Halfway thrugh the first day, I realized I had never nticed exactly hw much that wrker did. Fr five days I either milked r slept, fed calves(牛犊)r slept. I have t admit this gave me a deep appreciatin f hw hard my parents wrked day in and day ut fr 30 years, and that understanding slidified my determinatin t d whatever it tk t nt stay n that dairy farm my whle life.
Eventually, my determinatin paid ff. I gt int cllege. Nw, I n lnger have t wrry abut my father’s vice yelling, “Stace, cme ut here! We need help!” T be hnest, I’m grateful. Nw, there are whle stretches f days when I dn’t feel any pressing need t even g utside. And I can g mnths withut petting an animal r watching in amazement at their keen sense f the envirnment arund them. Instead, I have neighbrs within shuting distance but wh feel like they live a planet away.
Eighteen years I lived my life n that dairy, nt really knwing there were peple wh didn’t get up and g ut and wrk tgether t get the same verwhelming tasks dne day after day. Smetimes I wish I had never fund ut there were.

Anyne wh’s used nise-canceling headphnes knws that hearing the right nise at the right time can be vital. Smene might want t remve sirens(汽笛)when wrking indrs, but nt when walking alng busy streets. Yet peple can’t chse what sunds their headphnes cancel.
Nw, a team led by researchers at the University f Washingtn(UW)has develped deep-learning algrithms(算法)that let users pick which sunds pass thrugh their headphnes in real time. The system, called “semantic hearing”, wrks with headphnes that stream the captured sunds t a cnnected smartphne which cancels all envirnmental sunds. Either thrugh vice cmmands r a smartphne app, headphne wearers can select which sunds they want t include frm 20 classes, such as sirens, baby cries, speech and bird chirps. Only the selected sunds will be played thrugh the headphnes.
“The challenge psed t tday’s nise-canceling headphnes is that the sunds headphne wearers hear need t sync(同步)with their visual senses. Yu can’t hear smene’s vice tw secnds after they talk t yu,” said senir authr Shyam Gllakta, a UW prfessr. “This means the algrithms must prcess sunds in under a hundredth f a secnd.”
That need fr speed is why the system must prcess sunds n a device such as a cnnected smartphne, instead f n clud servers. Additinally, because sunds frm different directins arrive in peple’s ears at different times, the system must preserve these delays and ther clues s peple can still meaningfully perceive sunds in their envirnment.
Tested in envirnments such as ffices, streets and parks, the system was able t capture sirens, bird chirps, alarms and ther target sunds, while remving all ther real-wrld nise. When 22 participants rated the system’s vice utput fr the target sund, they said that the quality imprved cmpared t the riginal recrding. In sme cases, the system struggled t distinguish between sunds that share many prperties, such as vcal music and human speech. The researchers nte that training the mdels n mre real-wrld data can imprve these utcmes. In the near future, the researchers plan t release a cmmercial versin f the system.
    28. What’s the innvative feature f the UW’s new hearing system?
    A. It can capture nise mre precisely.
    B. It is cnnected with efficient clud servers.
    C. It can custmize sunds fr users’ preferences.
    D. It lets wearers perceive the surrundings better.
    29. What is the disadvantage f tday’s nise-cancelıng headphnes?
    A. They can’t feel the directins f sunds.
    B. They can’t recgnize the target sunds.
    C. They lack relevant technical supprt.
    D. They lack real-time intelligence.
    30. What d the researchers expect f the new hearing system?
    A. It’ll cme nt the market sn.
    B. It’ll imprve the sund quality.
    C. It’ll capture sunds frm nature.
    D. It’ll be tested in nisier envirnments.
    31. What is the text mainly abut?
    A. An effective way t avid nise arund us.
    B. The develpment f deep-learning algrithms
    C. A new nise-canceling headphne technlgy.
    D. The applicatin f nise-canceling headphnes.

After a heavy snwstrm, I ran utside excitedly t build a snwman. N matter hw I rlled my snwball, it refused t grw. After resting fr a while, I restarted the jb. An adult playing by herself seems strange, but maybe it shuldn’t. New research suggests that mdern adults have ignred their play instinct(本能). Mst animals stp playing as adults. Hwever, there are a handful f animals that never stp.

T get the fd inside, they had t drp a rck int the cntainer. The mnkeys that previusly had drpped rcks fr fun were mre likely t slve the puzzle. This finding als suggests smewhere in ur evlutinary histry, a playful human invented stne tls. Even tday, the urge t play accunts fr sme f humanity’s greatest inventins. Adult play is als abut preparing fr the unexpected. And bilgists fund its mst imprtant functin is imprving relatinships and helping individuals get alng.
Adult play prmtes inclusivity, cperatin and creativity---all qualities that we humans culd use. Unfrtunately, scial nrms hld back ur urge t let lse. When studying the last remaining hunter-gatherer cmmunities, Peter Gray, a play researcher at Bstn University, nticed they were ften described as “jyful”. “This makes evlutinary sense,” Graysays. “Generally speaking, we like t d the things that are necessary fr ur survival.” Humans tk ne giant step away frm fun when started planting crps. Plwing fields is hard and bring. Then we invented factries and lst sight f play.
With threats like climate change, it’s easy t get int seriusness. But we shuld understand the value f encuraging adult play. The next time I’m caught playing, I knw what t say, “I’m playing fr the benefit f all humanity. Yu’re welcme.”
    32. Why did the authr feel embarrassed?
    A. She was laughed at while playing as an adult.
    B. She had a hard jb making a snwman.
    C. She cnsidered herself t ld t play.
    D. She was judged t behave imprperly.
    33. What can be inferred abut adult play frm paragraph 3?
    A. It can cntribute t useful discveries.
    B. It is particularly nticeable in animals.
    C. It is the natural need f humans.
    D. It prmtes human evlutin.
    34. Which f the fllwing gt humans t lse the pleasure f playing?
    A. Climate change. B. The arrival f agriculture.
    C. Mdern science. D. The need t lk fr fd.
    35. What is the best title fr the text?
    A. Let’s play t save ur wrld
    B. Play is enjyed nt just by animals
    C. Why adults need t make time fr play
    D. Hw adult play changed its rle fr humans
