The turn f the year is the time fr reviewing ne’s life, and fr making sme reslutins abut what t cncentrate n in the cming year; and fr many years I have taken advantage f the hliday t review my wn ambitin.
One thing I decide n this year is t give up writing the Grumpy (暴躁的) Old Bkman clumn in this magazine. It’s nt that I’ve lst interest in the bk wrld. But Lenard Wlf, husband f American writer Virginia Wlf (1882—1941), used t say a man shuld change his career every seven years. Thugh I wuld say that changing yur whle career frequently is ging a bit far, I d find that it serves as a great refresher if yu can ccasinally try a new jb within the same line f business.
It is ver 15 years since ur editr wrte t me and asked if I wuld be interested in writing a regular piece abut what was, even then, a rapidly changing publishing scene. He apprached me because since 2004 I had been writing a regular blg called Grumpy Old Bkman.
As my mnthly survey f develpments in bth traditinal and digital publishing cntinued, in this magazine, I began t realize that writers in this century, f bth fictin and nn-fictin, are living in smething clse t a paradise (天堂). Once, yu struggled fr years t find a publisher—r an agent if yu wanted ne—but nw yu can publish yur wn stuff, either digitally r in paperback, withut it csting yu a penny piece.
After abut five years f prducing such clumns, it ccurred t me that, rather than let these essays fade away n the seas f time, it might be valuable t publish my thughts and cmments in bk frm t ptential readers. Hence, in 2014, I published the first 69 GOB clumns in paperback frmat, using Amazn’s Create Space facilities. Title: Writers Rejice! A mnthly diary f the dawn f the digital age, which was my first trial. And nw I sincerely wish a new 2024.
4. Why des the authr want t give up writing the clumn?
A. He is fed up with the career linked t bks.
B. He is very keen n trying smething new.
C. He fllws Lenard Wlf’s suggestin.

Pick up any packaged prcessed fd, and there’s a decent chance that ne f its listed ingredients will be “natural flavur”. The ingredient sunds gd, particularly in cntrast t “artificial flavurs” since there is a cmmn belief that ingredients frm nature are necessarily safer than smething artificially made. But it’s nt true. Then what exactly des the natural flavur mean? It refers t extracts (提取物) gt frm natural surces like plants, meat r seafd. When cnsumers see the “natural flavur” n a label, they are unlikely t assume that smene is squeezing the juice frm ranges int their bttles. They knw even thugh natural flavur must cme frm natural surces, it needn’t all cme frm the plant r meat. Fr example, range flavurs might cntain nt nly range extracts, but als extracts frm bark and grass.
S if flavurs like range are needed, why nt just use ranges? The answer cmes dwn t “availability, cst, and sustainability”, accrding t flavur chemist Gary Reineccius f the University f Minnesta. “If yu’re ging t use all yur grapes n grape sda,” Reineccius says, “yu dn’t have any grapes fr wine making; the prducts are ging t be exrbitant; besides, what d yu d with the by-prducts yu create after yu’ve squeezed all the juice ut f the grapes?”
Actually, while chemists make natural flavurs by extracting chemicals frm natural ingredients, artificial flavurs are made by creating the same chemicals artificially. The reasn why cmpanies bther t use natural flavurs rather than artificial flavurs is simple: marketing. “Many f these prducts have health titles,” says Platkin, prfessr frm Hunter Cllege. “Cnsumers may be talked t believe prducts with natural flavurs are healthier, thugh they are nutritinally n different frm thse with artificial flavurs. Natural flavurs may invlve mre frest clear-cutting and carbn emissins frm transprt than flavurs created in the lab.”
Platkin suggests getting mre transparent (易懂的) labeling n packaging that describes exactly what the natural r artificial flavurs are, s cnsumers are-nt misled int buying ne prduct ver anther because f “natural flavurs”. Reineccius als ffers simple guidance: “Dn’t buy anything because it says ‘natural flavurs’. Buy it because yu like it.”
8. Which is misunderstanding abut the “natural flavur” juice accrding t Paragraph 1?
A. It cmes frm 100% riginal fruit.
B. It is nthing but advertising tricks.
C. It certainly cntains extracts made in the lab.
D. It is abslutely safer than juice with artificial flavurs.
9. What des the underlined wrd “exrbitant” in Paragraph 2 prbably mean?
A. Ppular.B. Expensive.C. Favrable.D. Innvative.
10. Why d cmpanies use natural flavurs in the prducts?
A. T cut the csts.B. T prmte the sales.
C. T advcate a healthy diet.D. T avid fd safety issues.
11. What can we cnclude frm the text?
A. Gary and Platkin hld ppsite perspectives.
B. Natural flavurs are mre envirnmentally friendly.
C. Custmers are misled fr ignring labels n packaging.
D. Natural and artificial flavurs are mre alike than yu think.
D
Imagine being able t use energy frm the sun all the time, even when it’s night. That’s the idea that scientists at Caltech(Califrnia Institute f Technlgy)are explring. They’re wrking n cllecting sunlight in space and sending its energy t Earth.
Caltech’s scientists have created a special tl fr this prject. They call it MAPLE. MAPLE and tw ther devices are part f a prject that was sent int space in January, 2023. MAPLE’s jb is t test the idea f sending energy wirelessly frm space t Earth. We’re used t using wires t mve electrical energy frm ne place t anther. But sending energy withut wires is a lt trickier.
The methd used by Caltech’s scientists depends n the way waves act when they meet. Imagine tw waves cming tgether as they travel in the same directin. If the tps f the waves line up, they cmbine t make a bigger wave. But if the tp f ne wave lines up with the lw pint f the ther, the waves cancel each ther ut. The Caltech team has fund a way t cntrl the timing f lts f micrwaves s that they can cmbine their pwer, and fcus the energy in ne directin. It’s a little like using a magnifying(放大的)glass t fcus sunlight int a small, ht pint f light.
T prve that the system culd wrk, MAPLE sent energy t tw devices just 30 centimeters away in space. This energy was then turned int electricity, which made tw small lights light up. Next, MAPLE sent energy all the way dwn t a lab at Caltech. The scientists were able t detect the energy, prving that it’s pssible t send slar energy t Earth frm space.
Dr. Hajimiri, ne f the prject’s leaders, thinks that ne day, the system culd be extremely useful, bringing energy t places that need it, all ver the wrld. He believes that in the future, we’ll be able t send energy t remte regins and areas destryed by war r natural disaster.
12. What is the challenge in Caltech’s prject with MAPLE?
A. Slar energy detectin.
B. Wireless energy delivery.
C. Sending devices int space.
D. Using wires t mve electricity.
13. Hw des the Caltech team cncentrate slar pwer?
A. By changing the way micrwaves act.
B. By magnifying waves cming tgether.
C. By cntrlling the timing f micrwaves.
D. By lining up the waves in ppsite directins.
14 What ptential benefit culd the system bring in the future accrding t Dr. Hajimiri?
A. Warning peple f natural disasters.
B. Turning slar energy int electricity.
C. Prviding a slutin t energy shrtages.
D. Sending energy t regins in urgent need.
15. What can be a suitable title fr the text?
A. The Use f Slar Energy in Space Explratin
B. The Challenges f Generating Energy Withut Wires
C. The Develpment f a New Tl fr Cllecting Electricity
D The Pssibility f Sending Energy Wirelessly frm Space t Earth
