Is it OK t kill time? Machines used t find this questin difficult t answer. But a new study shws’ that artificial intelligence (AI) can be prgrammed t judge right frm wrng.
“We shw that machines can learn abut ur mral values,”says Dr. Patrick Schramwski, authr f this study, based at the Darmstadt University f Technlgy, Germany.
“There is general agreement that AI research is prgressing rapidly and that AI’s influence n sciety is likely t increase,” Schramwski reprts. “Frm self-driving cars t health care, AI systems deal with increasingly cmplex (复杂的) human tasks in increasingly autnmus ways. It is imprtant t carry ut research in this area s that we can trust the decisins they make.”
Schramwski’s AI system is named the Mral Chice Machine (MCM). He and his team trained it with sets f newspapers, articles, and ther texts that appeared between the years 1510 and 2009.
Once the scientists had trained the MCM it accepted the mral values f the given text. When asked whether ne may steal mney, harm animals r kill a living being, it will answer “N.” But if yu ask “Shuld I kill time?” it will tell yu it’s kay. Because it has understd that the behavir means n harm. Yu will generally get a reasnable answer frm the machine.
“The MCM did this nt by repeating the text it fund,” reprts Schramwski. “It culd tell the difference between cntextual infrmatin prvided in a questin.”
Furthermre, the study shws that the machine takes up mral values indicative f the time and kind f sciety the written surces cme frm, shwing the changing scial nrms (准则) ver ages.
Fr example, when they limited its training data t news articles frm 2008 t 2009, the AI system favred wrk and schl ver family life. But when it culd nly explre news frm the late eighties and nineties, it favred marriage and parenting.

Off the cast f nrtheastern Queensland, Australia, near Magnetic Island in Flrence Bay, the Great Barrier Reef crals (大堡礁珊瑚) are having a baby bm (激增).
“Every year there are mre anrd mre cral babies,” says Hillary Smith, an eclgist at ames Ck University in Australia.
That’s thanks t a simple but effective strategy fr cleaning the regin’s cral reefs: “seaweeding”. Like weeding (给……除杂草) a garden, seaweeding invlves pulling big handfuls f large algae (水藻) ff reefs and taking them away.
Experts say getting climate change under cntrl is key t keeping the wrld’s reefs healthy. But meanwhile, lcal effrts such as seaweeding can help crals grw and reduce the effects f climate change.
The health f cral reefs arund the wrld is dire: By 2050, 95 percent f the wrld’s cral culd experience heat stress, accrding t a 2020 reprt by the Glbal Cral Reef Mnitring Netwrk. Algae is a big prblem: Already, algae cver has increased n tw-thirds f reefs arund the wrld, and ne study published in 2021 shwed that half the wrld’s cral reefs have died since the 1950s. Remving seaweed frm reefs requires a great deal f wrk but is nt cmplex, making it a gd prject fr citizen scientists eager t help restre (恢复) reefs.
When the prject first began in 2018 Smith says researchers weren’t sure if remving seaweed wuld benefit the reef r if remval might have the ppsite effect in sme way. But nw, “It’s all lking really psitive fr the reef,” she says.
Vlunteers are ready and waiting t help near Twnsville and at ther affected Australian reefs, says the Earthwatch Institute’s Fina Wilsn.“We need lts f willing hands t remve seaweed. It takes weeks f time,”she says. “But bviusly recvery f the Great Barrier Reef is a passin fr many peple, s we draw vlunteers.”
32. What cntributed t the grwth f the Great Barrier Reef crals in Flrence Bay?
A. Lcal effrts t remve seaweed.B. Reduced effects f climate change.
C. Fewer human activities in the regin.D. The use f new restratin technlgies.
33 What des the underlined wrd “dire” in paragraph 5 mean?
A. Strange.B. Acceptable.C. Excellent.D. Terrible.
34. Hw did researchers feel abut the prject at first?
A. They were hpeful f it.B. They were excited abut it.
C. They were uncertain abut it.D. They were uninterested in it.
35. What des Wilsn say abut the recvery f the Great Barrier Reef?
A. It is still a lng way ff.B. It is less difficult than thught.
C. It will take hard wrk and skill.D. It attracts and needs vlunteers.
