S, Rebellón and Schmidt hired vlunteer teachers via scial media, and using a thusand dllars frm their savings, set up a temprary schl at the Tijuana brder. Classes were held in tw large tents.
In five years, that pilt prgram has grwn int the nn-prfit Yes We Can Wrld Fundatin, which perates three classrms in transfrmed schl buses and tw schls in Tijuana, plus anther in Ciudad Juarez, a Mexican city directly acrss the brder frm El Pas, Texas.

Eurpe draws unnecessarily t much n the earth’s fd resurces, which is why researchers are calling fr plitical actins t reduce fd lss and waste n the cntinent.
Accrding t researchers, “fd lss” ccurs frm the primary agricultural sectr t the fd prcessing industry and the whlesale sectr, while frm the retail (零售) sectr twards the service industry and husehlds, we refer t it as “fd waste”.
“Halving Eurpe’s fd lss and waste culd largely help slve the challenges f fd shrtages in the wrld,” says Marianne Thmsn, research leader and prfessr f sustainable fd systems at UCPH. The researchers’ calculatins shw halving fd lss and waste in Eurpe equals saving 8% f the greenhuse gas, alng with a saving f abut 12% f agricultural areas. In additin, there is a saving f 7% f water cnsumptin, and 14% f energy in the fd prductin fr the citizens f Eurpe.
The calculatins apply a cnsumptin-based apprach. This includes the greenhuse gas frm lcally prduced and imprted fd in Eurpean cuntries, while leaving ut fds prduced inside but exprted t ther cuntries.
This is why cuntries shuld take actins t reduce fd lss and waste at all stages f the fd supply chain. Marianne Thmsn intrduces mnitring and reprting f fd lss and waste by all actrs alng the fd supply chain as an imprtant actin.
Such an actin, cmbined with ther types f similar actins, may be a strng encuragement fr cmpanies and the rest f sciety t put in time and mney fr new technlgy and cmbined effrts t prevent fd lss and waste alng the fd supply chain. Prducing cmpanies can cperate n upcycling (升级改造) prducts. The service industry can apply upcycled materials prduced frm fd nt needed in the whlesale sectr, and at the same time encurage cstumers t take smaller prtins by reducing the plate size.
“Cutting fd lss and waste by 50% in Eurpe requires plitical actins, and als the actins need t adapt t natinal circumstances and specific reginal and lcal challenges,” says Marianne Thmsn.
8. What is the researchers’ ultimate aim?
A. T decrease fd lss and waste.
B. T criticize Eurpe fr verusing fd.
C. T lk fr new prducts fr Eurpeans.
D. T aruse peple’s awareness f fd shrtage.
9. What is presented in paragraph 3?
A. Pssible causes.B. Slving strategies.

A. It requires prducing less fd fr citizens f Eurpe.
B. It gives n cnsideratin t the fd prduced ut f Eurpe.
C. It needs jint effrts f everyne alng the fd supply chain.
D. It csts t much time and mney f fd prducing cmpanies.
11. What can we learn frm the passage?
A. Fd lss and waste appear at every stage f the supply chain.
B. Smaller sizes f plates lead t peple’s eating mre than they need.
C. Plitical actins t reduce fd lss and waste meet with n difficulty.
D. Cutting fd lss and waste in Eurpe by 50% means saving 14% agricultural lands.
D
The psychlgical term, valence weighting bias, describes peple’s tendency t adapt in new circumstances by drawing mre strngly frm either their psitive r negative attitudes, r rather, whether negative r psitive internal “signals” carry the mst weight in guiding peple’s final behavir.
Studies led by Russell Fazi and Javier Granads frm Ohi State University fund links between a negative-leaning attitude and prcrastinatin (拖延) and that it’s pssible t shift the weighting bias and reverse the tendency t delay a task.
In the study, 147 cllege students participated in a prgram allwing them t accumulate curse credits fr engaging in a research. Thse wh thught it was an awful thing t d prcrastinated starting. The study als explred whether students’ measures f self-cntrl influenced task-related behavirs: Hw students characterized their level f mtivatin abut the research prgram, and if that affected whether students gt an early start. Results shwed the cmbinatin f negative weighting bias and self-reprted lw mtivatin fr self-cntrl was linked t students putting ff research prgram participatin by getting started later in the semester.
Then the students in the prgram wh were self-reprted prcrastinatrs and wh scred high fr negative weighting bias were asked t jin in anther study. Researchers then inspired ne grup in a way that led participants t weigh psitive and negative signals in a mre balanced way. This shift caused the students t accumulate credit hurs mre quickly than the grup whse negative weighting bias and lw self-cntrl reliably predicted their delay. “If smebdy is mre mtivated and able t think mre abut it, that might bring ther cnsideratins that weaken the influence f the valence weighting bias,” researchers said.
Negative weighting bias can have a psitive effect n behavir, thugh. These researchers have als fund evidence that a negative weighting bias may help peple be mre realistic when they’re asking themselves, “Have I studied enugh fr this test?” “It’s better t be mre bjectively balanced than t be at either extreme,” Fazi said. “But the situatin where a particular valence weighting bias is likely t be prblematic is ging t vary.”
12. What can we knw abut valence weighting bias?
A. It is used in mdern technlgy.B. It influences peple’s mental health.
C. It directs what peple d variusly.D. It leads t delays in carrying ut tasks.
13. Students in the first study wuld start participating earlier if they ________.
A. suffered frm valence weighting biasB. drew mre strngly frm psitivity
C. thught prly f their self-disciplineD. cnsidered themselves lack f mtivatin
14. What des the experiment in paragraph 4 indicate?
A. High scres lead t mre cnsideratin.
B. Negative weighting bias can be reversed.
C. Participants need prfessinal knwledge.
D. Measuring prperly is f vital imprtance.
15. What message is cnveyed in the last paragraph?
A. Negative weighting bias can be beneficial.
B. Peple need t strive t be psitive at any time.
C. Psitive peple tend t make randm decisins.
D. Valence weighting bias applies t different situatins.
