It was early September, a seasn f less rain. I paid a visit t the Explradres Glacier in suthern Chile's Laguna San Rafael Natinal Park.
The glacier is an ice sheet that reached its biggest size abut 28,000 years ag. But like all glaciers, its grwth r decline relies n the amunt f snw it receives and the temperatures that either keep it frzen r speed up its disappearance.
"Glaciers are like nature's thermmeter(温度计)," said Jrge O'Kuinghttns Villena, the guardian f the glacier wh was accmpanying me. "When yu see them melt, yu knw that human lives nearby are at risk. "
O'Kuinghttns was referring t the fact that melting ice might result in glacial lake utburst flds, r GLOFs, that can des try nearby cmmunities. A striking case f this ccurred in 1977.
"Many peple were taken by surprise, because it was a sunny day withut rain," said O'Kuinghttns.
"Was the GLOF a nce-in-a-lifetime ccurrence?" I asked.
"N, it was an extreme event," he replied. "But it happens mre frequently here, with mre vilence recently."
Hiking arund the glacier was a unique experience. Owing t its remteness, there was n life, n mvement, n change f any srt in sight. Every 10 minutes r s, the deep silence gave way t a gunfire-like sund: the cracking f ice. Just as suddenly, silence returned.
"It is an everyday ccurrence. The glacier is dying," O'Kuinghttns said. "Take yur pht here, and then cme back in five years. Yu can see the difference. What really wrries me is the glacier’s slw but accelerated disappearance due t the rising temperatures."
Late in the evening, I fund myself lying in the cmfrt f my bed and listening t the unmistakable sunds fllwed by the quietness. The cycle kept me awake all night. I wndered when we wuld be punished fr ur wn activities.

The new text-t-vide generatr, Sra, isn't the first f its kind. Ggle, Meta and Runway ML are amng the ther cmpanies t have demnstrated similar technlgy. But industry analysts are deeply impressed by the quality and length f the vides shared s far. Fred Havemeyer, head f AI and sftware research at Macquarie, said that Sra's launch marks a big step frward fr bth Open AI and the future f text-t-vide generatin technlgy.
"Sra's vides nt nly run up t 60 secnds in length, but als lk s natural that it seems t actually respect physics and the real wrld," Havemeyer said. "The length and cnsistency f the vides represent new pprtunities fr creatives t generate vides frm ne r a few written cmmands."
Althugh Sra's abilities have amazed bservers since its launch, anxiety ver ptential prblems f AI-generated vide uses als remains.
"Having a ptentially magical way t generate vides that lk and sund realistic may present a number f issues fr the sciety," Havemeyer added. "It's a serius issue that every business and every persn needs t face."
Hwever, tech cmpanies are still calling the shts when it cmes t cntrlling AI and its risks as gvernments arund the wrld are still struggling t catch up. Last year, the Eurpean Unin reached a deal n the wrld's first cmprehensive AI rules, but the act wn't take effect until tw years after final apprval.
Open AI prmised t take imprtant safety steps befre making Sra widely available. "We are wrking with experts in areas like misinfrmatin, hateful cntent, and bias," Open AI's Vice President f Glbal Affairs Anna Makanju said at a cnference. "We're als building tls t help detect misleading cntent such as a detectin classifier that can tell when a vide was generated by Sra."
While Sra can create cmplex, incredibly detailed scenes, Open AI admits that there are still sme weaknesses. Fr example, a persn might take a bite ut f a ckie, but afterward, the ckie may nt have a bite mark.

31. What des the authr mst prbably want t tell us in the last paragraph?
A. The task itself is t difficult.
B. It is unnecessary t fcus n details.

Abut a decade ag, I attended a dinner in Guangzhu. The bird's nest sup was gentle and delicius, the fish fresh and perfectly steamed. The mst memrable dish, hwever, was the plain sup served at the end. Made frm chicken, prbably with ham as well, it was simple but perfect.
Ending a banquet with sup may seem dd t Westerners, accustmed as they are t sweets at a meal's clse. But, as Fuchsia Dunlp, an English fd writer, explains in her new bk, Invitatin t a Banquet, "The transparent sup is an ideal cnclusin t a meal."
Invitatin t a Banquet is Ms Dunlp's seventh bk. Unlike thse fr which she is best knwn, including The Fd f Sichuan, Shark’s Fin and Sichuan Pepper, and Revlutinary Chinese Ckbk(abut Hunanese cuisine), this is nt a ckbk. Instead, she has chsen 30 dishes and used each t illustrate different aspects f Chinese cuisine—and, in turn, Chinese life and histry.
"Westerners have traditinally assumed that the Chinese eat animal parts because they are pr, when in fact turning up ne's nse at pigs' heads and legs shuts the dr n a wide range f fds that are really wnderful," Ms Dunlp argues in the bk.
In shrt, Ms Dunlp has made a cnvincing case fr the superirity f Chinese cuisine, but in a delighted and expansive rather than chauvinistic(沙文主义的) way. She shws hw it has absrbed freign influences(as ther cuisines have, t), hw it has changed with China's increasing wealth and hw central it is t the cuntry's intellectual and cultural histry.
She makes an equally gd case in this bk that the Chinese fd mst Westerners can find at their lcal takeaway is neither inauthentic nr wrng. Instead, it reflects lcal tastes which are as representative f the cuisine's diversity as a frzen pizza is f Italy's adventurusness. The lcal takeaway has made the real thing mre accessible than ever utside China.
32. Which wrd best describes the authr's impressin f the dinner in Guangzhu?
A. Favrable. B. Cnservative. C. Negative. D. Unclear.
33. Which bk shuld readers select if they are interested in Chinese histry?
A. Shark’s Fin and Sichuan Pepper. B. The Fd f Sichuan.
C. Revlutinary Chinese Ckbk. D. Invitatin t a Banquet.
34. What des Ms Dunlp suggest Westerners d cncerning Chinese cuisine?
A. Avid eating pigs' heads and legs. B. G t the mst expensive restaurants.
C. Be pen-minded abut any Chinese fd. D. Dn't try the lcal takeaway utside China.
35. Where is this text mst likely frm?
A. A ckbk. B. A bk review. C. A bigraphy. D. A travel jurnal.
