They are s small that yu need a micrscpe t see them, but s pwerful that experts predict they culd kill ten millin peple per year wrldwide by the year 2050.They are superbugs—drug-resistant bacteria that have emerged since antibitics(抗生素)revlutinized medicine. Indeed, the rise f these superbugs and the use f antibitics are clsely cnnected.
All rganisms change ver time. Smaller rganisms, such as bacteria, are able t evlve mre quickly, adapting as circumstances require. Facing antibitics, bacteria have adapted with deadly efficiency. When a patient takes antibitics t fight ff a bacterial infectin, the gal is t kill the bacteria causing the infectin. Hwever, althugh mst f the bacteria are killed, a few f the strngest bacteria survive. Thus, nly these drug-resistant bacteria are able t reprduce. This sets up a cycle and eventually results in the develpment f superbugs—bacteria able t resist even the mst pwerful drugs.
Scientists believe that a large part f this cycle is preventable. One recent study suggested that almst50% f all antibitic use is inapprpriate r unnecessary. Sme patients are prescribed(开处方)antibitics fr illness that wuld eventually clear up n their wn. Unfrtunately, such use is prblematic because it kills ff the beneficial bacteria, leaving drug-resistant strains f bacteria t thrive.
What can be dne t preserve antibitics fr future generatins? Scientists maintain that as individuals, we can make a difference with simple steps, such as regular hand washing. It is als imprtant that patients understand that antibitics aren’t always the right curse f treatment. Finally, it is crucial t take antibitics ut f the fd chain.
