Different frests in the western United States have unique cmbinatins f trees and birds. One type has brad-leaved trees like ash and cttnwd, alng with kingbirds. Anher type has evergreen trees like pine and white spruce, alng with juncs. Eclgists in the early twentieth century nce claimed these eclgical cmmunities were precisely balanced systems, where every species had a specific rle t play in a cmplex machine. They believed that remving r adding any plant, bird, r insect, culd disrupt this balance and harm the habitat. One f these pineer eclgists was Frederick Clements, wh believed that in a specific climate area, eclgical cmmunities gradually mved tward the mst balanced and integrated grup f species in that regin.
Clements was challenged by anther pineer eclgist, Henry Gleasn, wh tk the ppsite view. Gleasn viewed the cmmunity as largely a grup f species with similar tlerances t the stresses given by climate and ther factrs typical f the regin. Gleasn thught chance played a big rle in where species lived. His cncept suggests that nature is nt highly integrated. Each species is respnding individually t its surrundings. Gleasn thught things culd change in different ways, depending upn lcal cnditins.
Wh was right? It nw appears that Gleasn was mre accurate than Clements. The eclgical cmmunity is mstly a randm cllectin f species with similar respnses t a particular climate. Ash trees are fund in assciatin with cttnwd trees because bth can survive well n fldplains and the cmpetitin between them is nt s strng that nly ne can survive.
This is nt t say that precise harmnies are nt present within cmmunities. Mst flwering plants rely n pllinatrs (传粉者). But if we see a precise balance f nature, it is largely a prduct f ur perceptin, due t the false belief that nature, especially a cmplex system like a frest, seems s unchanging frm ne day t the next.
28.Early 20th century eclgists cmmnly claimed that___________.
A.each species plays a specific rle in the cmmunity
B.new species need t be added as cmmunities develp
C.maintaining precise balance in cmmunity is challenging
D.it is imprtant t prtect cmmunities by remving certain species
29.Accrding t Gleasn, what influences where species live?
A.Hw individualistic the species is.B.Their ability t tlerate the stresses there.
C.The number f similar species present.D.Their ways t integrate with ther species.
30.Why des the authr mentin tw kinds f trees in paragraph 3?
A.T shw greater species variety in fldplains.
B.T prvide evidence t supprt Clements’ thery.
C.T give an example f species that prefer t live n fldplains.
D.T supprt the current view n hw eclgical cmmunities develp.
31.The underlined wrd “perceptin” in paragraph 4 is clsest in meaning t____________.

Army ants make a habit f killing rganisms, ften much larger than themselves, breaking them int pieces and dragging them back t their bases. They dn’t eat everything. Waste full with discarded bits f prey is a feature f army ant bases. But little is knwn abut which animals make use f army ant leavings.
As recunted in a paper in Eclgy &. Evlutin, Christph vn Beer en at the Technical University f Darmstadt and Daniel Krnauer at the Rckefeller University in New Yrk, went t the rainfrests f Csta Rica t find ut. They fund an entire ecsystem thriving amng the leftvers.
Mnitring tiny insects in a rainfrest is tricky. But the researchers hped mdern DNA analysis techniques might make the jb manageable. Wrking with a team f clleagues, they fllwed ant trails back t their bases, finding 34 sites in ttal.
The researchers used a handheld vacuum cleaner t suck up all the bugs at waste and brught the samples back t a field labratry. T keep the task manageable, the team cnfined themselves t examining nly the beetles they had cllected. They identified the beetles they culd and ran DNA analyses n thse they culd nt.
In ttal, they cllected 8, 364 adult beetles, 511 beetle larvae and 24 beetle eggs. Thse were spread acrss 91 species, several f which were entirely new t science. Aside frm that being far mre than anyne had expected, the presence f the larvae and eggs indicates that the leftvers are nt s much cnvenient restaurants as full-n hmes, where the beetles live ut their entire lives.
Precisely hw these species manage t avid being eaten themselves by their army-ant hsts remains t be determined. Dr. vn Beeren speculates that a hygiene instinct that keeps the ants frm eating material that has been taken t their waste is partially respnsible. And many species f beetles are able t prduce cmpunds that smell disgusting t ants. The chances are high that amng these insects are sme predatrs t, seeking t feed n unsuspecting scavengers (食腐动物) in turn.
    32.What d army ants d with rganisms?
    A.They cnsume sme f rganisms.
B.They drag rganisms t waste piles.
C.They kill rganisms and eat them all.
D.They break rganisms int discarded bits.
33.Hw did the researchers make the jb manageable?
A.By examining the beetles they had sucked up.
B.By classifying the insects int different varieties.
C.By using DNA analysis techniques n all beetles.
D.By running DNA analyses n the unknwn insects.
34.What did the researchers find after analysis?
A.The leftvers are like restaurants t the beetles.
B.The leftvers are just like hmes t the beetles.
C.The army ants kill sme f the larvae and eggs.
D.The larvae and eggs are eaten by the army ants.
35.What culd be the title f the passage?
A.In the Leavings the Insects Are the King
    B.One Insect’s Leavings Is Anther’s Meal
    C.Where There’re Leavings, There’re Insects
D.When the Ants Away, the Insects Will Play
