Our ld, artificial Christmas tree was in rugh shape by the time we retired it. At least a decade had passed since my wife and I bught the tree, a medium-size fake tree with built-in lights, at a Target in Brklyn and carried it n the subway t ur tiny apartment. Our little tree lked run dwn, but it was the nly tree ur family ever knew. It stands prud and glwing in the backgrund f phts f me and my pregnant wife during ur last Christmas in Brklyn withut children. Our ldest was brn a mnth later during a January snwstrm. The tree shws up again in the next year’s phts, this time surrunded by hliday gifts fr a by abut t turn 1. One f the mst famus examples f this is the tragic case f Kitty Genvese wh was fatally stabbed （刺伤） in Kew Gardens, New Yrk, in 1964．Subsequent investigatins cncluded that several peple saw r heard what was happening, but did nthing t intervene. This has been termed the “bystander effect” —a well-knwn psychlgical phenmenn where individuals are less likely t ffer help t smene when ther peple are present. The mre peple there are, the less likely they are t help.
There are varius factrs cntributing t this effect—peple think that thers will get invlved r intervene. Afterwards peple ften say they did nt feel qualified r senir r imprtant enugh t be the ne t intervene. It is als partly dwn t “pluralistic （多元化的） ignrance” —since everyne is nt reacting t the emergency, they dn’t need t either; it’s nt serius because n ne else is ding anything. After a serius incident where peple have been affected by the bystander effect, they are ften hrrified that they didn’t d anything—they can’t believe they had nt realized it was mre serius r that they didn’t think t get invlved.
The imprtant thing t understand thugh is that ther studies have shwn that nce peple are aware f the bystander effect, they are less likely t be affected by it. Tm Redmnd, the principal f Chetham’s schl f music in Manchester, said nly three f its pupils practised the recrder, cmpared with 15 a decade ag. “Mre pupils were taking up the pian r ther instruments,” said Redmnd. “The nes that became really ppular are the nes students spend mre time playing alne. With the instruments being mre scially based, there has been a decline, just like the recrder. ”
Redmnd als said that this prblem extended “beynd the recrder itself” and was a mirrr f the future f music. “Like remving any plant r animal frm an ecsystem, remving the recrder has a huge chain effect beynd just the instrument. Our ld, artificial Christmas tree was in rugh shape by the time we retired it. At least a decade had passed since my wife and I bught the tree, a medium-size fake tree with built-in lights, at a Target in Brklyn and carried it n the subway t ur tiny apartment. Over the years, we dragged that tree frm apartment, jammed it nt a mving truck t Ls Angeles and later packed the weathered bx nt anther mving truck, this time t Chicag and ur current hme. By the end, layers f duct tape （强力胶布） held the bx tgether, the wear and tear f a decade f delivering hliday cheer.
Our little tree lked run dwn, but it was the nly tree ur family ever knew.
