Omar Vazquez grew up in pverty n Mexic’s Yucatan peninsula. He watched his single mther struggle t put fd n the table, and tday the
memry inspires him t help thse in need. When an invasive (入侵的) seaweed called sargassum shwed up n Mexic’s Caribbean beaches, Omar
lked past the matter f it all and saw an pprtunity t help thers.
Sargassum is nt dangerus, but it has an unpleasant smell and can becme s thick that it keeps peple frm entering the water. Mexic has
experienced recrd-setting amunts f the seaweed in recent years, and it has made its way t Flrida’s beaches as well. Experts say there culd be as
much as 100 tns f sargassum blcking Mexican shrelines in 2023.
With turism dllars at risk, fficials and lcals alike were eager t remve the seaweed, but nly Omar saw its true ptential. The prfessinal
gardener rganized a beach cleanup that prvided jbs fr abut 300 lcal families, but he knew there was mre t d. Since peple’s attitude twards
the seaweed reminded him f his wn life experiences, he decided t becme an agent (推动者) fr change.
When sargassum started arriving, everyne was cmplaining. “I wanted t make smething gd ut f smething everyne saw as bad,” Omar
explained.
In 2018, Omar fund a way t turn sargassum int building blcks that he calls Sargablck. He creates these blcks by mixing 40% sargassum with
ther materials like clay, then putting them in a blck-frming machine and baking them in the sun fr days. The end result is an rganic, sustainable,
and eclgically friendly building material that experts say culd last fr 120 years.
T date, Omar’s cmpany, Bluegreen Mexic, has used 700 tns f sargassum t build lw-incme husing fr thse in need. Omar said he wuld
take n mre prjects, and dnate mre huses t single mthers like his wn mm.

When yu enjy yur mrning cup f tea, yu are prbably nt aware that thse tea leaves can mean injury, r even death, fr Asian elephants
wandering Indian tea gardens.
In the Indian state f Assam, grwing numbers f tea farms are destrying the Asian elephant’s habitats and endangering their ppulatin. Much f
the frest land where tea is grwn in Assam is flat and thus farmers must dig drainage trenches r small channels t prevent water frm accumulating
and hurting the plants. The trenches, hwever, can be death traps fr the elephants.
Since the elephants need t use tea plantatins as landmarks when traveling in frests, they almst unavidably have t mve thrugh the farms.
Mrever, because there are fewer humans arund, pregnant females ften use tea-grwing areas as safe shelters t give birth. But baby elephants, still
nt used t rugh grund may easily fall int the trenches and get hurt. Once injured, they might nt be able t climb ut. When mthers try t dig their
babies ut, bth may be trapped in thick mud, even be killed. Furthermre, elephants are knwn t resist leaving their sick r dying behind, and a grup
may stay at a trench with a trapped baby fr hurs, unwilling t mve n until all hpe is lst.
Is there pssibility fr elephants t live in harmny with the bming tea business? Elephant Friendly Tea is an rganizatin that takes the initiative
t make it pssible. The rganizatin encurages cnsumers t chse brands that take an active part in elephants prtectin, and has established a
certificatin prgram t reward tea grwers wh are ding it right. Until nw, nly smaller tea brands have been certified, but awareness is grwing. The
rganizatin believes that peple may be encuraged t buy elephant-friendly brands when they knw mre abut the risk tea can cause t these
endangered animals.
【小题1】Why d farmers in Assam dig trenches?

【小题3】What des “it” underlined in the last paragraph refer t?
A.Encuraging cnsumers t chse high-quality brands.
B.Rewarding tea grwers fr prtecting the envirnment.
C.Prmting elephant-friendly trenches and rganizatins.
D.Creating a win-win situatin fr elephants and tea farms.
【小题4】Which is the mst suitable title fr the text?
A.The Trenches Pse Threats t Elephants
B.Habitat Lss Affects Endangered Animals
C.Grwth f Tea Gardens Benefits Plantatin
D.Farms Spnsr Envirnmental Organizatins
Farming is destrying the planet, but there culd be a much mre envirnmentally friendly way t feed urselves: using renewable energy t turn
carbn dixide int fd. “This is becming a reality,” says Pasi Vainikka at Slar Fds, a cmpany that is building the first cmmercial-scale factry
that will be able t make fd directly frm CO2.
There can be n dubt that immediate attentin t find greener ways t grw fd is required. Cnventinal agriculture, including rganic farming,
causes damage t the envirnment in many ways. It requires a lt f land, leading t habitat lss and defrestatin. It is als the surce f a third f all
greenhuse gas emissins and releases ther pllutants. It isn’t very efficient, either. Crps typically transfrm less than 1 percent f light energy int
usable bimass (生物量).
Instead, Slar Fds plans t avid phtsynthesis (光合作用) altgether, and grw bacteria that use hydrgen as their surce f energy. At the
factry, renewable electricity will be used t split water t prduce hydrgen and xygen. The hydrgen will be added t large cntainers, where the
bacteria grw, alng with CO2 and ammnia (氨气). The end result will be a yellw pwder called Slein.
Slein is made f bacterial cells and is up t 70 percent prtein. It can be used as an ingredient in all kinds f fds. “We are aiming at replacing
animal-surced prteins, which we think have the highest envirnmental impact,” says Vainikka.
Cmpared with plant crps, Slein will use 100 times less water per kilgram f prtein prduced, 20 times less land and emit a fifth as much CO2,
accrding t Slar Fds. There are ther benefits, t: factries culd be situated anywhere in the wrld and prductin wn’t be affected by weather
cnditins.
“With Slar Fds and ther cmpanies scaling up their systems, this is truly beginning a new era f agriculture,” says Drian Leger at
Cnnectmix Bi in Germany. “I think these trends are exciting and will help bend the carbn curve as well as lead t imprved glbal fd supply
security.”
【小题1】What is the authr’s purpse in mentining cnventinal agriculture in paragraph 2?
A.T demnstrate its influence n crps.
B.T cmpare different farming methds.
C.T highlight the urgent need fr alternatives.

A.it is prtein-rich
B.its prductin is weather sensitive
D.its prductin is lcatin-independent
C.it is resurce-efficient
【小题4】Which statement wuld Drian Leger prbably agree with?
A.The use f Slein may help reduce carbn emissins.
B.Slein will dminate the agricultural develpment.
C.Slein can help achieve glbal fd safety.
D.The prspect f Slein remains t be seen.
There has been a very serius decline in the numbers f shallw-water fish as a result f verfishing. Peple still want t eat fish, s the fishing
industry must lk at ther surces, especially the deep waters f the Atlantic. 【小题1】
Cnservatin measures will have t be put in place if these deep-sea fish are t survive. Research n five such species shws that numbers have
declined by between 87 percent and 98 percent.
【小题2】
Many species culd well disappear cmpletely if the present trend cntinues. These
are species that have been swimming in ur ceans fr hundreds f millins f years.
The prblem is emphasized by the fact that the decline in numbers happened in less than twenty years. Deep-sea fish take a lng time t reprduce
and nrmally live fr many years.
【小题3】
The average size f such fish als declined, with ne species shwing a 57 percent decline in average
size. This is f particular cncern, as large fish tend t prduce mre ffspring than small nes.
【小题4】
The deep-sea species have been caught as if they were the fast-breeding (快速繁殖) fish like sardine and herring. It is like killing
elephants as if they reprduced at the same rate as rabbits.
The damage dne by verfishing ges beynd the sea envirnment. Millins f peple make a living in the fishing industry.
Measures must be taken t nt nly cnserve ecsystems, but als sustain livelihds and ensure fd security.
A.Billins f peple rely n fish fr prtein.
【小题5】
B.Many peple nw chse nt t eat deep-sea fish.
C.Unfrtunately, their reprductin rate is very lw.
D.This puts them in the categry f “critically endangered”.
E.Nne f these facts has been taken int accunt by the fishing industry.
F.Overfishing is a majr cause f decline in ppulatins f cean wildlife.
G.This has resulted in a sharp decline in the numbers f many f the species caught.
