Feel dwn? Hug a tree! Recently, many Chinese yung peple have turned t trees t help with their stress. Hugging a tree may be easier fr sme peple wh d nt enjy the experience f hugging ther peple, r being hugged by them. Althugh it sunds strange, there’s a science behind the act f tree-hugging. Trees help us feel gd because they remind us f ur place in nature.
It can be explained by the “Biphilia Hypthesis”. Just being utside in nature has been shwn t be gd fr yur mental health. It was pinted ut by US scientist Edward Wilsn in 1984. He said that humans are brn t lve being arund ther living things. Humans’ lve fr nature is “in ur DNA”. This idea helps t explain why peple prefer natural, green views t city views. It’s als ne f the reasns why peple lve cute pets.
Sme studies have lked int why tree-hugging can help with ur health. After peple hug trees, they reprt feeling calmer and mre relaxed than thse wh d nt. A study in 2021 reprted that activity can increase hrmne xytcin ( 催产激素 ). It’s respnsible fr feelings. The higher the xytcin is, the calmer and happier yu may be. Hugging trees fr nly 21 secnds can lead t an increase in xytcin.
Anther factr called crtisl (皮质醇) is a sign f stress. The brain prduces mre crtisl when the persn is wrried, angry, r very sad. Research shws that hugging trees helps cut crtisl prductin, reduces bld pressure and lwers the chances f having heart attack, which makes us feel better.
Althugh hugging trees is helpful t us, it’s imprtant t keep in mind that we shuldn’t hurt nature while ding it. Many small creatures live n the tree—and they are t small t be seen. Yu’d better be gentle when hugging trees—just like hw yu hug a friend. Or yu can chse anther way t reduce yur stress, such as exercise, deep breathing, and talking t thers.
    27. Which can be explained by the “Biphilia Hypthesis”?

Willpwer helps us t keep studying and wrking hard. It allws us t say n t the extra sweet after a meal. We may nt achieve ur gals if we fail t cntrl urselves s scientists have been studying willpwer fr many years.
One f the main theries (理论) f willpwer is the energy mdel f self-cntrl. Accrding t it, the brain can prvide limited pwer, which can be used up. Nbdy is disciplined all the time. When an act f self-cntrl weakens ur will, we’ll feel tired because f the decrease f bld sugar as we face anther challenge.
This mdel has great influence, but Nrthwestern University’s Daniel Mlden desn’t agree with it. His team has been using a new experiment t test the rle f carbhydrate metablism (碳水化合物代谢) in self-cntrl.
Daniel’s team questined the finding that self-cntrl lwers bld sugar levels. Vlunteers ate nthing and had their baseline bld sugar level tested. Sme cmpleted high self-cntrl tasks, while thers did lw disciplined tasks. Later, all vlunteers had bld sugar tests and did anther self-cntrl challenge.
The results were interesting. Vlunteers wh cmpleted the challenging task shwed less willpwer in the fllwing task. This agrees with the energy mdel. Hwever, their bld sugar did nt fall. It shwed that willpwer didn’t increase carbhydrate metablism.
The energy mdel suggests that using up sugar can bring back self-cntrl. Daniel’s team tested this idea by having vlunteers rinse (清洗) their muths with water mixed with sugar, spitting (吐出) it ut like muthwash. Others rinsed with the artificial sweetened water that was similar t a sugary drink but prvided n energy. Later, all vlunteers participated in a secnd task requiring self-cntrl.
The results disagreed with the energy mdel nce again. Thse wh rinsed with the artificial sweetened water shwed lwer willpwer. Hwever, rinsing with the sugary water seemed t bring back vlunteers’ lst willpwer, mre than the artificially sweetened water. This study shwed that nly the sugary rinse culd bring back self-cntrl.
Scientists believe that inspiratin is the reasn why self-cntrl is back. They believe the muth “senses” the carbhydrates in the muthwash, which may tell that a reward (奖励) is cming. Sensing that an energy increase is cming, the brain is active t put in extra effrt. In shrt, the sugar inspires—rather than ffers energy fr—willpwer.
If inspiratin can be refilled with smething as simple as a muthwash, this pens different pssibilities fr new researches in the future.
    30. What des the wrd “disciplined” in Paragraph 2 prbably mean?
    A. Relaxed.B. Surprised.C. Self-cntrlled.D. Self-satisfied.
    31. Daniel’s team’s experiments shw that ________.
    A. carbhydrates inspire willpwerB. challenging tasks increase willpwer
    C. muthwash gives inspiratin t brainD. self-cntrl lwers bld sugar levels
    32. What is Paragraph 6 mainly abut?
A The ways t test the rle f sugar.B. The influences f the sugary drink.
    C. The intrductin f the energy mdel.D. The rle f carbhydrate metablism.
33 Yu will mst prbably shw mre willpwer when yu ________.
    A. cmplete challenging tasksB. have sme sweetened fd
    C. reward thers with giftsD. keep balanced bld sugar level
