Jrg Muller, an eclgist at the University f Würzburg, with his clleagues, prpses a way t measure the bidiversity—listen t the jungle by AI, in a paper published in Nature Cmmunicatins.
The rainfrests are very imprtant and always alive with the sunds f animals, which is useful t eclgists. When it cmes t measuring the bidiversity f a piece f land, listening ut fr animal caller is mre effective than uncvering the bushes lking fr tracks and paw prints. The latter analysis methd is time-cnsuming, and it requires an expert pair f ears. Muller's idea was t apply the principle f smartphne apps which can identify the sunds f birds, bats and mammals t cnservatin wrk.
The researchers tk recrdings frm acrss 43 sites in the rainfrests. Sme sites were relatively primitive, ld-grwth frests. Others were areas that had just been cleared fr pasture(牧场) recently. And sme ther riginal frests had been cleared but then abandned, allwing themselves t regrw. The varius calls were identified by an expert, and then used t cnstruct a list f the species present. As expected, the lnger the land had been free frm agricultural activity, the greater bidiversity it hsted. Then it was the cmputer's turn. "We fund that the AI tls culd identify the sunds as well as the experts," says Dr. Muller.
Of curse, nt everything in a rainfrest makes a nise. Dr. Muller and his clleagues used light traps t catch night-flying insects, and DNA analysis t identify them. They fund that the diversity f nisy animals was a reliable representative fr the diversity f the quieter nes, t.
Besides measuring the bidiversity, the results are als expected t be applied t utside eclgy departments. Under pressure frm their custmers, firms like L'Oreal, a make-up cmpany, and Shell, an il firm, have been spending mney n frest restratin prjects arund the wrld. Dr. Muller hpes that an autmated apprach t checking n the results culd help mnitr such effrts, and give a standard way t measure whether they are wrking as well as their spnsrs say.
28. Why des Muller prpse t measure bidiversity with AI? A . T make a new cnservatin principle. B . T seek away fit fr ht envirnments. C . T wrk mre efficiently than manpwer D . T study the rainfrests mre specifically.
29. Hw was the identificatin wrk f AI tls n the 43 sites? A . It agreed with the wrk frm experts.. B . It identified different types f raintarests. C . It recrded mre sunds in the abandned frests. D . It was used t restre the bidiversity fr pasture.
30. What des the authr indicate in paragraph 4? A . DNA analysis is skeptical in the research. B . Quiet animals are as diverse as nisy nes. C . A rainfrest is always full f varius nises. D . AI technlgy is used t catch the insects.
31. What can be inferred frm the last paragraph? A . The research fcuses n bidiversity nly. B . L'Oreal and Shell develp mnitring apps. C . The research will assist in frest restratin. D . AI's help will attract sme spnsrs'investment.

Nwadays, the wrld is slwly becming a high-tech sciety and we are nw surrunded by technlgy. Facebk and Twitter are innvative tls; text messaging is still a smewhat existing phenmenn and even e-mail is nly a flashing spt n the screen when cmpared with ur lng histry f snail mail. Nw we adpt these tls t the pint f essentialness, and nly rarely cnsider hw we are mre fundamentally affected by them.
Scial media, texting and e-mail all make it much easier t cmmunicate, gather and pass infrmatin, but they als present sme dangers. By remving any real human engagement, they enable us t develp ur abnrmal self-lve withut the risk f disapprval r criticism. T use a theatrical metaphr (隐喻), these new frms f cmmunicatin prvide a stage n which we can each create ur wn characters, hidden behind a furth wall f tweets, status updates and texts. This unreal state f uncncern can becme addictive as we separate urselves a safe distance frm the cruelty f ur fleshly lives, where we are imperfect, pwerless and insignificant. In essence, we have been prvided nt nly the means t be mre free, but als t becme new, t create and prject a mre perfect self t the wrld. As we becme mre reliant n these tls, they becme mre a part f ur daily rutine, and s we becme mre restricted in this fantasy.
S it is that we live in a cld era, where names and faces represent tw different levels f clseness, where wrking relatinships ccur nly thrugh the magic f email and where lve can start r end by text message. An envirnment such as this reduces interpersnal relatinships t mere digital exchanges.
Wuld a celebrity have been s daring t d smething dishnrable if he had had t d it in persn? Dubtful. It seems he might have been lst in a fantasy wrld that ultimately cnvinced himself int believing the digital self culd bey different rules and regulatins, as if he culd cntinually push the limits f what's acceptable withut facing the cnsequences f "real life."
32. What can we knw abut new cmmunicatin tls? A . Destrying ur life ttally. B . Psing mre dangers than gd. C . Helping us t hide ur faults. D . Replacing traditinal letters.
33. What is the ptential threat caused by the nvel cmmunicatin tls? A . Sheltering us frm virtual life. B . Remving face-t-face interactin. C . Leading t false mental perceptin. D . Making us rely mre n hi-tech media.
34. What can be inferred frm the last tw paragraphs? A . Technlgies have changed ur relatinships. B . The digital wrld is a recipe fr pushing limits. C . Lve can be better cnveyed by text message. D . The digital self need nt take respnsibility.
35. Which f the fllwing is a suitable title fr the text? A . Addictin t the Virtual Wrld B . Cst f Falling int Digital Life C . Interpersnal Skills n the Net D . The Future f Scial Media

Giving generusly and receiving gratefully make it easier t live happily with thers. 36
Let me start with the idea f giving generusly._ 37 Fr example, my husband and I have family members wh nly cntact us when they need mney. We usually accept their requests, but we rarely receive a "thank yu". Mst peple wuld say that my husband and I are being used, and I suppse we are. But when we give, we shuldn't be giving fr the purpse f getting gratitude r praise. Rather, we shuld be giving because it is a gd thing.
The gd news is that when we lead ur life being nice t thers, ur life runs mre smthly. 38 But if yu practice being generus, mst f yur relatinships will imprve.
At the same time, we shuld remember t receive gratefully. I truly believe that yu cant say "thank yu" enugh when yu receive.
39 Parents can feel unappreciated by their children, and teachers can feel unappreciated by their students. D yu think it unnecessary t thank them when receiving just because a task is part f smene's jb descriptin? That's wrng!
40 It is gd fr us t say "thank yu" because we regularly need t remind urselves hw lucky we are. And hearing thse tw wrds can make us feel great fr days.
If yu are lking fr a way t imprve yur life, I can give yu ne: Give generusly and receive gratefully.

As a writer, I miss rejectin slips. Nt that I enjyed receiving thse pre-printed slips f paper, but at least when I gt ne, I was pretty sure that a flesh-and-bld 41 had put it in the envelpe. And there was always the chance I might see a handwritten sentence n the bttm, 42 the piece almst made it. When an editr at McCall's wrte, "I'm afraid I have t say n n this 43 piece, but try me again n anther, wuld yu?" It was almst as 44 t me as if she had said, "We'll 45 it and here is an advance fr yu".
Nwadays, rejectin slips seem t have disappeared with the use f nline submissins. Mst editrs dn't feel it a must t 46 they have received, read, r cnsidered yur wrk because they receive s many 47 each day.
Fr me, there are three 48 f rejectin slip pain. The first is 49 brught n by finding a flat "n" n a 50 piece f paper, then fllwed by anger (hw culd they 51 a piece that is bviusly s much 52 than mst f the stuff they print), and, finally, rebirth: I will live t 53 a new piece anther day.
Learning t 54 rejectin seems like part f grwing up as a writer. Despite the many letters f acceptance I have received, my flder f "Ntewrthy Rejectin Slips" is far 55 than that f "Ntewrthy Acceptances", which indicates t me the fact: I still have sme grwing up t d.
