Then there’s the ne my Clmbian family des every year: the Nvena de Aguinalds. We pray(祈祷)fr nine days withut a stp, and this Nvena cunts dwn the nine days befre Christmas. Mst Americans have never heard f it, but in Clmbia, it’s a big deal.
Like all gd traditins, especially arund the hlidays, this traditin is abut cmmunity and getting tgether with friends and family. My family immigrated(移民)frm Clmbia when I was just tw mnths ld. Every year, we gather with a grup f Clmbian friends fr as many f the nine nights as we can.
There are three parts t the Nvena de Aguinalds. The first is the reading: each kid takes turns t read a bk. Next cmes the gzs which means “The Jys”. That’s where the music cmes in, and everyne gets an instrument, a maraca, a drum, a tin can—whatever yu can use t make a sund. And then, the villancics——Spanish Christmas carls(颂歌)cme.
I’ve lived my whle life in the US. There’s nt a lt f Clmbian culture that we still hang nt. Why d we still carry n with the traditin f celebrating the Nvenas, then?
When I asked my parents the ther day, the answer was that immigrants didn’t belng anywhere—nt where yu were, nr where yu were frm. S my parents helped create a space where we did. Even if the Nvenas were nthing like what we might have celebrated if we’d stayed in Clmbia, the Nvenas became the heart f ur cmmunity.
But ur Nvenas are starting t feel a little mre breakable. It’s getting harder and harder fr everyne t get tgether each year. Last year, I was studying abrad in Italy and culdn’t make it t any gathering; my brther went ff t cllege and had exams late int December; my sister just mved t a new city, and my parents have taken up jbs in different cuntries.
