Abstract painter Harld Chen had represented Britain at imprtant festivals with his il paintings and was seeking a new challenge by the end f 1960s. “Maybe there are mre interesting things ging n utside my studi than inside it,” he thught. Chen turned frm the canvas t the screen, using cmputers t find new ways f creating art. In the late 1960s, he created a prgram that he named Aarn. It was the first artificial intelligence sftware in the wrld f fine art, and Chen first presented Aarn in 1974 at the University f Califrnia.
Nw, with AI dminating the headlines, a new exhibitin at New Yrk’s Whitney Museum f American Art, “Harld Chen: Aarn,” running thrugh June 2024, draws attentin t Chen’s pineering wrk. The Whitney is ffering smething deeper than mst previus Aarn exhibits: a real-time experience, in which visitrs can watch the sftware prduce art.
Chen seeded Aarn with all srts f knwledge: abut basic bjects, physics, and fundamental techniques f drawing. Aarn uses this knwledge t fllw instructins, cmplete tasks, and make decisins like human beings — a very different apprach frm tday’s generative AI art prgrams, which dn't draw frm scratch (从零开始) but rather rely n databases f images. Versins f Aarn still generate utput, but anything dne after Chen’s death in 2016 is nt cnsidered genuine.
The Whitney is shwcasing tw versins f Chen’s sftware, alng with the art that each prduced befre Chen died. The 2001 versin, Aarn KCAT, generates images f figures and plants and prjects them nt a wall mre than ten feet high, while the 2007 versin prduces jungle-like scenes. The sftware will als create art physically, n paper, fr the first time since the 1990s. “It is abslutely thrilling,” said Christiane Paul, the museum’s directr f digital art, “t have ne f thse remarkable treasures f digital art in the cllectin.”

    A. The masterpieces f digital art. B. A new shw f the art wrld’s first AI.

Have yu ever wndered abut the universal layut (布局) f supermarkets? Smart designers are behind it, subtly tempting yu t walk thrugh each aisle and fill yur cart withut even realizing it.

There’s als a reasn why yu ften feel lst in lcal supermarkets. Shckingly, they mve things arund. Reeves explained, “They are very much aware that these strategies becme less effective after yu visit the stre a few times and get a better sense f where everything is, s they’ll regularly mve the prducts t different aisles t cnfuse yu. The practice is nt limited t a specific stre but is emplyed acrss varius retail chains.”
“Their little tricks always wrk n me,” ne regular shpper admits, “I walk in t get three things and end up spending $300; that’s why I hate grcery shpping,” he said. On the ther hand, sme shppers are prud t declare they have never fallen int the trap. “That’s why I always keep a shpping list n me,” anther shpper shared. “I’ve started having my grceries delivered. If I have t g t the stre, I never grab a cart. If I can’t carry it, I’m nt buying it,” he added.

Cncrete has served as the fundatin stne f the cnstructin industry fr hundreds f years. Hwever, the prcess f prducing cncrete is ne f the mst envirnmentally unfriendly prcesses in the wrld. In the prcess, nt nly is carbn dixide (二氧化碳) released int the air by the energy used t heat the limestne, but the limestne itself als gives ut a huge amunt f the element.
Luckily, a number f start-ups thrughut the wrld are using creative thinking t make the cnstructin industry a whle lt mre friendly fr the planet.
A Canadian cmpany called CarbnCure, has fund a way t inject (注入) cncrete with carbn dixide itself. Nt nly des this trap the carbn dixide int the cncrete, keeping it frm running away int the atmsphere, but it als creates a super strng material called calcium carbnate, which reduces the ttal amunt f cncrete that needs t be used.
Califrnia-based Brimstne, is creating carbn-negative cncrete by ding away with limestne entirely and instead using silicate rck, a material that des nt release carbn dixide when heated. Instead, the prcess prduces magnesium (镁) , which absrbs carbn dixide, as the basis fr their cncrete.
Additinally, researchers at Australia’s RMIT University have recently released a study shwing that adding cffee grunds instead f sand t cncrete culd make it much strnger, reducing bth the amunt f sand used, as well as the amunt f cncrete that wuld need t be used in the final prduct.
The biggest barrier at this pint is cnvincing members f the industry that the new types f cncrete are safe t be used, accrding t Stacy Smedley, directr at a nnprfit fcused n decarbnizing cnstructin.
Hpefully these new slutins t the envirnmental prblems f cncrete will sn be widely adpted. Given the significant part the cnstructin industry has in releasing carbn dixide int the atmsphere, great imprvements can be made when mre envirnmentally-friendly materials are used.
    12. What is the envirnmental issue assciated with traditinal cncrete prductin?
    A. The high demand fr energy.B. The prcessing f waste materials.
    C. The mass release f carbn dixide.D. The use f nn-renewable resurces.
    13. Hw des CarbnCure deal with the envirnmental impact f cncrete prductin?
A By using silicate rck as the basis.B. By putting carbn dixide int cncrete.
    C. By replacing sand with cffee grunds.D. By absrbing carbn dixide with magnesium.
    14. Accrding t Smedley, what is the majr challenge facing these slutins?
    A. Difficulty in making prfits.B. Cnvincing the public f the cnvenience.
    C. Lack f funding fr research.D. Remving the industry members’ safety cncerns.
    15. What is the authr’s purpse in writing the text?
    A. T prmte an alternative t cncrete.B. T advcate envirnmental prtectin.
    C. T intrduce new ways t prduce cncrete.D. T emphasize the significance f creativity.
