Wild African elephants may break sleep recrds fr mammals (哺乳动物). New data shw that they seem t survive n abut tw hurs f shut-eye a night. Much f that sleeping tk place while they were standing up. The animals lie dwn t sleep nly nce every three t fur nights.

In zs, elephants have been recrded sleeping frm abut three hurs t nearly seven during a 24-hur perid. Trunks, like human hands, are imprtant fr explring the wrld. Elephants hardly keep them still—unless sleeping. The researchers thught that a trunk mnitr that didn’t mve fr at least five minutes likely meant its hst was asleep.
The mnitrs tracked the animals ver abut a mnth. During that time, the elephants averaged just tw hurs f sleep a day. What’s mre, the elephants were able t skip a night’s sleep withut needing extra rest the next day. Thse trunk implants shwed there were times when the elephants went up t 46 hurs withut any sleep.
There has been sme thught that animals need sleep t stre memries prperly. But that can’t explain animals, like the elephants, which skip sleep fr a night withut needing catch-up rest later. “Elephants are usually nt cnsidered t be frgetful animals,” Manger bserves. A. Peple always think elephants are frgetful animals.
B. A gd night’s sleep benefits all the wildlife’s brains.
