Every year n 2 February, Punxsutawney Phil, the grundhg (土拨鼠), cmes ut f his hle in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. If the sun is shining and he sees his shadw befre ging back int his hle, it means winter will last six mre weeks. But if the day is cludy, spring will cme early. Curiusly, Phil is nt alne. In the regin arund Milan, traditin has it that if the bear cmes ut f his hle n a sunny day, he will be able t make himself a nice dry bed and then he’ll want t keep n sleeping. This will shw that the winter will cntinue. But if it’s a rainy day, the bear will have t stay ut—and spring will cme sn.
“These traditins can be traced back t Ind-Eurpean civilisatins 3,000-5,000 years ag,” says Venetian histrian Elena Righett. “That’s why they are spread all ver Eurpe,” she explains. The deepest meaning f the traditin, accrding t Righett, is in its seemingly cntradictry (矛盾的) nature. It might seem illgical (不合逻辑的) that cld days indicate the cming f spring, r that grundhgs and bears wuld decide t stay ut just when the weather is bad.
“The idea is that the darkest mment, when everything seems t g wrng, is when we experience a rebirth, a new life,” explains Righett. There is a thught that life cmes frm darkness, just as plants start t grw frm the seeds left undergrund during winter. This thught is s pwerful that it crssed cuntries and survived centuries.
Traditins dn’t prtect peple frm bad weather, death, r illness, but they prtect them emtinally frm sme f the anxiety related t thse cming realities. They dn’t slve the real prblem, but they slve the mental prblem—they help yu live thrugh the hard times f life. In a way, if we can believe in the magical pwers f grundhgs and bears, we might find even an extended (延长的) winter a bit warmer and friendlier.
    28. What can we learn frm the first paragraph?
    A. Animals are cleverer than humans.B. The grundhg dislikes his shadw.
    C. The bear prefers t sleep in the dry bed.D. Nice weather indicates an extended winter.
    29. What des the secnd paragraph talk abut?

    C The laws f the nature.D. Ind-Eurpean civilisatins.
    30. What can we learn abut these traditins frm the last paragraph?
    A. They can prevent bad weather.B. They can prvide emtinal supprt.
    C. They can slve the real prblem.D. They can exercise magical pwers.
    31. What is the authr’s attitude twards the idea behind the traditins?
    A. Critical.B. Puzzled.C. Respectful.D. Uncertain.
