She came alng, and with a few skillful waves f her hand, transfrmed them int a stunning buquet. When praised fr having this amazing ability, she shrugged ff the cmpliment. T ften we underestimate ur wn talents in this way. Maybe it’s because we’ve becme used t believing that nly abilities like a high I.Q., a gift fr mathematics r a large vcabulary have cgnitive (认知的) value. I was frtunate t learn therwise at a yung age.
When I entered high schl, a guidance cunselr tld my mther I wasn’t cllege material because I had perfrmed miserably n the spelling sectin f a standardized test. Thankfully my mther recgnized my ther intellectual (智力的) gifts and std up fr me, insisting I be put int the cllege-track curriculum. This experience literally defined the curse f my life. It shwed me hw imprtant it is nt t accept a label smene else put n me and it allwed me t realize my full ptential.
In the early 1980’s, Hward Gardner, a prminent Harvard researcher, pineered a cncept f “multiple intelligences”. In his bk, Frames f Mind: The Thery f Multiple Intelligences, he suggested that intelligence is nt limited t a traditinal interpretatin but instead includes a wide range f cgnitive abilities.
What I lve abut the multiple intelligences thery is that it allws yu t reframe yur wn abilities and talents, especially thse that dn’t necessarily fit int neat academic bxes. While it’s true ne must meet a basic level f intelligence fr achievement, the analytical skills measured by I.Q. d nt tell the whle stry. This is why we shuld celebrate all f ur talents and abilities. They’re part f what makes yur individual brain s wnderful and unique.

A. Change Yur Cgnitive Value.

I bserved ne child hugging her belved ty dg while reading a bk t her friend — bth she and her dg were actively turning the pages — and with every page turned, she lked dwn at her dg, lvingly. As a lngtime educatr f tddlers and a current PhD student studying transitinal phenmena and bject relatins, I have had the pleasure t witness the presence f transitinal bjects in the kindergarten.
The term transitinal bject, cined in 195l by D.W. Winnictt, refers t any material t which a child attaches a special value and by means f which the child is able t make the necessary shift frm the earliest ral relatinship with mther t genuine bject-relatinships. It is typically smething sft, such as a blanket r a sft ty, that is similar t the mther’s warm arms.
It may als be the subject f the child’s fantasies, fr example where a teddy bear is spken t, hugged, punished, etc. It thus becmes a tl fr practicing interactin with the external wrld. Mrever, the transitinal bject supprts the develpment f the self, as it is used t represent ‘nt me’. By lking at the bject, the child knws that it is nt the bject and hence smething individual and separate. in this way, it helps the child develp its sense f ‘ther’ things.
If the bject is denied in any way, attachment difficulties may arise later in life. The bject allws fr and invites emtinal well-being, and withut such an bject, true feelings may be hidden r dismissed as the child has n ther means t cpe with and cmprehend the wrld. Wrse still, the bject is intimately bund up with the identity f the child. Taking away the bject is als taking away smething f the child itself.
Winnictt nted that transitinal bjects cntinue thrugh the curse f ur lives, as “sacred mnuments” which pull us back t “a place and time f great cmfrt and memry”. The attachment t certain bjects like self phtgraphs defines bth memrials, and mre imprtantly a state f cnnectin and presence in the wrld.
28. Hw des the writer intrduce the tpic?
A. By sharing feelings.B. By illustrating a term.
C. By relating an experience.D. By prviding backgrund infrmatin.
29. What des the term “transitinal bjects” refer t accrding t the passage?
A. Tls used by educatrs t aid teaching.
B. Items t which a child becmes deeply attached.
C. Tys designed t amuse kids in the kindergarten.
D. Expensive persnal pssessins gifted by parents.
30. What might happen if a child’s transitinal bject is denied?
A. H might lse his imaginatin.
B. He may becme mre independent.
C. He is less likely t share persnal feelings.
D. He prbably distances himself frm his mther.
31. What is the main purpse f the text?
A. T intrduce hw t develp a sense f ‘ther’ things.
B. T d research n the psychlgical develpment f kids.
C. T shw hw t enhance the bnd between mther and child.
D. T stress the imprtance f transitinal bjects t children.

In a bid t reduce glbal electrnic waste, Fairphne has created a smartphne that wners can repair themselves. What makes its technlgy s sustainable?
“This is my phne’s camera,” says Bas van Abel, c-funder f the Fairphne, hlding a small, square cmpnent alft. He has just remved it frm his smartphne, using a tiny screwdriver.
“There are eight cmpnents in ttal which can be remved and replaced,” he says, as he carefully disassembles his entire smartphne, placing the camera alngside his phne battery, USB prt, screen and ludspeaker.
Funded in 2013 in Amsterdam, Fairphne makes Andrid smartphnes which can easily be exchanged, custmized and repaired by their wners. By enabling and encuraging peple t fix their phnes, rather than thrwing them away as sn as a cmpnent breaks, Fairphne hpes t help reduce electrnic waste.
In 2022, 5.3 billin mbile phnes were thrwn away, the Belgian nn-prfit The WEEE Frum, which analyses electrnic waste, estimates. In the US, peple replace their phnes every 18 mnths n average as new mdels with upgraded features are released. Fairphne wants t break this trend by selling phnes that have a lnger wrking life.
Despite its ambitin, Fairphne is still nly a minr player in the mbile phne market ——since launching, it has sld arund 550,000 devices. T put this int cntext, mre than 232 millin iPhnes were sld wrldwide in 2022. But van Abel says Fairphne is trying t prve that it is pssible fr cmpanies t turn a prfit selling sustainable smartphnes.
Sustainability, hwever, cmes with a high price tag. The latest Fairphne mdel csts £649. This is partly because Fairphne has t build everything in-huse, accrding t van Abel. “We d all the sftware updates urselves as there’s nt ne cmpany in the wrld that supprts lng-lasting phnes,” he says. “There’s a lt f investment needed fr us t be able t d what we want t.”
32. What d we knw abut van Abel?
A. He was quite skillful in repairing mbile phnes.
B. He created a smartphne that can repair itself.
C. He was satisfied with this sustainable smartphne.
D. He advcated recycling electrnic prducts.
33. Why did Americans always change their phnes?
A. Because the functins f the phnes needed t be upgraded.
B. Because ld phnes were nt envirnmentally friendly.
C. Because they didn’t like using secnd-hand phnes.
D. Because the data in the phnes shwed errrs.
34. What can we infer abut Fairphne?
A. Its varius prducts were deeply lved by cnsumers.
B. Its sales prfit was higher than that f iPhne.
C. It required financial and technical supprt.
D. It encuraged peple t purchase high-capacity smartphnes.
35. What can be cncluded frm Fairphne’s develpment?
A Everything’s hard in the beginning.
B. N pains, n gains.
C. Lve me, lve my dg.
D. Kill tw birds with ne stne.
