The Wrld Health Organizatin (WHO) says peple arund the wrld are eating mre sugar. As a result, health prblems related t weight gain and tth damage are increasing. Sugary fds and drinks als weaken the bne.
The WHO finds that, n average, the amunt f sugar in the fds we eat has risen abut 10 percent ver the past 10 years. But it has risen at a faster rate in sme areas.
In the Middle East and Nrth Africa, sugar intake (摄入) has risen abut 15 percent ver the past 10 years. In sme Asian and Pacific cuntries, sugar intake is 20 percent higher. And in Suth America, peple eat mre sugar than anywhere else in the wrld.
Francesc Branca is directr f the WHO's Department f Nutritin fr Health. He said, “In Suth America, it is abut 130 grams per persn, per day, s much mre than twice the WHO's recmmendatins, but we als have sme parts f the wrld where the intake is still lw, such as in Equatrial and Suthern Africa, where it is abut 30 grams per persn, per day.”
Mr. Branca says reducing the sugar intake can be difficult because s many cks and fdmakers add sugar. He says researchers fund that 80 percent f the fd items in the US markets included sme kind f sugar.
The WHO is calling n gvernments t take measures t reduce the sugar intake. It advises taxing (对……征税) prducts with a lt f sugar and requiring fdmakers t list hw much sugar is added t their prducts. Anther advice is t restrict (约束) marketing f sugary fds and drinks t children.
Hwever, the WHO says it is fine t eat fds that naturally have sugar, such as fresh fruits, vegetables and even milk.
