I’ve been in an 18-year lve-hate relatinship with a black walnut tree.
It’s a unique tree. In late September r early Octber, falling fruits as hard as baseballs threaten the skulls(头骨) f yu, yur children, yur neighbrs and thse that reside next dr t them. Umbrellas in the yard are a must while dining in early August, and as fr me, I wear my bike helmet while wrking in the garden.
The black walnut als releases a chemical substance thrugh its rts as a cmpetitive strategy. It’s pisnus t several cmmn plants. There have been many new plant varieties that I brught hme with hpes that maybe the black walnut wuld accept them, but they failed t flurish.
What des wrk are native plants that naturally grw in the area. Native plants are imprtant t have arund since they prvide beneficial pllinatrs(传粉者) like birds, bees and butterflies with seeds and cntribute t a healthy and bidiverse envirnment. Native plants fr this area are generally easy t grw, s they experience less stress.
Have I thught f getting rid f this giant pain in my tiny backyard? Yes, hwever, getting rid f this tree standing at 50 feet with an 87-inch trunk is next t impssible. It’s als prtected under the law. Rightfully s. Trees are imprtant t the urban frest and fr all f thse that inhabit it.
Smetimes I think abut my life withut the black walnut. I can’t imagine a spring withut the birds wh arrive every year and ludly sing their sngs befre dawn. I’d miss falling asleep n lazy weekend afternns as I lk up int its leaves.
Every spring, I wnder what the seasn hlds: What are the chances f being kncked uncnscius while barbecuing? Like any gd relatinship, I’ll never be pleased. I’m stuck with this tree, s I’ll listen t its needs and give it the space it requires. In return, my walnut ffers a habitat fr wildlife and a reminder.
    24. Why des the authr wear a bike helmet while wrking in the garden?
    A. T prtect the injured skull.B. T prevent herself frm sunburn.
    C. T avid being hit by the nuts.D. T reduce the chance f getting bitten by bees.

A new study reveals that pigens(鸽子) can tackle sme prblems just like artificial intelligence, enabling them t slve difficult tasks that might challenge humans. Previus research has therized that pigens emply a prblem-slving strategy, invlving a trial-and- errr apprach, which is similar t the apprach used in AI mdels but differs frm humans’ reliance n selective attentin and rule use. T examine it, Brandn Turner, a psychlgy prfessr at the Ohi State University, and his clleagues cnducted the new study.
In the study, the pigens were presented with varius visual images, including lines f different widths and angles, and different types f rings. The pigens had t peck(啄) a buttn n the right r left t indicate the categry t which the image belnged. If they gt it crrect, they received fd; if they were wrng, they received nthing. Results shwed that, thrugh trial and errr, the pigens imprved their accuracy in categrizatin tasks, increasing their crrect chices frm abut 55% t 95%.
Researchers believed pigens used assciative learning, which is linking tw phenmena with each ther. Fr example, it is easy t understand the link between “water” and “wet”. “Assciative learning is frequently assumed t be far t primitive t explain cmplex visual categrizatin like what we saw the pigens d,” Turner said. But that’s exactly what the researchers fund.
The researchers’ AI mdel tackled the same tasks using just the tw simple mechanisms that pigens were assumed t use: assciative learning and errr crrectin. And, like the pigens, the AI mdel learned t make the right predictins t significantly increase the number f crrect answers. Fr humans, the challenge when given tasks like thse given t pigens is that they wuld try t cme up with rules that culd make the task easier. But in this case, there were n rules, which upsets humans.
What’s interesting, thugh, is that pigens use this methd f learning that is very similar t AI designed by humans, Turner said. “We celebrate hw smart we are that we designed artificial intelligence; at the same time, we regard pigens as nt clever animals,” he said.
    32. What is the purpse f the new study?
    A. T test a thery.B. T evaluate a mdel.
    C. T emply a strategy.D. T invlve an apprach.
    33. What were the pigens expected t d in the experiment?
    A. Draw circles. B. Crrect errrs.
    C. Cpy gestures. D. Identify images.
    34. What d pigens and AI have in cmmn accrding t the study?
    A. They are f equal intelligence.
    B. They are gd at making rules.
    C. They respnd rapidly t rders frm humans.
    D. They emply simple ways t get things dne.
    35. What is the passage mainly abut?
    A. Pigens’ trial-and-errr methd is revealed.
    B. Pigens utperfrm humans in tugh tasks.
    C. “Nt smart” pigens may be as smart as AI.
    D. AI mdels after pigens’ learning apprach.

Jkes and humr are ften thught f as unimprtant. If the lawyer defending yu in curt culdn’t stp jking, yu’d be understandably alarmed.
Hwever, regarding humur as insignificant is a mistake. Humur, jkes and laughter, have a vital rle t play in human behaviur and interactin. They are a pwerful part f scial bnding and are genuinely beneficial fr health via their stress-relieving prperties.
Why d we respnd, in such pwerful and rewarding ways, t things that bjectively make little sense? A substantial amunt f data has been generated regarding hw humur wrks in the brain and n the varius types f recgnizable jkes that trigger it.
Verbal puns(双关语), the mst familiar type f jke, invlve wrds that cnvey tw meanings at nce. Fr example, “Why did the glfer wear tw pairs f trusers? In case he gt a hle in ne.” Here “hle in ne” has tw pssible interpretatins. Their simplicity and familiarity mean mst peple recgnize the humur in puns. S, the brain’s humur prcesses are still engaged.
But where des humur arise frm in the brain? Cnsiderable research pints twards a specific system in the brain fr recgnizing humur. This system seemingly detects and reslves incngruity(不和谐). Our brains knw hw things, like language and behavirs, shuld wrk. But, in the real wrld, many things dn’t match ur expectatins. It seems ur brains have evlved a system t recgnize when this happens.
If nrmality is subverted, it means we dn’t knw what’s ging t happen, which creates cgnitive(认知的)tensin. Hwever, the system that recgnize incngruity seemingly als reslves it, by prviding an explanatin, r at least a cnfirmatin that the incngruity has n negative cnsequences. This remves the uncertainty, relieving the tensin. S, we experience a rewarding feeling. If the incngruity is nt reslved, hwever, humur is absent. If the answer t "Why did the glfer wear tw pairs f trusers?” is “in case the metal wl that lives in his gld bag attacks him”, that's nt funny. There’s unreslved incngruity.
Humur is essentially ur brain ging, “This isn’t hw things usually I’m kay with it!
32.What des the authr say abut humr in the first tw paragraphs?
    A. Its psitive rle is ften underrated.
    B. It mainly serves t entertain and amuse.
    C. Its harmful effects shuldn't be ignred.
    D. It is essential fr prfessinal cmmunicatin.
    33. Why des the authr mentin the “hle in ne” example in paragraph 4?
    A. T prve a thery.B. T draw a cnclusin.
    C. T illustrate a cncept.D. T make a cmparisn.
34.What des the underlined wrd “subverted” in paragraph 6 prbably mean?
    A. Detected. B. Overturned. C. Established.D. Repeated.
35.What is the best title fr the text?
    A. Hw Jkes Affect Brain Structures
    B. Using Humr t Bst Brain Pwer
    C. Jkes and the Brain’s Reward System
    D. Unlcking Brain Secrets Behind Humr

根据第三段“The black walnut als releases a chemical substance thrugh its rts as a cmpetitive strategy. It’s pisnus t several cmmn plants.
根据第四段“Native plants fr this area are generally easy t grw, s they experience less stress.
根据倒数第三段“Have I thught f getting rid f this giant pain in my tiny backyard? Yes, hwever, getting rid f this tree standing at 50 feet with an 87-inch trunk is next t impssible. 和最后一段“I’m stuck with this tree, s I’ll listen t its needs and give it the space it requires.

根据第二段“In the study, the pigens were presented with varius visual images, including lines f different widths and angles, and different types f rings. The pigens had t peck (啄) a buttn n the right r left t indicate the categry t which the image belnged.(在这项研究中,研究人员向鸽子展示了各种视觉图像,包括不同宽度和角度的线条,以及不同类型的环。
根据倒数第二段“The researchers’ AI mdel tackled the same tasks using just the tw simple mechanisms that pigens were assumed t use: assciative learning and errr crrectin.(研究人员的人工智能模型只使用了假设鸽子使用的两种简单机制:联想学习和纠错)可知,根据这项研究,鸽子和人工智能都采用简单的方法来完成任务。故选D项。
根据第一段“A new study reveals that pigens (鸽子) can tackle sme prblems just like artificial intelligence, enabling them t slve difficult tasks that might challenge humans.
36.根据上文“Have yu fund fcusing n yurself is at the bttm f the t-d list, because yu feel everyne else in yur life cmes first?(你是否发现关注自己被排在待办事项清单的最后,因为你觉得生活中的其他人都是第一位的?)”
This isn’t just abut identifying和G选项It’s abut understanding构成句法上的转折关系。
38.根据上文“There are many tls t help yu develp a deeper sense f yurself, including jurnaling and ther frms f creative expressin. Yu can use a guided jurnal t explre yur thughts and feelings r just free write whatever cmes t mind. It’s up t yu what yu want t d.(有很多工具可以帮助你发展更深层次的自我意识,包括日记和其他形式的创造性表达。
39.根据后文“Take nte f hw yu respnd t peple, what makes yu happy, and what makes yu unhappy. This can help yu identify patterns that are hlding yu back, such as feeling insecure r being easily angered. Once yu’ve identified these patterns, yu can wrk t change them.(注意你对别人的反应,什么让你快乐,什么让你不快乐。
40.根据上文“An ften verlked yet very imprtant factr in self-discvery is having healthy bundaries in yur persnal life.(自我发现的一个经常被忽视但非常重要的因素是在你的个人生活中有健康的界限)”以及后文“Clearly cmmunicating yur bundaries is als a way t shw thers that yu are in cntrl f yur wn behavir and can expect the same frm them. This is a sign f maturity and respect, tw characteristics that are key t having healthy relatinships.(清楚地表达你的界限也是一种向别人表明你能控制自己的行为,并期望他们也能做到这一点的方式。

have a grasp f “掌握……” 故填a。
故填have been recgnised。
be referred t as“被认为是”为固定短语。故填as。
