Des technlgy replace mre jbs than it creates? What is the net balance between these tw things? Until nw, that has nt been measured. But a new research prject led by MIT ecnmist David Autr has develped an answer, at least fr U.S. histry since 1940.The study uses new methds t examine hw many jbs have been lst t machine ____31____, and hw many have been generated thrugh “augmentatin(增强),” in which technlgy creates new tasks. Overall, the study finds, and particularly since 1980, technlgy has replaced mre U.S. jbs than it has _____32_____.
“There des appear t be a faster rate f autmatin, and a slwer rate f augmentatin, in the last fur decades, frm 1980 t the present, than in the fur decades ____33____,” says Autr.Hwever, that finding is nly ne f the study’s ____34____.The researchers have als develped an entirely new methd fr studying the issue, based n an analysis f thusands f categries in relatin t a(n) ____35____ lk at the text f U.S. patents ver the last century. That has allwed them, fr the first time, tquantifythe effects f technlgy ver bth jb lss and jb creatin.
The study finds that verall, abut 60 percent f jbs in the U.S. represent new types f wrk, which have been created since 1940.T determine this, Autr and his clleagues ____36____ thrugh abut 35,000 jb categries, tracking hw they emerge ver time. They als used natural language prcessing tls t analyze the text f every U.S. patent filed since 1920. That allwed them t ____37____ links between new technlgies and their effects n emplyment.
Frm abut 1940 thrugh 1980, fr instance, jbs like elevatr peratr and typesetter(排字工人) tended t get autmated. But at the same time, mre wrkers —____38____ rles such as shipping and receiving clerks, buyers and department heads, and civil and space engineers. Frm 1980 thrugh 2018, the ranks f cabinetmakers and machinists, amng thers, have been ____39____ by autmatin, while industrial engineers, and peratins and systems researchers and analysts, have enjyed grwth.
Ultimately, the research suggests that the negative effects f autmatin n emplyment were mre than twice as great in the 1980-2018 perid as in the 1940-1980 perid. There was a mre ______40______, and psitive, change in the effect f augmentatin n emplyment in 1980-2018, as cmpared t 1940-1980.

One imprtant value f a guilty pleasure is the _____51_____ it can create between peple. “These shws are ut there fr a reasn — they’re resnating(令人产生共鸣). Nabi said. He added that the cnnectins we make with thers wh share ur interests in such things “is nt t be _____52_____.”
_____53_____, talking abut what we enjy can ease any remaining guilt and makes it easier t discver mre things that bring us pleasure. Being able t talk _____54_____ abut what we lve is mre than just a way t spend the time, since it encurages us t justify ur needs and be ur true self.
Still, it’s best t fllw the age-ld advice ur parents taught us: Everything in mderatin. Thugh guilt can enhance pleasure in sme cases, it can als push us t indulge in _____55_____ we feel guilty abut in thers.

On the 13th f August I wke up, walked utside and headed tward the directin f the river. Sme f the lwer areas were cllecting water but there was n standing water anywhere near my huse r even my neighbrhd. I went back hme and tld my wife we shuld prbably get sme supplies in case this gt serius; that maybe we shuld even pack a car in case we needed t leave thugh I was fairly certain there was nthing t wrry abut.
Abut 30 minutes int slwly packing there was a lud banging n my frnt dr. It was my wife’s cusin. I pened the dr and she said, “What are yu ding?! Get ut f the huse!” I lked behind her and nticed my entire yard underwater and the waterline nly abut a half-inch frm ging ver my drstep and int my huse.
I was flred. The river wasn’t suppsed t crest until the next day. I thught we had mre time.
I yelled at my wife, “We have t get ut f the huse. Nw!”
We packed up bth ur cars in abut 10 minutes with nly ur mst precius memries. Everything else we had built during a 10-year marriage was left behind. We evacuated abut 5 miles east away frm the river t my wife’s grandmthers.
After being there fr abut an hur smene came t the frnt dr and said, “Yu guys ned t get ut. The river is cming.”
Sure enugh, her yard was flding t.
We evacuated a secnd time in as many hurs t her cusin’s huse even further east. After nly an hur we were tld again that the river was n the way and we had t leave.

The Prs and Cns f Napping
    Daytime resting: helpful r harmful?
Getting sme sleep, even a shrt afternn nap, may seem like a gd thing fr peple with sleep disrders. But fr thse with insmnia and an already decreased desire t sleep at night, midday shut-eye can actually be cunterprductive. S befre yu curl up n the cuch this afternn, cnsider whether yur quick fix might backfire when yu lie dwn in bed tnight.
    Truble sleeping at night
If yu have insmnia, naps present a prblem, even if yu feel tired during the day. Napping during the day can perpetuate bad sleep habits fr peple with temprary sleep issues caused by stress, illness, r jet lag t.
“Even just a little bit f a pwer nap reduces yur night time sleep drive,” says Ralph Dwney III, PhD, directr f the Sleep Disrders Center at Lma Linda University Medical Center in Califria. “The nap becmes nthing mre than anther episde f fragmented sleep.”
    Getting thrugh the day
If yu dn’t have a prblem getting yur z’s at night, a quick nap can wrk wnders t pull yu thrugh a tiresme r sleep-deprived day. In fact, a 2008 study fund that a 45-minute daytime nap can imprve memry functin. And previus studies have fund that naps can lwer bld pressure.
Thse wh suffer frm narclepsy r shift-wrk syndrme may als benefit frm daytime naps, says James Wyatt, PhD, directr f the Sleep Disrders Service and Research Center at Rush University Medical Center in Chicag.
Fatigue culd be a warning sign
If yu’re cnstantly fighting the urge t sleep during the day and falling asleep instantly at night, yu might have bstructive sleep apnea, a cnditin in which yu stp breathing while yu sleep.
In this case, naps wn’t help. By wearing a cntinuus psitive airway pressure(CPAP) machine that flws xygen thrugh yur nse, hwever, yu’ll likely sleep mre sundly and wake refreshed whether frm a gd night’s rest r a quick catnap.
    60. If yu suffer frm insmnia________.
    A. midday shut-eye may be helpful
    B. a shrt afternn nap is prbably a gd thing
    C. napping during the day is cnsidered a gd habit

    A. naps are helpful fr thse wh have bstructive sleep apnea
    B. mre xygen thrugh yur nse might imprve sleep quality
    C. a 45-minute daytime nap can be beneficial fr thse with insmnia
    D. a quick nap can pull everyne thrugh a sleep-deprived day

Culd yur dg be prne t a fatal disease? Is yur new shelter pup part beagle r bxer? Many pet wners seek answers t these questins, and as a result, direct-t-cnsumer dg DNA testing is bming.
Human interfering with dg DNA has lng been the driving factr behind dgs’ breed diversity — r lack theref. But a dg’s DNA can als be used t cnfirm their lineage (血统) r identify their breed a bn fr pet wners n the lkut fr breed-specific health r behaviral challenges r thse lking t cnfirm their dg really has the heritage claimed by a breeder r seller. During DNA analysis, labs sequence the dg’s DNA and lk fr similarities with a dataset f identified dg breeds.
But breed identificatin isn’t as simple as it might seem. In a study published in the Jurnal f the American Veterinary Medical Assciatin last mnth, scientists lked int the accuracy f breed predictin in cmmercially available DNA tests that required a pht f the dg in additin t its DNA sample. The results were mixed, says Casey Greene, a prfessr wh c-authred the study.
“Mst tests culd accurately distinguish the breed f purebred dgs,” says Greene. But the analysis suggested that sme testing cmpanies might rely n the pht mre than the dg’s actual genetics — and revealed big differences between cmpanies’ business practices and the genetic datasets they use t determine dg breeds.
The researchers submitted phts and DNA f 12 purebred dgs t a ttal f six cmmercial canine (犬的) ancestry identificatin services. Since each pup was purebred and pssessed extensive American Kennel Club paperwrk, the researchers knew their breed cnclusively—but in sme cases they prvided a pht f a different dg t see if the pht influenced the DNA results. One f the cmpanies misidentified a purebred Chinese crested dg — almst entirely hairless — as a lng-haired Brittany spaniel, seemingly based n the pht alne. The ther five did identify the registered breed crrectly, but ften gave different predictins fr ther “ancestr” breeds in dgs whse DNA suggested mixed breeding in prir generatins. The researchers cncluded that veterinarians and pet wners alike shuld “apprach direct-t-cnsumer tests with cautin” given the lack f industry standardizatin and at least ne cmpany’s reliance n phtgraphs instead f DNA analysis.
Despite these cncerns, thugh. dg DNA seems headed fr a glden age — and the insights revealed thrugh further study f Fid’s genme (基因组) have already reached far beynd the dghuse. Dmesticated dgs have emerged as surprising superstars in medical research that benefits humans. Accrding t researchers, that’s just the beginning. With implicatins ranging frm entertaining t cnsequential, there’s n telling what dg DNA will cntinue t unleash.
    63. The underlined wrd “bn” in paragraph tw is clsest in meaning t ________.
    A. blessingB. substituteC. dutyD. struggle
    64. Accrding t the passage, dg DNA testing can serve the fllwing purpses except that ________.
    A. it assists in accurately determining the breed a dg belngs t
    B. it helps t predict whether dgs are subject t certain diseases
    C. it prvides pet wners with insights int dgs’ behaviral challenges
    D. it sequences the DNA f identified dg breeds t find their similarities
    65. Which f the fllwing statements can be cncluded frm the passage?
A Phts play a mre significant rle in identifying a dg’s breed than its actual genetics.
    B. It is a cmmn phenmenn that the DNA analysis f dgs may yield mixed results.
    C. Cmmercial dg DNA tests still have limitatins and shuld be dealt with cautiusly.
    D. Direct-t-cnsumer tests vershadw DNA analysis in identifying purebred dgs.
    66. What des the passage suggest abut the future f dg DNA testing?
    A. Cntrversies regarding its reliability are here t stay.
    B. It is bund t make breakthrughs in the fields f medicine and entertainment.
    C. It can step int a glden age as lng as sme research limitatins are fixed.
    D. It may have far-reaching significance and be applied t a wider range f areas.

A San Francisc Museum Tackles Art's Instagram Dilemma
A wman held tightly her phne t her heart, the way a missinary might hld a Bible. She was anxius t take a picture f a stunning buquet f flwers that sat nt 10 ft away, but first she had t get thrugh a crwd f thers wh were ding the same.
___67___. Fr the 34th year, flrists were asked t create buquets that respnd t pieces f art n display, frm ancient carvings t cntemprary sculptures. A twer f baby's breath imitates a waterfall in a nearby painting by Gustav Grunewald. Red flaming flwers and nen blue sticks ech a surreal prtrait f a wman by Salvadr Dali.
It’s amazing and als extremely Instagrammable, t the pint that it has becme a prblem. ___68___. Institutins f fine art arund the wrld face similar prblems as the desire t take phtgraphs becmes a huge draw fr museums as well as smething that upsets sme f their spnsrs.
S the de Yung respnded with a kind f agreement: carving ut “pht free” hurs during the exhibitin’s six-day run.
One cmmn cmplaint in the nging debates ver the effect f scial media n museum culture is that peple seem t be missing ut n experiences because they are s busy cllecting evidence f them. A study published in the jurnal Psychlgical Science suggests there is truth t this. It fund that peple wh tk phts f an exhibit rather than simply bserving it had a harder time remembering what they saw.
___69___. Linda Butler the de Yung’s head f marketing, cmmunicatins and visitr experience, acknwledges that nt everyne wants a museum t be “a selfie playland”. Yet a lt f ther peple d, and her take is that the de Yung is in n psitin t claim that ne mtivatin fr buying a $28 ticket is mre valid than anther.
If we remved scial media and phtgraphy, she says, “we shuld risk becming irrelevant”. ___70___. On this visit t the museum, mst peple seemed t treat the pht craze as the new nrmal. Many plitely waited their turn and gt ut f ther peple’s shts, even as visitrs bumped int each ther in crwded galleries.
    A. If this is a battle, signs indicate that the pr-phne crwd has already wn.
    B. But rather than expressing frustratin abut this awkwardness, she said she felt guilty, as if she were the ne challenging cnventin.
    C. In recent years, the de Yung received mre than a thusand cmplaints frm peple wh felt that cell phnes had spiled their experience f the exhibit.
    D. The cause f this recent craze was Buquets t Art, ne f the mst ppular annual events at the de Yung Museum in San Francisc.
    E. The truth is peple like selfies mre than the exhibits way beynd researchers' imaginatin.
    F. But the issue is cmplicated fr the prfessinals running museums.
    IV. Summary Writing 10%
    71. Directins: Read the fllwing passage. Summarize the main idea and the main pint'(s) f the passage in n mre than 60 wrds. Use yur wn wrds as far as pssible.
These days, its nt unusual t see middle-aged men cllecting Star Wars actin figures, ffice wrkers wearing Hell Kitty accessries, r celebrities like David Beckham playing with Leg bricks, it's becming mre and mre cmmn t see adult taking an interest in tys, cmic bks and the activities that are traditinally assciated with children. This phenmenn has given rise t a new wrd: kidult.
What lies behind the phenmenn? One is abut adults' nstalgia(怀旧)fr the carefree days f childhd, and this is especially true with tday's fast-paced, stressful lifestyles. Anther is abut a scietal change in recent decades where peple are starting families later. As a result, they have mre time and mney t spend n themselves. Sme adults culd nly windw-shp fr their dream tys when they were kids, but nw they can affrd that radi-cntrlled car r high-priced dll they have always wanted.
Sciety traditinally disapprves f adults wh refuse t put aside childhd interests, viewing the refusal as a sign f scial immaturity (不成熟) and irrespnsibility. Thse wh agree with this view smetimes claim that kidults are suffering frm the pp-psychlgy cncept knwn as Peter Pan Syndrme, an anmaly(异常)that peple remain emtinally at the level f teenagers.
Frm the standpint f kidults, thugh, this phenmenn is seen as nthing but harmless fun. Kidults insist that having yuthful interests keeps them yung, happy and creative, and their refusal t cnfrm t sciety's acccptable tastes shws independent thinking. Besides, they argue that being part f the scial trend f delayed adulthd is nt purely a persnal chice. The real causes include expensive husing, increased educatinal requirements fr emplyment and pr wrk pprtunities.
