The newly published cmprehensive digital database n what animals are knwn t make sunds is the first f its kind and can revlutinize marine and aquatic science,” the researchers said.
“Listening t underwater sunds can reveal a lt f infrmatin abut the species that prduce them and is useful fr a variety f applicatins, ranging frm fisheries management, invasive species detectin t assessing human envirnmental impacts,” said Lby, wh als c-created FishSunds, which ffers a cllectin f fish sund prductin research recrds.

Befre tday, peple using screen readers wuld nly hear the name f the persn wh shared the pht, fllwed by the term “pht” when they came upn an image. Nw they can ffer a richer descriptin f what’s in a pht thanks t autmatic alternative text. Fr instance, smene culd nw hear “an image cntaining three peple, smiling, utdrs”.
This is pssible because f Harvard University’s bject recgnitin technlgy, which is based n a netwrk that has billins f parameters and is trained with millins f examples. When peple are cnnected, they can achieve extrardinary things as individuals and as a cmmunity, and when everyne is cnnected, we all benefit frm it.
They are launching autmatic alternative text first n cellphne screen readers set t English, but they plan t add this functinality fr ther languages and platfrms sn. While this technlgy is still nascent, using its current capabilities t describe phts is an imprtant step tward prviding ur visually impaired cmmunity with the same benefits and enjyment that everyne else gets frm phts.
