He was curius, I suppse, r maybe he was stupid—hw else can yu explain it?
He must have knwn abut men and guns. But he came clser, putting ne ft befre the ther, slwly and purpsefully. His big eyes never mved frm my face. Well, that deer walked right up t me. Then he stpped and lked at me!
What happened next is hard t believe, but it’s true. And it all seemed quite natural. Just as when a friendly puppy cmes near yu, I reached up and scratched his head, right between the hrns. And he liked t be scratched. That big, wild, beautiful deer bent his head like a yung hrse. In fact, he practically asked fr mre. I scratched his head and his nse pked at my shulder. He didn’t even tremble. Well, he finally went his way, dwn the hill and up the deer trail. Sht him? Nt me. Yu wuldn’t have either, nt after that. I just watched him g.
There’s very little mre t tell. I picked up my therms, and started walking back. I was abut half way back when I heard tw shts, fllwed by a dull slam a few secnds later. Thse tw shts usually mean a kill. I had frgtten there were ther hunters that day.

A lt f manufactured glass tday made frm sand and sdium carbnate (碳酸钠) can be reused r melted dwn and recycled int new items, but it desn’t break dwn in the envirnment and will sit in landfills fr thusands f years. A team f Chinese scientists aimed t deal with this envirnmental cncern by develping an ec-cnscius alternative.
In a study published recently in the jurnal Science Advances, a team at the Chinese Academy f Sciences’ Institute f Prcess Engineering describe hw they engineered bidegradable glass made frm amin acids (氨基酸). That glass wuld have a smaller impact n the envirnment and can break dwn in a few weeks r in several mnths.
In a test, glass beads made ut f amin acids were placed under the skin f mice, and the breakdwn f the bead and the skin healing prcess were bserved fr 30 days. A diagram frm the study shws hw the mice’s bdies brke dwn the beads. In that mnth, the glass implant degraded beneath the skin, the wund site healed, and fur grew back. “Thrughut the experimental perid, n mice exhibited any pain-related behavir that may have been caused by the glass implantatin, and nne f them experienced bvius weight lss,” the researchers wrte in their paper.
Althugh amin acids d degrade ver time in the envirnment, this bidegradable glass is nt as durable as traditinal glass, because amin acids can break dwn quickly in heat. T vercme this prblem, the researchers chemically mdified amin acids using the heating-cling prcess tailred fr manufacturing the new glass. This is when materials fr the glass are heated t becme sft and then rapidly cled s as t make the glass tugher.
“It’s imprtant t pint ut that this bidegradable glass is currently in the lab stage, and far frm large-scale cmmercializatin,” emphasized Yan Xuehai, a prfessr invlved in the study, in a press release.

C.Swllen wund sites f the mice.
D.Apparent weight lsses f the mice.
29.What makes the stability f the new glass pssible?

B.The adptin f traditinal glass manufacturing prcedures.
C.The prlnged expsure t heat during glass prductin.
D.The rapid degradatin f amin acids in the envirnment.
30.What is Yan Xuehua’s attitude tward the study?
    A.Disapprving.B.Objective.
    C.Ambiguus.D.Dismissive.
31.What is the main idea f the text?
A.Amin acids make ec-friendly glass durable.

C.Bidegradable glass ffers a slutin t eclgical sustainability.
D.Amin acids prvide inspiratin in glass manufacturing.

The biggest televisin drama has been the stry f hw peple watch it. Ten years ag nearly nine ut f ten American husehlds subscribed t cable (有线电视) r satellite TV. Tday little mre than half d. The cllapse f pay-TV, with the advance in nline streaming, has shifted the televisin industry, frcing studis t rethink their business mdel. The pace f tearing up the cntracts is nly increasing. But nt everywhere. Eurpeans are signing up fr cable and satellite TV in greater numbers than ever.
Why has American media’s trend missed Eurpe? One reasn is the price. America’s cable industry lks mre cmpetitive: the largest telecmmunicatins cmpany has nly a quarter f the market. But it is highly reginalised, s mst hmes have few ptins. The result is an average mnthly cable bill f nearly 100. British hmes pay less than half the price.
Als, American cable is running ut f shws as studis mve their best nes t their wn streaming platfrms. In Eurpe, where sme streaming platfrms have yet t be launched, pay-TV firms keep the rights t many f the mst ppular titles. Britns seeking the third seasn f Successin, fr instance, must g t the satellite TV, since there’s n ther chice.
The last reasn is that American streaming platfrms have partnered with pay-TV firms in Eurpe rather than cmpeting with them. In the race fr subscribers, the quickest way fr streaming platfrms t expand in Eurpe is t jin frces with satellite and cable cmpanies. They are the nes with access t cnsumers and the ability t handle lcal marketing and ad sales.
Will the trend eventually crss the Atlantic? As lng as studis cntinue t license lcal cmpanies t bradcast their prgrams, cnsumers will have every reasn t stick with pay- TV. In the lng run, thugh, studis wuld rather bring viewers nt their wn platfrms. And the cnditin culd be different.
32.What des the underlined phrase in the first paragraph mean?
    A.Refusing nline streaming.
    B.Changing the TV industry.
    C.Breaking prmises t users.
    D.Stpping using pay-TV.

    A.Lw price.B.Its cnvenience.
    C.Its cntent.D.Related technlgy.
34.What is the way fr streaming platfrms t gain Eurpean subscribers quickly?
    A.Cutting dwn n their charges.
    B.Cperating with lcal pay-TV firms.
C.Setting up satellite and cable cmpanies.
    D.Investigating Eurpean cnsumers’ preference.

As ur teacher, Mrs. Parmele, penned his name in the rll bk, whispers f disapprval began flating frm rw t rw.

Nbdy did. I held my breath, hping Mrs. Parmele wuldn’t ntice the empty desk next t mine. She did and pinted him in that directin. He smiled at me as he slid int the seat, but I turned my eyes away.
A week passing by, Jhn still had n friend. “It’s his fault,” I tld my mther ne night. “He barely even knws hw t cunt.” My mther had grwn t knw Jhn thrugh my nightly cmments. She always listened patiently and smetimes ndded thughtfully.
Anther day at lunchtime, “Can I sit by yu?” Jhn std by me, plate in hand and smile n face. I lked arund and agreed a bit unwillingly. As I watched him eat and listened t him chat, it dawned n me that he was actually pleasant t be arund. And I was determined Jhn wuld remain friendless n lnger.
One evening, when Mther kissed me gd night, I uttered, “Mm, tmrrw is Jhn’s birthday. He’s nt ging t get anything. N cake. N presents. Nbdy even cares.” Mther and I bth knew whenever a kid had a birthday, his mther wuld bring cupcakes fr the class. But Jhn’s mther wrked all day. His special day wuld g unnticed! “Dn’t wrry,” Mm said, “I’m sure everything will turn ut fine.”
The next day, I wished Jhn a happy birthday first thing in the mrning, and his embarrassed smile shwed me he was glad I had remembered. Till the last class, nthing special happened.
