a quarter-mile, he recalled, back then it "seemed like a thusand miles".
Abve all, he was captivated(迷住) by the birds."Frm a very early age, I believed that I wuld be smene wh studied birds-wh smehw fund a way t fly,"Lanham said. As a student studying engineering at Clemsn University, it was a trip t the farm that helped him circle back t his lve f birds. "I can remember cming back hme, and all f these wnderful frests that I'd grwn up in had been cleared away. And lsing that land was like lsing my father all ver again," he said. Lanham's father had died years befre.
Thugh much f their hme had been destryed, sme wildlife remained. "I remember when I drve n the dirt rad, I heard birds singing. It was the mst hpeful thing fr me," he said. Over the last five mnths, lcal and reginal cmpetitins have been held acrss Kenya fr Maasai men f"warrir(勇士)"age. They are part f the Maasai Olympics, which have been held every tw years since 2012. These men cmpete in six events: 5,000m, 800m, 200m, high jump, javelin and the rungu(a wden thrwing club) thrw. There are als tw events fr wmen: 1,500m and 100m.
December 15,2018 marked the final rund with crwds gathering in Kimana, near the Ambseli Natinal Park, abut 200 km suth f Nairbi(the capital f Kenya). Different kinds f medals are amng the prizes fr the winning individuals and cmmunities.
Internatinal charity Brn Free, a main spnsr f the events, helped t ffer Maasai warrirs an alterative t killing lins as part f their traditinal ceremny. It was the brainchild f the wildlife charity Big Life Fundatin and eight Maasai elders wh wanted t"stp lin hunting by ur warrirs nce and fr all, making it a cultural tab(禁忌)."
"As human ppulatins grw, and ur wants seem t increase—with little sympathy fr thse ther species with whm we share the planet—the pressing need fr c-existence, and examples f hw this may be achieved. are few and far between," said Brn Free's CEO Hward Jnes.
"The Maasai have a 500-year-ld traditin f hunting lins t prve the curage f yung men. As a result, an estimated 2,000 lins nw remain in Kenya. The Maasai live and wrk alngside these creatures, s they are expected t play a key rle in their prtectin and cnservatin," added Jnes.

Injuries that happen while walking a dg can result in life-changing circumstances and such accidents are increasing, accrding t a study published in the medical jurnal JAMA Surgery.
The study lked at patients wh made visits t hspital emergency departments thrughut the United States frm 2004 t 2017.Researchers said that there were mre than 32,000 emergency rm cases f fractures(骨折) assciated with walking leashed(用皮带束缚的) dgs amng peple 65 and lder. Cases increased frm 1.671 ER visits in 2004 t 4,396 in 2017.
Accrding t the study, nearly 80 percent f the patients have been wmen, whse generally lwer bne density(密度) than that in men may be a reasn. Being female means yu are mre likely t suffer fractures and bne disease, such as steprsis(骨质疏松症). Susan Bush, 69, says she has been injured multiple times while walking her dgs, including suffering a brken leg while trying t prevent her dg frm running after a bear that came ut f the wds near her Pennsyivania cttage, But despite this, she refuses t give up her pets. "Dgs are ur sulmates," she says.
Sme senirs may be underrating the physical risks invlved in walking a dg every day, says Dr. Jaim Ahn, a lead authr f the study. In mst cases, Ahn blames what he called a"small persn/big dg"scenari(情景), where there is a disparity between a pet and its wner's ability t handle it. He als says that sme senirs might nt be as prepared t handle a pet as they shuld be. "Sme f them are really well-trained, but thers are really prly trained," he says.
The researchers suggest that clinicians wrk with patients wh use dg walking as exercise t reduce the risk f injury. That culd include training dgs nt t make sudden mvements when leashed and suggesting smaller types f dgs.
