When humans are feeling lnely, we can call r vide chat with friends and family wh live far away. But, scientists asked, what abut pet parrts? New research suggests that these chatty creatures may als benefit frm virtually cnnecting with their peers.
The idea fr this study was nt randm: In the wild, parrts tend t live in large grups. But when kept in as pets, these scial birds are ften n their wn. Feeling bred and lnely, they may develp psychlgical issues and can even turn t self-harming behaviurs like pulling ut their feathers.
In the study, researchers wanted t see whether 18 pet parrts culd learn t make and receive vide calls when they needed t help reduce lneliness. In the initial stage, the birds learnt t ring a bell and then tuch a pht f anther bird n a tablet screen t start a call t that bird. Calls wuld nly wrk when caregivers were able t assist at bth ends. In the secnd stage, the parrts culd chse t call ther birds at their wn will by ringing the bell then selecting the bird they wanted t call. During a tw-mnth study perid, wners said they recrded 147 deliberate calls between birds.
“We saw sme really encuraging results frm the study,” said researchers. The parrts seemed t grasp that they were truly engaging with ther birds nscreen and their behaviur ften mirrred what we wuld expect frm real-life interactins between these types f birds. “She came alive during the calls,” ne pet wner said abut her bird, accrding t a Nrtheastern University statement.
The team has previusly designed similar technlgy such as DgPhne, which allwed pet dgs t shake a ball t cmmunicate with their wner. “The animal Internet is already here—there are hundreds f prducts n the market that let pet wners interact with their animals remtely ver the net, but their design is primarily fcused n what humans want, nt what their pets need,” Hirskyj-Duglas frm the University f Glasgw added.
4. Why did researchers want t teach parrts t make vide calls?
A. T assess the effects f vide calls n animals.
B. T train parrts’ cmmunicatin skills.
C. T help get pet parrts ut f bad mds.
D. T imprve the relatinships between parrts.

The Blue Planet Ⅱ's latest episde fcuses n hw the plastic is having a destructive effect n the cean and slwly pisning ur sea creatures. Researchers recently als fund that sea creatures living in the deepest place n Earth, the Mariana Trench, have plastics in their stmachs. Indeed, ceans are drwned in plastics.
Thugh it seems that the wrld culdn't pssibly functin withut plastics, plastics are a remarkably recent inventin. The first plastic bags were intrduced in the 1950s, the same decade when plastic packaging began gaining ppularity in the United States. This grwth has happened s fast that science is still catching up with the change. Plastics pllutin research, fr instance, is still a very early science.
We put all these plastics int the envirnment, but we still dn't really knw what the utcmes are ging t be. What we d knw, thugh, is disturbing. The cean plastic is estimated t kill millins f marine animals every year. Nearly 700 species, including endangered nes, are knwn t have been affected by it. One in three leatherback turtles, which ften mistake plastic bags fr jellyfish, have been fund with plastics in their bellies. Ninety percent f seabirds are nw eating plastics n a regular basis. By 2050, that figure is expected t rise t 100 percent.
And it's nt just wildlife that is threatened by the plastics in ur seas. Humans are cnsuming plastics thrugh the seafd we eat. I culd understand why sme peple see the cean plastic as a disaster, wrth being mentined in the same breath as climate change. But the cean plastic is nt as cmplicated as climate change. There are n cean trash deniers(否认者), at least s far. T d smething abut it, we dn't have t remake ur planet energy system.
This is nt a prblem where we dn't knw what the slutin is. We knw hw t pick up garbage. Anyne can d it. We knw hw t deal with it. We knw hw t recycle. We can all start by thinking twice befre we use single-use plastic prducts. Things may seem rdinary, like using a reusable bttle r a reusable bag, but when taken cllectively, these chices really d make a difference.
8. Why is plastic pllutin research still a very early science?
A. The plastics pllutin research is t difficult.
B. Plastics have prduced less pllutin than cal.
C. The wrld culdn't pssibly functin withut plastics.
D. Plastics have gained ppularity t fast fr science t catch up with.
9. Hw did the authr supprt his pinin in Paragraph 3?
A. By citing qutes frm leading experts.
B. By making a cmparisn and cntrast.
C. By presenting slid statistics.
D. By listing examples frm his wn experience.
10. What des the authr intend t tell us in the last paragraph?
A. We reap(收获) what we sw.
B. The shrtest answer is ding.
C. All things are difficult befre they are easy.
D. Actins speak luder than wrds.
11. What is the main idea f the passage?
A. The ceans becme chked with plastics.
B. The cean plastic is a glbal issue.
C. The Blue Planet Ⅱ Has left viewers heartbrken.
D. Plastics gain ppularity all ver the wrld.

Pupils (瞳孔) respnd t mre than just light. They can indicate ne’s interest r mental exhaustin. Pupil dilatin (扩大) is even used by the plice t detect lies. Nw wrk cnducted in ur labratry suggests that the pupil size is clsely related t individual differences in intelligence. The larger the pupils are, the higher the intelligence is, as measured by the tests f reasning, attentin and memry.
We first uncvered this surprising relatinship while studying differences in the amunt f mental effrt peple used t cmplete memry tasks. We used pupil dilatin as an indicatr f effrt, a technique psychlgist Dani Kahneman ppularized in the 1960s and 1970s. When we discvered a relatinship between the pupil size and intelligence, we weren’t sure if it was real r what it meant.
Curiusly, we cnducted several large-scale studies in which we recruited mre than 500 peple aged 18 t 55 frm the Atlanta cmmunity. We measured the participants’ pupils at rest while they stared at a blank cmputer screen fr up t fur minutes with an eye tracker. All the while, the eye tracker was recrding. Using the tracker, we then calculated each participant’s pupil size.
T be clear, the pupil size refers t the diameter (直径) f the black circular aperture in the center f the eye. The pupil is surrunded by the clrful area knwn as the iris (虹膜), which is respnsible fr cntrlling the size f the pupil. Pupils becme tighter and smaller in respnse t bright light, s we kept the labratry dim (昏暗的) fr all participants.
In the next part f the experiment, the participants cmpleted a series f tests designed t measure “fluid intelligence”, the capacity t reasn thrugh new prblems, “wrking memry capacity”, the ability t remember infrmatin ver a perid f time, and “attentin cntrl”, the ability t fcus attentin amid distractins and interference.
We fund that a larger pupil size was crrelated with greater fluid intelligence, attentin cntrl and, t a lesser degree, wrking memry capacity—indicating a fascinating relatinship between the brain and the eyes. Interestingly, the pupil size was negatively crrelated with age: lder participants tended t have smaller pupils. Once standardized fr age, hwever, the relatinship between the pupil size and intelligence remained.
12. Which f the fllwing statements might Daniel Kahneman supprt?
A. Thse with big eyes have gd memry.
B. Pupil dilatin can cause mental exhaustin.
C. The pupil size is related t ne’s intelligence.
D. Pupil dilatin can reflect ne’s mental effrt.

A. T cmplete their memry tasks.
B. T study the functin f the pupil.
C. T test whether their discvery is true.
D. T find a way t recrd the pupil size.
14. The labratry was kept dim s that the participants culd________.
A. whlly fcus n the tests
B. better respnd t bright light
C. cntrl the size f their pupils
D. keep their eyes pen cmfrtably
15. What is a suitable title fr the text?
A. Can yu “see” the gd frm the bad?
B. The eyes d cmmunicate varius emtins.
C. The eyes may be the windw t the brain as well.
D. Why des the pupil size crrelate with intelligence?
