一、阅读理解
A traditinal Chinese medicine has been shwn t be effective at reducing cmplicatins fllwing a heart attack after a large-scale, clinical trial. The
medicine, knwn as tngxinlu, is made f extracts derived frm seven herbs and varius animals. The cmpund, whse name means “t pen the
netwrk f the heart,” has lng been used as a traditinal Chinese treatment fr patients wh have had heart attacks and/r strkes (中风).Based n
prmising results in cellular (细胞的) and animal mdels, the State Fd and Drug Administratin f China apprved its use fr the treatment f strke
and angina pectris—a heart cnditin characterized by reccurring chest pain-in 1996.
The latest study, which has been published in JAMA, represents ne f the first times that a traditinal Chinese medicine has been tested in a large-
scale, Western-style clinical trial.
The authrs f the study, wh include researchers frm several Chinese universities and hspitals, in cllabratin with experts frm the University f
Texas Suthwestern Medical Center-fund that tngxinlu reduced the risk f heart attacks (knwn as mycardial infarctins), deaths and ther majr
cardivascular cmplicatins fr at least a year after a first heart attack.
Matthew Sayblt, a cardilgist with the Hackensack Meridian Jersey Shre University Medical Center wh was nt invlved in the latest study, tld
Newsweek that he fund the latest research “cmpelling” after reviewing the paper. “I am nt aware f any ther large, well-run trials like this
studying traditinal Chinese medicine. This is a rarely run type f study, and I cngratulate the authrs fr their wrk and publicatin in such a
prestigius medical jurnal,” Sayblt said. The study invlved 3,777 patients at 124 clinical centers in China wh had suffered the mst severe frm f
heart attack-knwn as ST-segment elevatin mycardial infarctin, r STEMI.
Sayblt said he als bserved sme weaknesses in the way the study was cnducted, ne f which was that the participants were entirely Chinese
citizens and predminantly male. “Thus the findings may nt be generalizable thrughut the wrld r t wmen,” he said. “Furthermre, the
patients were less frequently-cmpared t the United States, fr example-treated with traditinal prven medicine after their mycardial infarctins.
Therefre, the effect f the Chinese medicine may have been enlarged, by the lack f patient expsure t prven therapies.
Further research will be needed t address these matters, and the benefits shwn in this study wuld need t be cpied in ther ppulatins befre
the treatment culd get apprved by the U. S. Fd and Drug Administratin.

The lights g dwn, music plays, and a yung wman n a bike at the frnt f the class encurages students t spin faster and harder. When the
lights g back n, the students n the bikes pullut their ntebks, and it’s clear that this is nt Sul Cycle. Instead, it’s a first-f-its-kind business
schl curse at Frdham University that is taught n spin bikes in a university.
“It’s the first class that I mentin t anybdy when anybdy asks me what classes I’m taking,” said Amanda Vpat, 22, a business administratin
majr. “I think peple are really excited abut it.”
The 75-minute, twice-weekly curse is the brainchild f Jul it a Haber, a business schl prfessr at Frdham. “I have been intrducing mvement
and fitness in my classes fr the past seven years,” she said. “I fund the spin class wuld really allw students t exercise while a prfessr lectures at
the same time.”
The curse the students are taking while cycling is n jke. Managing Prfessinal Relatinships is an upper-level business schl curse taken
primarily by junirs and senirs. The students are fully instrumental in each class, selecting the music, leading stretches befre and after class and leading
the intervals during the class.
Haber stps her lecture every 20 minutes thrughut the class. While ne student turns ff the lights, anther student turns up the music and a third
student ges t a bike in the frnt f the class t lead their classmates in high-intensity interval that lasts tw t three minutes, just enugh t re-
energize the students.
“It’s a fantastic way f engaging students and as a prfessr, as a teacher, that’s really gratifying.” she said. “They dn’t have their
smartphnes, and they dn’t have laptps s they are physically engaged and als mentally engaged in what is being said.”
The curse is the first f its kind at Frdham, and Haber believes it is als a first acrss the United States. She has authred research n the unique
classrm apprach, which she calls fitness integrated learning.
Dnna Rapaccili, the head f Frdham’s Gabelli Schl f Business, described hw students were “energized” by the class and said Frdham
was pen t expanding it t ther curses. “Definitely,” Rapaccili answered when asked if Haber’s curse represents the future f learning.

Peple have wndered fr a lng time hw their persnalities and behavirs are frmed. It’s nt easy t explain why ne persn is intelligent and
anther is nt, r why ne is cperative and anther is cmpetitive.
Scial scientists are, f curse, extremely interested in these types f questins. They want t explain why we pssess certain characteristics and
exhibit certain behavirs. There are n clear answers yet, but tw distinct schls f thught n the matter have develped. As ne might expect, the
tw appraches are very different frm ne anther, and there is a great deal f debate between prpnents(倡导者) f each thery. The cntrversy is
ften cnveniently referred t as “nature/nurture”.
Thse wh supprt the “nature” side f the cnflict believe that ur persnalities and behavir patterns are largely determined by bilgical and
genetic factrs. That ur envirnment has little, if anything t d with ur abilities, characteristics, and behavir is central t this thery. Taken t an
extreme, this thery maintains that ur behavir is predetermined t such a great degree that we are almst cmpletely gverned by ur instincts.
Prpnents f the “nurture” thery, r, as they are ften called, behavirists, claim that ur envirnment is mre imprtant than ur bilgically
based instincts in determining hw we will act. A behavirist, B.E. Skinner, sees humans as beings whse behavir is almst cmpletely shaped by their
surrundings. The behavirists’ view f the human being is quite mechanistic; they maintain that, like machines, humans respnd t envirnmental
stimuli as the basis f their behavir.
The scial and plitical implicatins f these tw theries are prfund. In the United States, fr example, blacks ften scre belw whites n
standardized intelligence tests. This leads sme “nature” prpnents t cnclude that blacks are genetically inferir t whites. Behavirists, in cntrast,
say that the differences in scres are due t the fact that blacks are ften deprived f many f the educatinal and ther envirnmental advantages that
whites enjy, and that, as a result, they d nt develp the same respnses that whites d.
Neither f these theries can yet fully explain human behavir. In fact, it is quite likely that the key t ur behavir lies smewhere between these
tw extremes. That the cntrversy will cntinue fr a lng time is certain.
【小题1】What will the prpnents f the “nurture” thery agree with?
A.Peter lves talking t strangers because he is friendly.

B.He tried t prve that bth theries need further discussin and research.
C.He intended t demnstrate why the blacks need mre educatin and supprt.
D.He attempted t intrduce the result f intelligence tests frm blacks and whites.
【小题4】What is the authr’s purpse in writing the text?
A.T intrduce sme theries.
C.T slve a racial prblem.
B.T explain a scial issue.
D.T give further suggestins.

The summer finally came. That afternn, the ht sun was shining brightly, making the tree leaves almst burn and making peple’s bdies seem

“That’s hrrible!” I shuted 1udly, and while I was cmplaining, I suddenly realized that I culdn’t swim in the first place, s why shuld I be
