Tired f the busy and chatic life in Las Vegas, Nevada fr nearly ten years, my family and I decided t slw things dwn. We wanted t lead an envirnmental-friendly life.
Nne f us felt that this culd be accmplished where we were living and we all agreed that a mve t the cuntry wuld be great fr everyne.
Befre lng we set abut lking fr a hme in Yucca, Arizna, a very small twn f less than 1,000 peple. When I called t inquire abut the prperty, I was infrmed that there was n electricity available in the area. What? N electricity? I almst denied the idea immediately. But what better way is there t g green? After giving it a secnd thught, we decided t put in an ffer and mved in n Thanksgiving Day.
When we first mved t the prperty, we did sme remdeling (改造) and stayed in ur mtr hme. We were cnfrnted with real challenges at the time. But the frustratins just made us wrk harder. We slwly gt things fixed and mved int the huse after 38 days.
While living here fr the past fur mnths has been a big adjustment, there are many benefits t living ff the grid (电线). I think ne f the mst educatinal lessns is teaching my kids the imprtance f cnservatin. They used t take water, pwer and gas fr granted. We started taking quicker shwers, ding nly full lads f laundry, turning ff the water while brushing ur teeth. In additin, we are als trying t make ther changes which include reducing the amunt f trash we generate by recycling, grwing ur wn rganic vegetables and re-purpsing things that we wuld nrmally thrw.
Overall, ging ff the grid has been great fr ur family. I hpe that nce my kids mve ut f the huse, they will keep the habits that they have learned by living ff the grid.

The sperm whale is an astnishing creature. It’s lnger than a semi-truck, weighs mre than 90, 000 punds and is the largest member f the tthed whale family. It’s knwn t dive 6, 500 feet in search f fd, and t stay dwn there fr lnger than an hur at a time.
Perhaps mst fantastically, the sperm whale’s brain weighs as much as 20 punds-the biggest f any species n Earth. But when it cmes t brains, is size all that matters? There’s a lt we dn’t knw abut the sperm whale’s intelligence because it’s difficult t carry ut neurlgical (神经的) testing n such a huge marine mammal. But sme clues pint t sperm whales being much smarter than we give them credit fr.
A 2021 study published in Bilgy Letters, fr example, lked back t 19th-century histrical lgbks frm whalers. Researchers fund that sperm whales were at first easy t catch-but almst immediately, the whales learned hw t evade hunters and whaling success drpped by 60 percent. The study suggests that the whales passed infrmatin t ne anther thrugh sundwaves t avid being caught.
Animals that have big brains usually have a few things in cmmn. They usually live lng lives; fr example, sperm whales can live fr 70 years r lnger. Additinally, they’re capable f cmplex behavirs and they tend t be mre scia1. Whales may wrk tgether t hunt r cmmunicate in a language all their wn.
What’s mre, humans, whales and dlphins all have spindle neurns in their brains. These nerve cells make us capable f deeper thught, such as reasning skills, memry, cmmunicatin and adaptive thinking. And like humans, whales have emtinal intelligence- meaning they're capable f empathy, grief and sadness. Still, in prprtin t (与…成比例)ur bdy size, the human brain is bigger than that f the sperm whale.
Yet there’s still s much we dn’t knw abut hw smart sperm whales really are. And just like the whalers f a century ag, we have likely been underestimating marine mammals, whether large r small, fr as lng as we’ve knwn f their existence.

B.Sperm Whales Have the Biggest Brain

Many f the Earth's creatures die because f humans' chices. These chices have nthing t d with fd r shelter r anything else that helps humans survive. What kills millins f animals all ver the wrld is that humans want t make mney by ding s.
Peple use parts f animals fr everything frm hats t handbags, frm jewelry t ashtrays and t make pwders that suppsedly imprve a persn's life. Deciding that a species is endangered and prtecting it by law are nt always enugh. Peple wh kill wildlife illegally rarely get caught.
During the late 1980s, saving elephants became a ppular cause. Wildlife prtectin grups made sure everyne saw pictures r films f elephants with their faces cut ff fr their ivry. These grups als prved that certain ppulatins f elephants were decreasing. As a result, mst peple stpped buying bjects made f ivry. Laws against paching (偷猎) were made strnger. Many cuntries made imprting ivry illegal. Killing elephants fr their Ivry became mre risky and less prfitable (有利可图的).
Hwever, cncern fr certain species will becme weak after a while. In the late 1970s, peple prtested (抗议) against the killing f seal babies. Everyne was shcked t see yung seals being killed in their icy habitat. The cruel activity stpped. But ten years later, the number f seal babies killed was higher than ever.
Other animal prtectin mvements have cme and gne, such as saving the whales and prtecting dlphins. The whale ppulatin appears t have increased fr nw. And the laws are finally changed in America t prtect the dlphins that swim with tuna fish in parts f the Pacific Ocean.
In the years t cme, peple's attentin will prbably turn t sme ther endangered species. Plenty f them urgently need attentin. During this time, will the elephants be frgtten?
12.What leads t the disappearance f millins f wild animals?
    A.The grwing human ppulatin.
B.Humans’ hpe fr making a frtune.
C.Humans’ t much need fr wild fd.
D.Nt having enugh laws n wildlife prtectin..
13.What can yu infer frm the text abut what happened in the late 1980s?

B.Imprting ivry in all cuntries is illegal.
C.Thse wh killed elephants all gt caught.
    D.Hunting was cmpletely nt allwed.

A.T shw the effrt t prtect seal babies.
B.T shw an increasing number f seal babies.
C.T shw the decrease f wrry abut certain species.
D.T shw peple’s prtest against the killing f seal babies.

C.Success has been achieved in quite a few cases f wildlife prtectin.
D.Cncern and mvements fr animal prtectin shuld be always kept.
