If yu wanted t make a Disney-style animatin f, say, Reggie, a spirited rabbit, planning t save his frest, yu'd have a lead animatr draw the extremes f the actin: Reggie lking intensely fcused, and then prudly annuncing, "There's a new her in the frest! "Then yu'd bring in an in-betweener - that is, the animatr wh draws all the cmprehensive frames that bridge the majr actins.

His first big assignment was t in-between the wagging f a dg's tail. Disney animatin was famus fr its silky elegance, wing in n small part t the skill f its in-betweeners, and, thanks t Mattinsn, the tail practically glided frm side t side.
Mattinsn had wanted t be an animatr ever since his mther had taken him t see" Pincchi" at a theatre when he was six. In a bld mve, Mattinsn shwed up at the Disney Studis gate with his prtfli (作品) as sn as he finished high schl. The magical part f this stry is that, instead f shing him away, the security guard liked his drawings and called the head f persnnel t take a lk.
Thus, Mattinsn became a messenger at Disney, beginning a career that wuld eventually make him the emplyee with the lngest service at the cmpany. He had jined the cmpany at a glden mment. Listing the films that he wrked n is a little like listing the entire utput f the Walt Disney Cmpany ver the past six decades: Sleeping Beauty, "The Lin King," and n and n.
Mattinsn was, perhaps, ne f the last f an almst extinct gentype - the happy cmpany man, the lifer. He never had an emplyer besides Disney. When asked what Mattinsn enjyed ding utside f his life at Disney, his sn said, "He just lved his wrk."
    24. What rle d in-betweeners play in animatin prductin? A . Design the stryline. B . Draw the backgrund. C . Invent extreme actins. D . Generate smth mtin.
    25. Which f the fllwing can best describe Mattinsn's path t Disney? A . Uncnventinal. B . Typical. C . Illegal. D . Accidental.
    26. What makes Mattinsn exceptinal in Disney's histry? A . His lifelng dedicatin t Disney. B . His detailed wrk as an in-betweener. C . His passin fr animatin beynd wrk. D . His pineering rle in Disney animatin.
    27. What is the best title f the passage? A . A lifer in the Disney. B . In-betweeners' rle in animatin. C . A bld mve t Disney. D . A glrius career.

In June a massive "heat dme" baked the famusly temperate Pacific Nrthwest, subjecting parts f Washingtn State, Oregn and western Canada t extreme temperatures. It is virtually impssible that heat waves like this wuld have ccurred withut climate change. Scientists estimate it was a ne-in-1, 000-year event. "And that's an ‘at least,'" says Kristie. L. Ebi. "It culd be mre rare than that. "If warming reaches tw degrees Cabve preindustrial levels — the threshld that mst natinal gvernments have agreed t try t avid in hpes f reducing climate change impacts, "that event culd ccur every five t 10 years," Ebi says. But at a certain pint, that fails t wrk, causing lss f cnsciusness. Peple can eventually acclimatize t sme level f heat. If yu live in a ht climate r wrk in ht cnditins fr a perid f weeks r mnths, yur bdy becmes mre efficient at sweating and cling itself dwn. This prcess takes time, hwever.

"Even a lt f ur climate mdels that prject ut hw frequent extreme heat will be in the future wuldn't have necessarily predicted this level f heat fr that part f the cuntry," Kristina Dahl says. The idea that we can have it all and d it all is nt new. This myth has been spread fr s lng, I believe virtually everyne alive tday is infected with it. It is sld in advertising. It is included in university applicatins that require dzens f extracurricular activities.
What is new is hw especially damaging this myth is tday, in a time when chice and expectatins have increased expnentially. It results in stressed peple trying t stuff mre activities int their already ver-scheduled lives.
The wrd pririty came int the English language in the 1400s. It was singular. It meant the very first r prir thing. It stayed singular fr the next five hundred years. Only in the 1900s did we pluralize the term and start talking abut pririties. Illgically, we reasned that by changing the wrd we culd bend reality. Smehw we wuld nw be able t have multiple "first" things. Peple rutinely try t d just that. This gave the impressin f many things being the pririty but actually meant nthing was.
When we dn't purpsefully and deliberately chse where t fcus ur energies and time, ther peple will chse fr us, and befre lng we'll have lst sight f everything that is meaningful and imprtant.
Once an Australian nurse named Brnnie Ware, wh cared fr peple in the last twelve weeks f their lives, recrded their mst ften discussed regrets. But first, the bad news. Peple initially judge each ther based purely n physical appearance. With just a glimpse f a face, peple make snap judgments abut each ther's likeability, trustwrthiness and cnfidence. Hw shuld we deal with this? 37 Peple perceive a smiling face as mre trustwrthy, warmer and sciable. It sunds like cmmn sense, desn't it? Smile and thers will smile with yu.
What ther tricks might we have? 38 Cnsequently, three things we can d t signal that we are nt a threat: raise ur eyebrws quickly, tilt (仰起) ur heads slightly, and nce again, t smile.
S we've lked at bdy language, but f curse what yu say is hugely imprtant t, unless yu want t just stand there grinning flishly. The glden rule f friendship is if yu make peple feel gd abut themselves, they're ging t like yu. In ther wrds, yu shuld nt talk abut yurself and all yur wnderful achievements. 39
Finally, finding cmmn grund is gd t frm a cnnectin. Charming peple are particularly skilled at seeking ut shared interests r experiences t bnd with thers. Simple things like asking where smene's frm really can pen up a discussin and allw yu t find areas in cmmn. And if all else fails, yu can fall back n that mst British f tpics: the weather. 40
