Water pisning is caused by t much cnsumptin f water during a shrt perid f time. Water in and f itself is nt pisnus by any means, but rapid intake f a large quantity f water can break the careful balance f sdium(钠)in the bdy fluids(体液). This cntributes t a swelling f the cells, ften in the central nervus system, including the brain.
When the cells can n lnger bear the pressure, they can begin t die. This is indicated in serius frms f water pisning. Symptms f this cnditin include vmiting, headache and unrespnsiveness. When the sdium in the bld falls t dangerus levels, brain damage and pssibly death may ccur.
What is a fatal(致命的)amunt f water can vary frm persn t persn, depending n ne’s state f health, his r her physical activity at the time, the temperature and the amunt f time in which the persn cnsumes the water. Fr sme, a ne-time cnsumptin f three liters can prve deadly. Althugh the persn cnsuming the water may lse a lt f fluid during heavy labr r exercise, the electrlytes(电解质)are nt replaced fast enugh t avid water pisning.
Thse particularly at risk fr water pisning are athletes engaged in lng distance running like a marathn. Due t the need t replace large quantities f lst fluid, runners must drink a lt f water. This can lead t pisning, s runners must replace their fluids with sprts drinks that have added electrlytes. Other factrs that cntribute t water pisning include activities that stimulate heavy sweating. The persn wrking under extreme heat r intense humidity(湿气)must be careful when cnsuming water in rder t maintain electrlyte balance. Mental diseases can als lead t water pisning. Tday, petry and science are ften cnsidered t be mutually exclusive(互相排斥)career paths. But that wasn’t always the case. The mathematician Ada Lvelace and the physicist James Clerk Maxwell were bth accmplished pets. The pet Jhn Keats was a licensed surgen. Cmbining the tw practices fell ut f favr in the 1800s. But translating research int lyrics, haiku, and ther petic frms is resurging(再现)amng scientists as they lk fr alternative ways t inspire thers with their findings.
“Petry is a great tl fr questining the wrld,” says Sam Illingwrth, a pet and a gescientist wh wrks at the University f Western Australia. Thrugh wrkshps and a new science-petry jurnal, called Cnsilience, Illingwrth is helping scientists t translate their latest results int pems that can attract appreciatin frm thse utside f their immediate scientific field.
Stephany Mazn, a scientist frm the University f Helsinki in Finland, jined ne f Illingwrth’s wrkshps. In the wrkshp, she was gruped with ther scientists and tasked with writing a haiku, a 17-syllable-lng pem, which sptlighted water, a fluid that featured in all f the grup members’ research prjects. “It was a lt f fun, and surprisingly easy t write the pem,” Mazn says. She plans t cntinue writing. “We d a disservice(伤害)t urselves t think that scientists can’t be artistic and that art can’t be used t cmmunicate scientific ideas,” Mazn says.
That viewpint is eched by Illingwrth, wh thinks science cmmunicatin initiatives are t ften dminated by public lectures with their hands-ff PwerPint slides. “Actually, when science cmmunicatin invlves writing and sharing pems, it invites a tw-way dialgue between experts and nnexperts,” he says. Scientist-pet Manjula Silva, an educatr at Imperial Cllege Lndn, agrees. Petry prvides a way t translate cmplex scientific cncepts int a language that everyne can understand, Silva says.
Scientists and pets are bth trying t understand the wrld and cmmunicate that understanding with thers. The distinctin between scientists and pets is less than peple might think. We’re all just peple with hpefully really interesting things t say and t share.

B. Inspire utsiders t pursue their careers in science.
C. Encurage science cmmunicatin thrugh pems.
D. Get scientists t exchange ideas abut the latest research.
14. What des Illingwrth think f the dminant ways f science cmmunicatin?

15. Which f the fllwing is the best title fr the text?

D. Science Cmmunicatin: A Tw-way Dialgue

Distinguishing chance frm real differences. All srts f subtle things that yu either dn’t r cannt cntrl can affect the utcme f a test. Sme ckies in a batch might have wund up with a few less chclate chips than thers. The ven might have heated unevenly and burnt a few ckies. ___20___—but in small ways. S hw t avid this? Sample size is imprtant. The larger yur sample size, the mre likely it is clse t the fact.
