At the end f 2019, I learned that HereAfter AI, whse gal is t let the living cmmunicate with the dead, was lking fr applicants f its new AI prject. Interested in what it was prmising, I applied t experiment the sftware n my very-much-alive parents.
At first, I thught it wuld be just a fun prject t see what was technlgically pssible. Then their health cnditin added sme urgency t the experiment. I was frightened that my parents might die since my father had been diagnsed with cancer and my mther was recently develping symptms f early Alzheimer’s disease, and that with the distance between us, I might never have the chance t say gdbye.
The first step was an interview. My parents were asked questins by a technician fr hurs—abut everything frm their earliest memries t what they believe will happen after they die. Whether thrugh illness-generated cncerns r a willingness t humr their daughter, my parents put up zer resistance. The cmpany then tk their respnses and started t create the vice assistants. A few mnths later, my virtual parents arrived via email attachment.
When I cmmunicated with them thrugh the app n my phne, my hands were shaking. I hadn’t seen my actual, real parents fr six mnths. They tld me persnal stries I’d never heard. They gave me life advice and tld me things abut their childhds, as well as my wn. It was mesmerizing.
Persnally, I have mixed feelings abut my experiment. I’m glad t have my virtual parents. They’ve enabled me t learn new things abut my parents, and it’s cmfrting t think that thse bts will be there even when my parents aren’t. On the ther hand, I can’t help but find it sad that it tk a stranger interviewing my parents fr me t prperly appreciate the cmplex peple they are. But I feel lucky t have had the chance t grasp that—and t still have the precius pprtunity t spend mre time with them and learn mre abut them, face t face, n technlgy invlved.
    24. Why did the authr initially jin the AI prject?
    A. T preserve her parents’ vice. B. T test ut the new technlgy.
    C. T learn mre abut her parents’ life. D. T remve the wrry abut her parents’ health.
    25. What can we learn abut the authr’s parents?
    A. They liked talking a lt. B. They died frm the illnesses.
    C. They prvided data fr the prject. D. They ppsed jining the prject at first.
    26. What des the underlined wrd “mesmerizing” mean in paragraph 4?
    A. Fascinating. B. Alarming. C. Inspiring. D. Entertaining.
    27. What des the authr realize at last?

    B. The real cnnectin with ur parents matters mst.
    C. The advances in AI technlgy have prs and cns.
    D. AI allws us t learn mre abut ur virtual parents.

Aviatin is a big plluter. Cutting the sectr’s impact n glbal warming is bigh n the agenda. Althugh many gvernments are regulating emissins frm cars and trucks, air transprtatin is technlgically rted in ld patterns.
Facing the reality that the sectr will keep emitting a lt, ICAO has established an internatinal carbn-trading plan—Carbn Offsetting and Reductin Scheme fr Internatinal Aviatin, r CORSIA. This encurages wide use f ffsets (抵消) : aviatin cmpanies can buy emissins credits r invest in sectrs that stre carbn, such as frestry, t allw them t carry n as nrmal. CORSIA aims t keep CO2 emissins at 2019 levels thrugh such purchases fr emissins ver that year’s baseline. ICAO predicts that increasing demand might reach 1. 7 billin tns by 2035, ptentially making aviatin the largest ffset market in the wrld.
Yet ffsetting faces a fundamental challenge: the size f the ffset requires estimating flws f warming pllutin that wuld have ccurred if the carbn-remval prject hadn’t existed, and cmparing them against flws with the prject in place. The frmer — a baseline that is unbservable — is a htbed fr shady accunting.
The vast majrity f ffsets tday and in the expected future cme frm frest-prtectin and regrwth prjects. The track recrd f reliable accunting in these industries is pr, because they lack cnvincing baselines. Even with versight, frest prjects are ften trubled by wild assumptins, fr example that trees wuld disappear cmpletely frm these areas in the absence f thse prjects, even when there are ther frest prtectins in place. Such assumptins drive up baselines and fld the market with huge vlumes f ffsets. They make it easier fr accuntants t claim a net reductin in emissins even thugh the atmsphere sees little r n benefit. These prblems are essentially unfixable. Evidence is munting that ffsetting as a strategy fr reaching net zer is a dead end.
In ur view, this apprach culd prve dangerusly narrw. Remving aviatin’s impact n glbal warming means upending the industry. The lnger that reality is verlked, the harder it will be t find effective slutins.
    28. What des aviatin refer t in the passage?
    A. A prject which needs revising. B. A resurce which needs trading.
    C. A market which needs expanding. D. An industry which needs refrming.
    29. Why shuld aviatin cmpanies buy emissins credits?
    A. T supprt the develpment f frestry. B. T earn the largest prfit in ffset market.
    C. T keep the levels f emissin unchanged. D. T make up fr emissins ver the baseline.
    30. What can we infer frm paragraph 4?
    A. T many ffsets are filling the market nw.
    B. Sme prjects may cheat t create mre ffsets.
    C. Offsetting cntributes a lt t reducing emissins.
    D. Trees wuld ttally disappear withut the prjects.
    31. What is the authr’s attitude twards the CORSIA?
    A. Disapprving. B. Cnfused. C. Favrable. D. Uncncerned.
    D
Electric vehicles (EVs) are due fr huge upgrades in driving range and charging times as new battery technlgies are intrduced. Lithium (Li) -in (锂离子) batteries culd be ut f date in a few years as alternatives like Li-sulfur, Li-air and Li-metal enter prductin. Meanwhile, quantum (量子) battery charging prmises t reduce charge times frm hurs t secnds.
Scientists at the University f Michigan have prduced a stable Li-sulfur battery using Kevlar, the material used in bdy armr, t increase the amunt it can be charged and discharged. Fibers in the Kevlar stp certain parts f lithium frm grwing between the electrdes (电极) and destrying the battery. Research grup leader Nichlas Ktv called the design “nearly perfect” in terms f capacity and efficiency. The battery can handle summer heat and winter cld extremes, and in real-wrld driving cnditins, its lifespan shuld be 1, 000 cycles r ten years.
Sulfur is a great alternative fr EVs because it is a tiny amunt f the cst f metals like what is used in Li-in battery electrdes, and there is simply mre f it. Mainstream electric cars fitted with its battery culd achieve arund 900 miles n a single charge. Battery researchers say the Li-sulfur battery’s energy density culd theretically be 10 times higher than the best Li-in battery, s it will drive further, be safer and mre envirnmentally friendly, fr less mney.
In Japan, university researchers have teamed up with a telecmmunicatins cmpany t develp a Li-air battery with an energy density (500 Wh/kg) tw t five times better than Li-in.
Newer quantum technlgies that will speed up vehicle charging times are added t these breakthrughs in battery materials and energy density. Li-metal, ften talked abut as slid-state batteries, are lng-lasting and capable f rapid charging, especially when they are paired with quantum technlgies that cnnect all the battery cells simultaneusly. And nce investments in quantum charging and batteries are made, it culd revlutinize transprt and the way we use energy wrldwide.
    32. What can we learn abut Kevlar?
    A. It will speed up vehicle charging. B. It can lengthen battery’s cycle life.
    C. It can bst EV range t 1000 miles. D. It will break dwn in extreme weather.
    33. Why is Sulfur a fantastic ptin fr EVs?
    A. It has been tested in Li-in battery.
    B. It is less expensive and mre accessible.
    C. Li-sulfur battery has been installed in mainstream EVs.
    D. Li-sulfur battery features a higher energy density than Li-metal.
    34. What can we cnclude frm the last paragraph?
    A. Quantum technlgies give rise t Li-metal.
    B. Battery materials determine vehicle charging speed.
    C. Li-metal is mre efficient in charging than Li-sulfur.
    D. Mre investments are needed in quantum technlgy.
    35. Which f the fllwing can be the best title fr the text?
    A. Which Battery Suits Evs Best?
    B. What Is The Future Rad Of EVs?
    C. Why Will Li-in Batteries Be Replaced?
    D. Hw Will Refrmed Lithium Batteries Influence Evs?
    第二节 (共5小题;每小题2. 5分,满分12. 5分)
    阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Lneliness is a bigger health threat than smking 15 cigarettes a day, accrding t newt research. Our ancestrs likely did nt suffer frm a lack f cmpanins. Why has lneliness becme such a threat? Hw might it be addressed?
In the distant past, there were few cmplaints abut lneliness. Indeed, every persn in a cmmunity including children was up t speed n every detail f the lives f everyne else. Instead f suffering frm lneliness, ur distant ancestrs were ppressed (被压迫) by a lack f privacy. 36 They facilitate distance. Hw did lneliness take ver cntemprary life?
Typically, peple mve away frm family and friends fr wrk pprtunities. Yet, cities ften functin as gatherings f relative strangers rather than functinal cmmunities. The many peple wandering arund in a city are irrelevant if we have n scial cnnectin with them. Migrants t cities may establish varius meaningful scial links. 37 These might be the peple we wrk amng, thse wh frequent a cffee shp, r members f a gym r sprts club. Such assciatins are nt made autmatically. 38 In sme cases, thse wh eagerly need scial cnnectin can fare prly in cities.
39 Accrding t the U. S. Surgen General’s Reprt n Lneliness, peple wh spend mre time nline are lnelier. Peple wh claim thusands f nline “friends” are ften chrnically anxius, discnnected and depressed. Perhaps, they wuld gain better scial bnus by being kind t peple in real life.
Virtually, nt everyne needs cnstant cmpaninship. This is nt merely a questin f hw extrverted a persn is. 40 Peple with a strng sense f external purpse barely suffer frm lneliness, whether they perfect their dance mves, get invlved in plitical activism r train service dgs. In this vein, anyne wh cultivates a lve f nature may becme a part f the natural wrld. That is an endless surce f peace, happiness, and cnnectin.
    A. Their habits cntributed t lneliness.
    B. They require penness, initiative and effrt.
    C. Rather, it reflects hw smene leads their life.
    D. Outging peple will live a busy life with scial media.
    E. Tday, scial media bring back the invasins f privacy.
    F. Many turn t scial media fr cmpaninship with mixed results.
    G. Hwever, assciatins are ften frmed thrugh accidental netwrks.
