In La Paz, there was anther cruising bat with a 13-year-ld by abard. Tw weeks later, Glen and I culd be seen endlessly bgie barding (趴板冲浪) the crashing waves t the beach. After meeting Glen, cruising fr me began t get better and better. At sme pint during these mnths, I decided t give this cruising idea a chance.
One year later we cntinued turing thrugh the Suth Pacific. I was learning new skills and learning hw t wrk independently. I ften tk a five-hur watch during the dark hurs f lng passages. This was quite a bit f respnsibility t hand ver t a 13-year-ld, especially cnsidering I was in charge f adjusting sails as the cnditins changed, and keeping an eye and ear ut fr any prblems. Almst everybdy in the cruising cmmunity treated me as an adult while still understanding I was a child, thereby giving me the flexibility t make childish mistakes.
As f this writing, my family has nw been abard fr three years. We have plans t return t Canada in 12 mnths and, similar t hw I ppsed mving nt the bat, I am nw cmpletely ppsed t mving ff it. The bys were left in the dark abut the experiment.
In the 1954 study, bys wh were apprximately 11~12 years ld thught that they were participating in a typical summer camp, which tk place at Rbbers Cave State Park. Hwever, the campers’ parents knew that their children were actually participating in a research study.
The bys arrived at the camp in tw separate grups: fr the first part f the study, they spent time with members f their wn grup, withut knwing that the ther grup existed. The grups chse names, the Eagles and the Rattlers.
After a shrt perid f time, the bys became aware f the existence f the ther grup and began t speak negatively abut the ther grup. Then the researchers arranged a cmpetitive turnament between the grups, cnsisting f games such as baseball and tug-f-war and the relatinship between the tw grups quickly became tense. The campers rated their wn grup mre psitively than the rival (对立) grup.
T determine the factrs that culd reduce grup cnflict, the researchers first brught the campers tgether fr fun activities such as having a meal r watching a mvie tgether. Hwever, this didn’t wrk t reduce cnflict.
Next, Sherif and his wrkmates tried having the tw grups wrk n cmmn gals. Fr example, the camp’s water supply was cut ff purpsely by the researchers, and the Eagles and the Rattlers wrked tgether t fix the prblem. Wrking n shared gals eventually reduced cnflict and friendships began t frm with members f the ther grup. Tw pwerful NASA telescpes have detected the ldest and mst distant black hle ever fund. Data cllected via energetic X-rays by the Chandra X-ray Observatry and James Webb Space Telescpe has helped astrnmers spt the signature f a grwing black hle within the early universe just 470 millin years after the big bang, which ccurred 13.8 billin years ag. The discvery, described in a study published in Nature Astrnmy, may help astrnmers figure ut hw sme f the first supermassive black hles frmed in the universe.
“We needed Webb t find this remarkably distant galaxy (星系) and Chandra t find its supermassive black hle, “ said lead study authr Aks Bgdan, in a statement. ”We als tk advantage f a csmic magnifying glass (宇宙放大镜) that bsted the amunt f light we detected. “ He was referring t an effect called gravitatinal lensing (引力透镜效应), which ccurs when clser bjects act like a magnifying glass fr distant bjects. Gravity essentially twists and strengthens the light f distant galaxies in the backgrund f whatever is ding the magnifying, enabling bservatins f therwise invisible features.
Astrnmers detected the black hle in a galaxy called UHZ1. At first glance, the galaxy appeared in the same directin as a cluster f galaxies knwn as Abell 2744, which is lcated abut 3. 5 billin light-years frm Earth. But data cllected by the Webb telescpe shwed that UHZl is actually much farther away and lcated beynd the cluster at 13. 2 billin light-years frm Earth.
The team used the Chandra Observatry t detect superheated gas releasing X-rays within UHZ1, the bvius sign f a supermassive black hle grwing in size. The detectin was made pssible by the Abell cluster f galaxies, which intensified the light f the UHZ1 galaxy and the X-rays released by the black hle by a factr f fur.
Astrnmers think the discvery will help them better understand hw supermassive black hles appeared and reached their huge masses s sn after the beginning f the universe.
    12. What’s the pssible age f the newly-fund black hle?
    A. 470 millin years.B. 13.33 billin years.
    C. 13. 8 billin years.D. 14. 27 billin years.
    13. What is Paragraph 2 mainly abut?
    A. The prcess f the research.
    B. The significance f the discvery.
    C. The cntributrs t the discvery.
    D. The backgrund f the research.
    14. Which best shws the psitin f Abell 2744, Earth and UHZ1?
    A. B.
    C. D.
    15. Which can be a suitable title fr the text?
    A. The Oldest and Mst Distant Black Hle Sptted.
    B. Tw Pwerful NASA Telescpes Cming int Service.
    C. New Supprting Evidence f the Big Bang Thery Detected.
    D. Astrnmers Figuring Out Hw the First Black Hles Frmed.
