A century ag, kids were transprted t schl by all kinds f randm vehicles. Because there were n natinal standards, it was up t states r individual schl districts t hire buses, trucks and even hrse-drawn wagns t cnvey kids t and frm schl.
Frank Cyr didn't like this system. Back in the 1930s, Cyr was a prfessr at Teachers Cllege, Clumbia University, and an advcate fr rural educatin. Cyr traveled the cuntry cnducting a study f schl transprtatin. "In many cases, standards have been set up by mre r less hit-and-miss methds," reprted Cyr in a New Yrk Times article. He decided that smething needed t be dne t keep America's schlkids safe.
S in 1939, Cyr rganized a cnference in New Yrk City dedicated t imprving and standardizing the American schl bus. He invited educatrs, transprtatin fficials frm 48 states and bus manufacturers t design a newer, safer schl bus. They chse the symblic yellw-range clr that was riginally knwn as "Natinal Schl Bus Chrme".
Cyr wasn't a scientist r a safety expert, but he instinctively made the cnnectin between bright clrs, visibility and vehicle safety. "Based upn the standards f 1939, yellw was a very intelligent chice," says Dr. Stephen Slmn, a retired ptmetrist(验光师)and funder f Visibility in Mtin, which des cnsulting fr emergency services prviders. "The clrs that are mst easily seen by the human eye are the yellws—the yellw-green t yellw t greenish-yellw," says Slmn. "That's at the peak f the visibility range."
Slmn explains that clr visin is determined by phtreceptr cells in the retina(视网膜)called cnes(视锥细胞). There are three types f cnes, each tuned t detect different wavelengths f light: red, green and blue. Yellw light stimulates bth the red and green cnes at the same time, which is why the eye is mst sensitive t clrs in the yellw range.

The average American gets abut 4,000 steps a day—but hw much is enugh? Accrding t a recent study f mre than 72,000 peple, getting in 9,000 t 10,000 daily steps cuts the risk f death by mre than a third and reduced cardivascular(心血管)disease risk by at least 20 percent, but even smaller increases shwed benefits.
Ashley Gdwin, ne f the study's authrs, says the study really builds n the evidence we already knw abut hw walking can help lwer cardivascular risk and death. He fund it especially amazing that the benefit differed s little between thse wh sat fr lng perids each day and thse wh sat less. "That's really great because it drives hme the message that simply walking a little bit mre than yu usually d is ging t bring sme health benefits, n matter where yu're starting frm."
Past research had shwn that higher step cunts are linked t better heart health and a lnger life, and a separate bdy f research has shwn the increased risks f cardivascular disease and death assciated with mre sedentary(久坐)time. But this study brught thse bdies f research tgether t learn if extra daily steps culd ffset(抵消)the risks f sedentary behavir even in thse wh spend much f the day seated.
The results shw that bth highly sedentary and less sedentary peple had statistically similar risk reductins frm higher step cunts. But the findings als reveal that the mre steps peple had per day, the mre their risk f heart disease r death fell, up until abut 9,000 t 9,700 daily steps fr highly sedentary peple.
In fact, highly sedentary peple in the study began experiencing a heart benefit starting as lw as 4,300 steps per day, when their risk f heart disease fell by 10 percent. Dubling that step cunts t 9,700 steps a day dubled the benefit. Similarly, highly sedentary peple began seeing a 20 percent reduced risk f death starting at 4,100 steps per day. Again, that benefit nearly dubled t 39 percent when their daily step cunts increased t 9,000.
    32. What is newly fund in the study?
    A. Higher step cunts are linked t a lnger life.
    B. Walking 10,000 steps a day is nt suitable fr everyne.
    C. A small increase in peple's usual step cunts is beneficial.
    D. The average American gets arund 4,000 steps each day.
    33. What makes Gdwin surprised?
    A. The mre steps peple get, the healthier they are.
    B. Walking can treat cardivascular diseases t sme degree.
    C. Peple can benefit frm walking withut walking t fast.
    D. Walking has similar effect n sedentary peple and active peple.
    34. What is ne aim f the study?
    A. T research hw step cunts differ frm peple t peple.
    B. T examine hw walking can help lwer cardivascular risk.
    C. T knw whether extra daily steps ffset the risks f being sedentary.
    D. T check whether sedentary life can lead t increased risks f death.
    35. What is the functin f the figures in the last paragraph?
    A. T list the recmmended step cunts.
    B. T shw the link between step cunts and health.
    C. T warn peple f the harm f sedentary lifestyle.
    D. T cmpare the steps f active peple and inactive peple.
