During winter in the Nrthern Hemisphere(半球), many cuntries have experienced freezing temperatures. Sme have claimed that the cld weather can endanger the electricity supply—namely, in the frm f wind turbine(涡轮机)failure. But as lng as they’re weatherprfed, that isn’t the case.
Peple started kicking ff ludly abut wind pwer and winter back in 2021 when Texas experienced histrically lw temperatures, and with them, a massive pwer failure. Blame was quickly placed n iced-ver wind turbines—and it turned int quite the plitical debate abut the use f renewable energy—but the prblem wasn’t with wind pwer itself. The turbines simply weren’t prepared fr such lw temperatures.
“The primary issue with the wind turbines in Texas is that such extreme cld weather was nt expected based n the histrical recrd f weather, and therefre the develpers didn’t weatherize the wind turbines,” Michael Hwland, MIT prfessr f envirnmental engineering, said. “Wind turbines perate in much clder lcatins than Texas, and dealing with icing is very straightfrward and cmmn thrugh weatherizatin.”
Accrding t internatinal design standards, wind turbines shuld be able t perate dwn t temperatures as lw as -20℃. Hwever, wind farms perate successfully in places where it can get much clder than that, like the Nrth Sea, Finland, and Sweden, the latter f which recently experienced a less-than-mild -41.6℃. In cuntries such as these, wind turbines are designed with what’s knwn as“cld-weather packages”.
Swedish pwer cmpany Skellefteå Kraft has created ne such package that’s designed t stp ice frm even getting a chance t stick t the blades(叶片). “It invlves cvering the wind turbine’s blades with a thin layer f carbn fibre which is heated when necessary t prevent ice frm frming,” the cmpany website explains. “Ice sensrs then detect when there is a risk f ice frmatin and start the de-icing system.”
Thanks t these features, turbines can keep n running in temperatures that wuld certainly put the rest f us ff wrk. The events in Texas suggest that, with the recent small increase in super cld winters, specialized weather packages might end up being a mre widespread necessity.
    28. What d we knw abut Texas in 2021?
    A. It lacked enugh wind turbines.
    B. It valued the renewable energy mre.
    C. It prepared well t fight lw temperatures.

    29. Why did the wind turbines fail in Texas?
    A. Develpers weatherized turbines.B. Wind pwer had limitatins.
    C. The weather was unexpectedly cld.D. Turbines were designed fr warmth.
    30. What is the authr’s attitude t specialized weather packages?
    A. Critical.B. Objective.C. Optimistic.D. Dubtful.
    31. In which sectin f a newspaper might the text appear?
    A. Lifestyle.B. Culture.C. Business.D. Technlgy.

The effects f the drught are als felt by the ppulatins living n the edges f the river. The level f the Amazn River has fallen by 30 centimeters each day ver the past tw weeks. Since mst fd and fuel supplies are transprted by bat, there are cncerns that this culd drive up prices and cause fd insecurity. 23. 根据文章第一句“Bk the Mbile Children’s Museum fr yu child’s birthday party!” 故选A。

根据第二段中的“But despite defeating a hst f pr-glfers, he wn’t be able t take hme the $1,512,000 prize because he is an amateur glfer.”
根据最后一段中的“The win als qualifies Dunlap t turn prfessinal at any pint”和“he has 30 days after the end…declare himself a prfessinal fr the 2026 seasn”可知,这场胜利也让Dunlap有资格在任何时候转为职业选手;他可以在2024年赛季结束后的30天内宣布自己成为2025年赛季的职业选手,或者在2025年赛季结束后的30天内宣布自己成为2026年赛季的职业选手。
根据第二段中的“Peple started kicking ff ludly abut wind pwer and winter back in 2021 when Texas experienced histrically lw temperatures, and with them, a massive pwer failure.”
根据第三段中的“‘The primary issue with the wind turbines in Texas is that such extreme cld weather was nt expected based n the histrical recrd f weather, and therefre the develpers didn’t weatherize the wind turbines’”可知,得克萨斯州的风力发电机的主要问题是,根据历史天气记录,这种极端寒冷的天气是人们始料未及的,因此开发商没有对风力发电机进行耐寒处理。
根据最后一段中的“The events in Texas suggest that, with the recent small increase in super cld winters, specialized weather packages might end up being a mre widespread necessity.”

根据第四段中Daniel Tregidg说的话“‘The past mnth in Tefé has seemed like a science-fictin climate-change descriptin’”和“‘T knw that ne has died is sad, but t see lts f dead bdies, knwing that this drught has killed ver 100 dlphins, is a tragedy.’” 故选A。
根据第五段中的“The drught has als impacted fishing, an activity that prvides fd and incme fr many families in the regin.” 故选A。
