"Instead f frce-grwing a tree fr 50 years and then cutting it dwn and making it int smaller and smaller bits…the idea is t grw the tree int the shape that yu want directly. It’s like a kind f 3D printing, "said Gavin.
Part f the inspiratin fr the idea came when Gavin was a yung by. He sptted an vergrwn bnsai tree(盆栽) which lked like chair.
The 44-year-ld began experimenting in 2006. In 2012, Gavin and Alice set up the cmpany Full Grwn. Within several years, the cuple develped the mst effective way t shape a tree withut limiting its grwth. They guided shts(嫩枝)already heading in the right directin, rather than frce them the wrng way against their natural grwth.
The average chair takes six t nine years t grw-and anther year t dry ut. The labr and time invlved in prducing the rganic pieces means they d nt cme cheap. Chairs sell fr £10,000 each, lamps fr £900 t £2,300 and tables fr £2,500 t £12,500.

The term "pseud-wrking" is used t describe hw many f us study. The pseud-wrker lks and feels like smene wh is wrking hard—he r she spends a lng time in the library and is nt afraid t push n late int the night—but because f a lack f fcus and cncentratin, he r she desn't actually accmplish much.
This phenmenn can be seen n mst cllege campuses. Fr example, at Dartmuth there was a sectin f the main library that was pen twenty-fur hurs a day, and the students I used t see there late at night crwded in grups, drinking cffee. They were definitely pseud-wrking. The rmmate wh flips thrugh her chemistry ntes n the cuch while watching TV is pseud-wrking.

It never crsses their mind that there might be a better way. Straight-A students, n the ther hand, knw all abut pseud-wrking. They fear it. It nt nly wastes time, but als is mentally tiring.
In fact, the mst imprtant skill in becming a straight-A student is the ability t get wrk dne quickly and with a minimum f wasted effrt. Sme cgnitive science research cncludes that abut fifty minutes is the ptimal learning perid t maximize the material amunt integrated per time unit. S hw d these students achieve this gal? T understand their secret t success, cnsider the fllwing simple frmula (公式) :wrk accmplished=time spent × intensity f fcus.
Pseud-wrking features a very lw intensity f fcus. Therefre, t accmplish smething by pseud-wrking, yu need t spend a lt f time. The straight-A apprach n the ther hand, increases intensity in rder t use less time.
12.Which f the fllwing phenmena is NOT pseud-wrking?
A.Alex takes an nline class while having snacks at a study lunge.
B.Lucy spends a lng time in the library n her essay while listening t music.
C.Emily and Sara read their favrite bks as they talk abut entertainment news.
D.Nick is busy taking ntes while attending a training curse in an academic hall.
13.What's the majr prblem f mst students cmpared with straight-A students?
A.They are unaware f the fact that they are pseud-wrking.
B.They have never thught abut hw t imprve their study efficiency.
C.They are ding smething t harm their brain's ability t think clearly.
D.They are willing t spend much time studying in a distracting envirnment.
14.What des the underlined wrd "ptimal" mean in paragraph 5?
A.Least.B.Best.C.Delicate.D.Accurate.
15.What des the authr want t stress by mentining the frmula?
A.The length f time spent n study cunts.
