Marilla saw Matthew in the frnt yard① and immediately rushed t② the dr.But when her eyes fell n the dd little figure③ in the stiff,ugly dress④,with the lng red hair and the eager,bright eyes⑤,she frze in amazement⑥.
“Matthew Cuthbert,wh's that?” she asked.“Where is the by?”
“There wasn't any by,” said Matthew.“There was nly her.”

“N by!But there must have been a by,” insisted Marilla.“We sent wrd t Mrs Spencer t bring a by.”

During this dialgue the child had remained silent⑨.Suddenly she seemed t grasp the full meaning⑩ f what had been said.She sprang frward⑪ a step and clasped her hands⑫.

“Anne,” said the child sadly.

They all sat dwn fr dinner but Anne culd nt eat.She tried t enjy the bread and butter and the apple jam ut f the little glass dish by her plate but she had n appetite㉔.
“Yu're nt eating anything,” said Marilla sharply,eying her as if it were a serius prblem[1].Anne sighed.
