It was dangerus enugh that the entrance was blcked by a lcked metal dr t keep the casual cavers ut. Abut a mile lng and 338 feet deep, Cascade was full f tums and barely passable tight squeezes.
    Jasn was new amng the grup, with the least experience and, at 43, lder by a decade r mre. It was his friend Andrew Munz, 33, wh intrduced him t the sprt. Unlike Jasn, Andrew was an expert caver-a frmer caving guide, actually.
    They hiked a bit befre cming t the dr, which sat in the grund—yu’d miss it if yu weren’t lking fr it.     Eyes fixed in the hrizn in expectatin f anther pheasant(野鸡) taking flight, Richard stepped n a thin crust(层) f snw n a canal. It cllapsed and drpped him.
    Realizing that he was in truble and was ging t hurt himself, Richard was suddenly picking up a lt f speed. His left leg hit first, and he lay n his side t reach fr his shtgun, unladed it and used it as a walking stick. When he was partly up, he slipped and slid back dwn, because ne f his feet gt stuck between tw rcks. Richard tld himself that if he didn’t get himself ut f the canal, he wasn’t ging t have a very gd night.
    Richard walked his ft free and climbed mre slwly and cautiusly ut f the canal. Richard immediately realized the difficulty f the task befre him. The accident ccurred at abut 2 p.m., and it was nearly 5 p.m. with the rad far away and the sun setting.
    Richard fcused n crawling(爬) t safety. Even with his gun’s supprt, hpping(单脚跳) was impractical. Instead, he sat dwn and pushed himself backward less than 40 inches at a time with his gd leg. He was stubbrn and sure that he must hld n. Temperatures drpped belw zer vernight, and his glves and bts gt wet. His hands and feet sn were cmpletely numb.
