Ruth was frced t mve ften, desperately lking fr wrk as she was nw the nly prvider f the family, and she had t rely n relatives mst f the time. One day Stephen went ut t play with friends and when he came back, he wasn’t even able t speak a single wrd, it seemed he was hurt mentally r smething, but he still gt the curage t cntinue frward. It turned ut that ne f his friends was hit by a train and died, which left an emtinal scar n him.
King, later n, drpped ut f schl due t sme serius health cncerns and was tld that he had t enlist (入伍) again the next fall, which demtivated him t. Althugh Stephen King didn’t see his childhd as smething extrardinary r special, he did say that he was always fascinated by scary things. Peple used t acknwledge the King family by their lve f literature, in fact whenever Stephen’s mm had t g ut, she didn’t hire a babysitter, fr the kids used t read nvels t each ther s they wuld nt get bred. Stephen King’s lve f stries was develped frm a very yung age and he carried that traditin with his wn children alng with his wife Tabitha.
In 1973, Stephen King started his amazing jurney f success when he published his first nvel Carrie, which is scary. The rest fllwed frm after that as he published many amazing bks like The Shining, IT, Firestarter, and Cuj. All f these bks became instant classics and gt their wn mvie and televisin shws adaptins.
    24. What is mainly talked abut abut Stephen King in the first tw paragraphs?

Bred t be sweeter, tday’s cherries, bananas and apples taste different than they used t but nt necessarily better. Amng fruit farmers, the wrd “quality” is nw rutinely used as a standard fr “high in sugar”, thugh firmness, clr and size are als cnsideratins. In a recent study abut ways t enhance the sweetness f fruit using “mlecular (分子的) appraches”, a grup f plant scientists wrte that, in general, the sugar cntent f many fruits are nw higher than befre wing t cntinuus selectin and breeding. Mdern apple varieties, the scientists stressed, were n average sweeter than lder nes.
The sweetness f fruit depends nt just n hw it is bred but als n grwing cnditins, yield and harvest. The lead researcher, Sugiura, said, “If yu culd taste an apple harvested 30 years ag, yu wuld feel the difference.” He believed that mdern apples are picked s early that even if they are bred fr sweetness, they ften dn’t develp their full character. The fragrance never develps in fruit that is harvested t early.
Jim Cper, an apple farmer in England, is regretful t admit the fact that many peple will never taste the “strawberry hint” in a really ripe Pearmain, a type f heritage apple. In a way, the rise f cnsistently sweeter fruit in ur lifetimes has been a victry f plant breeding. After all, it’s a rare persn wh wuld seek ut bitter grapes if they culd have sweet nes instead.
But the sweetness f mdern fruit is nt withut its prblems, especially fr peple with diabetes (糖尿病), wh have t reduce their intake f higher-sugar fruits. Fruit that is bred sweeter als tends t be lwer in the chemicals that make it healthy. Cnsidering health, maybe the real prblem with mdern fruit is that it has becme yet anther sweet thing in a wrld with sugar. Even grapefruits, which used t be quite bitter, are smetimes nw as sweet as ranges. If yu’ve never tasted a sur cherry, hw can yu fully appreciate a sweet ne?
    28. In what aspect is many fruits different frm befre?
    A. Bright clr.B. Sft skin.C. Sugar cntent.D. High yield.
    29. Why did Sugiura express discntent with the present fruits?
    A. They are bred t early.B. They are lsing a gd flavr.
    C. They taste s sweet.D. They need a higher yield.
    30. What is Cper’s attitude twards mdern fruit breeding?
    A. Critical.B. Ambiguus.C. Favrable.D. Uncaring.
    31. What’s the main idea f the last paragraph?
    A. The sweetness f fruits will cause health issues.
    B. It’s a wise chice t breed fruits fr sweetness.
    C. Breeding sweet fruits imprves the quality f fruits.
    D. Sme fruits like grapes and cherries taste the same.
    D
Researchers have designed a hand-held device that can btain and change water mlecules (分子) frm the air int drinkable water using nly surrunding sunlight as its energy surce.
This atmspheric water harvester (大气层水分收集器) used an ultra-prus (超多孔的) material, knwn as a metal-rganic framewrk (MOF). It can btain water repeatedly in the httest and driest place in Nrth America, Death Valley Natinal Park. The tests shwed the device culd prvide clean water anywhere, addressing an urgent prblem, as climate change speeds up drught cnditins.
“Almst ne-third f the wrld’s ppulatin lives in water-stressed areas. The UN predicts that almst 5 billin peple n ur planet will experience sme kind f water stress fr a significant part f the year 2050,”said Omar Yaghi. He is the Berkeley chemistry prfessr wh invented MOFs and is leading this study. “It is very imprtant t take advantage f a new surce fr water.”
Other kinds f materials, such as salts r hydrgels (水凝胶), cannt perate in extreme weather cnditins in an energy-efficient manner. The new MOF-pwered harvesters can be a pwerful tl t address water shrtage issues related t anything frm drinking water t agriculture. This technlgy can als be used t btain pure water in areas where water is plentiful but nt clean.
It’s als extremely efficient at harvesting water, releasing 85 t 90 percent f the water it btains. It harvested up t 285 grams f water per kilgram f the metal-rganic framewrk in a day, the amunt f a cup f water. It’s als smaller than the earlier type but it is even mre energy-efficient. It prduced 200 grams f clean water per square meter f water vapr, mre than three times the water prductivity rate f the earlier type.
There will likely be further develpments in efficiency and size fr this device. Yaghi said, “He can see ne day the widespread adptin f husehld-based MOF-pwered water harvesters and cmmunity-scale (社区规模的) water harvesters with the help f data science and machine learning. Thse can be in kitchens r even next t air cnditiners t supply hmes with clean water fr cking and cleaning. And sme cmpanies are already wrking n this.”
    32. What can we say abut the new hand-held device?
    A. It helps clean the air. B. It can handle water pllutin.
    C. It is nly suitable in dry areas. D. It can run withut additinal pwer surces.
    33. What des the authr intend t d in the third paragraph?
    A. T stress the fact f water shrtage.
    B. T shw the necessity f the harvester.
    C. T shw the increasing ppulatin in water-stressed areas.
    D. T warn against the harm caused by climate change.
    34. Hw much water can we get using a harvester with tw kilgrams f the MOF daily?
    A. Abut 570 grams. B. Abut 513 grams .C. Abut 400 grams. D. Abut 360 grams.
    35. Which f the fllwing statements abut the MOF-pwered harvester may Yaghi agree with?
    A. It will be easier t use in the future. B. It will functin best in the kitchen.
    C. It will have huge market ptential. D. It will help prmte technlgies in AI.

Sn, I tk my place n the stage. I remembered every step and every mve. When the music was ver, the crwd burst int cheers. At that mment, I felt like a dancing queen!
I stepped ff the stage and expressed my thanks t Isla, wh was ready t sing. I was a little wrried at the beginning because the crwd became restless. Luckily, Isla ignred it. I std up, shuting, “Isla, yu are the best!” Her hmemade dress was shining in the light, but her eyes were cluded with tears. When Isla’s singing died dwn, all the students were still lst in her unique vice. Sme even began singing like her, and then mre. Their singing resunded arund the hall. I rushed t the stage after her perfrmance, hugging her cheerfully. That was enugh! We culd never be distanced.
