When micr plastics end up in fields, they can damage plant grwth. But tw yung researchers nw reprt cmbining fungi (真菌) with certain farm wastes can partly address that prblem.
May Shin aged 20 had desired t explre hw micr plastics might affect the ecsystem. Jiwn Chi aged 18 was crazy abut plants and fungi. They met in a research design class at the Fryeburg Academy, a high schl in Maine and teamed up t find ut the impact f lng-lived plastics n farm crps.
Scientists have shwn certain fungi can aid rt grwth and a plant’s nutrient uptake. Thse rganisms are named arbuscular mycrrhizal fungi (AMF). Farm wastes knwn as mushrm substrate (基质) can prvide nutrients t plants and help stabilize their rts.
May and Jiwn planted ver 2,000 scallin (大葱) seeds in pts f sil. Half the seeds gt sil plluted with micr plastics. The rest grew in plastic-free sil. The plants then were further divided int fur grups. The tw yung added AMF t the sil in ne grup. Anther grup had a tp layer f mushrm substrate. A third grup gt bth treatments. The last grup gt nne. Fr three weeks, the pair tracked hw many scallins spruted (发芽) in each grup and measured the plants’ height nce each week.
Abut twice as many scallins spruted in clean sil in cmparisn t that cntaining plastic bits. But amng plants surviving in the plluted sil, a cmbinatin f AMF and mushrm substrate helped them ut. Thse getting bth treatments grew 5.4 centimeters per week. That was faster than either f the treatments alne r thse getting nne.
They then lked at the rts with a micrscpe. Where AMF had been added, it grew int thse rts. That increased the scallin rts’ surface area, thus prmting their uptake f nutrients. “I see this prject as a pssible sustainable slutin fr plant grwth in plluted sils,” said May.
8.What’s the gal f May and Jiwn’s cperatin?
A. T explre the effect f micr plastics n ecsystem.
B. T find ut the bnd between fungi and crps.
C. T see hw micr plastics influence crps.
D. T test whether crps can grw in plluted sil.
9.Why is the prcess f the test described in detail in Para.4?
A. T aruse readers’ interest in the prcess f the test.
B. T help readers better understand the prcess f the test.
C. T measure the grwth f scallin seeds mre accurately.
D. T make the result f the test mre cnvincing.
10.What can be cncluded frm the findings f the tw yung’s test?
A. Plants grw better in plluted sil with AMF and farm wastes than in clean sil.
B. Plants grw better in clean sil than in sil cntaining micr plastics.
C. AFM enables seeds t sprut mst in plluted sil than in clean sil.
D. Farm wastes help seeds sprut mst in clean sil than in plluted sil.
11.Hw can AMF help plant grwth?
A. By prviding mre nutrients t plants.
B. By expsing the plants’ rts t a larger area.
C. By increasing the deep area f plants’ rts.
D. By stabilizing the rts f the plants.

Palari Hmes, fr instance, estimates that prefabricating its prducts reduces the number f lrry jurneys sufficiently t cut tw tnnes ff the amunt f carbn dixide released per hme. If successful, building by 3D printing is likely t spread beynd husing. Opprtunities als exist in warehusing, ffices and ther cmmercial buildings.

Fr three weeks, the pair tracked hw many scallins spruted (发芽) in each grup and measured the plants’ height nce each week.(May和Jiwn在花盆的土壤中种植了2000多大葱种子。
根据倒数第二段“Abut twice as many scallins spruted in clean sil in cmparisn t that cntaining plastic bits. But amng plants surviving in the plluted sil, a cmbinatin f AMF and mushrm substrate helped them ut. Thse getting bth treatments grew 5.4 centimeters per week. That was faster than either f the treatments alne r thse getting nne.(与含有塑料颗粒的土壤相比,清洁土壤中发芽的大葱大约是前者的两倍。但是在被污染的土壤中存活的植物中,AMF和蘑菇基质的结合对它们很有帮助。同时接受这两种处理的植物生长速度为每周5.4厘米。这比单独使用任何一种处理或完全不接受任何处理的植物生长得都要快)”可知,从两个年轻人的测试结果中可以知道,植物在干净的土壤中比在含有微塑料的土壤中生长得更好。故选B项。
11.答案:B
解析:细节理解题。根据最后一段中“They then lked at the rts with a micrscpe. Where AMF had been added, it grew int thse rts. That increased the scallin rts’ surface area, thus prmting their uptake f nutrients. “I see this prject as a pssible sustainable slutin fr plant grwth in plluted sils,” said May.(然后他们用显微镜观察了植物的根部。在添加了AMF的地方,它长进了那些根里。这增加了大葱根部的表面积,从而促进了根部对养分的吸收。“我认为这个项目有可能成为污染土壤中植物生长的可持续解决方案,”May说)”可知,AMF和蘑菇基质是通过将根暴露到更大的表面积从而使植物生长得更快。故选B项。
12.答案:D
解析:推理判断题。根据第一段“That demand shuld, thugh, sn be satisfied—fr, while it can take weeks t put up a cnventinal bricks-and-mrtar dwelling (砖混住宅), the cnstructrs behind these huses are able t build ne in less than 24 hurs.
