One Sunday, we arrived hme frm a wedding t find ur neighbrs siting amng a pile f buckets, bt les, and anything they culd fill water in.

fr weeks and mnths n end.
Thankfully, my dad’s planning ahead blessed ur hme with a precius brehle(钻井) that prvides us with freshwater every day. Smetimes,
because we are ff the grid(网格), we are nt even aware f what is happening arund us, especially with the lack f water-until we see peple queuing
up, waiting fr the water trucks the gvernment sends. Often, the trucks are late r run ut f water befre reaching ur street.
In the spirit f Ubuntu, a Zulu(祖鲁语) term meaning humanity that als translates t: “I am because we are”, we encuraged the neighbrs t
cllect their water frm ur brehle. We pened the gate and cnnected the pipe. Very quickly, the wrd spread, and ld and yung gathered with
varius-sized cntainers t cllect this life-giving liquid. There was much laughter and chatter, alng with sme singing as bucket after bucket was filled.
It was heartwarming t watch the yung help the elderly carry their water hme befre returning fr their wn bucket. And as lng as ur family’s
brehle is wrking, we practice Ubuntu.
“It is nt safe t let strangers n t yur prperty,” sme say. But humanity drives us t take the risk because the burden is lessened when shared.

One f the mst cmmn questins I get frm cncerned gardeners is hw t deal with climbing plants, like ivy. The thinking behind this is that
climbers are a dragn brickwrk and can cause structural damage t buildings. But when yu actually lk at the science, very few f these f cars are
    based n any evidence.
A 2020 study f a range f climbing plants n mdel brick buildings fund that the shade cast by the plants’ leaves cled the surface f the
buildings in the summer by as much as 5.7℃, reducing the wide swings between day and night temperatures-a key driver f surface structural damage. It
als lwered summer temperatures inside the buildings by up t 7.2℃, and was even prjected t reduce heating bills by as much as 20 percent in the
winter. Despite cncerns that plant strap misture (水分) against brickwrk, leading t damp issues, the same trial shwed ivy didn’t significantly raise
misture levels-rather, it helped stabilise them, minimising changes that culd damage the buildings surfaces
It is wrth bearing in mind that these results were frm mdel buildings with new brickwrk. What abut well-used buildings? Well anther study,
this ne frm 2011, fund that in five histrical buildings, bare walls experienced average maximum temperatures 36 percent higher and minimum
temperatures 15 percent lwer cmpared with thse cated in leaves.
The researchers cncluded that the living prtectin prvided by thse climbing plants wuld “reduce the likelihd f frst and salt damage t the
building materials, thus cntributing t their cnservatin”. They als fund that the leaves’ ability t trap pllutin culd reduce the damage t
    histrical walls.
Imagine if there was a new material that culd cl cities and cut energy bills, all while lking beautiful. Did I mentin it was als self-cleaning and
carbn negative? The truth is that we have had this amazing material all alng, but rather than appreciating it we have spent huge amunts f time
wrrying abut bw t tear it dwn.
【小题1】What are gardeners cmmnly cncerned abut?
    A.Pr quality f brickwrk.

As scial creatures, research has histncally pinted us away frm time alne. But recently, mre peple are spending time away frm the crwd, and
even seem t desire it. In Slitude(独处). The science and pwer f being alne, a bk c-written by Heather Hansen, an award-winning jurnalist and
authr, with the researcher Thuy-vy Nguyen, they set ut t understand hw everyday slitude affects peple’s lives.

In the largest study f its kind, thusands aged between 13 and 85 participated in nline surveys. Fr sme, think f the wrd “slitude”, and they
will think f a determined hiker alne in the wilderness. Mst peple described experiences f slitude achieved while, fr example, walking in a park r
writing in a jurnal. Surprisingly, sme described slitude as having a psychlgical distance frm thers, but nt necessarily a physical ne.
In several separate experiments, Nguyen fund that when peple spend 15 minutes alne, there is a “deactivatin effect”, meaning “high
excitement” emtins like anxiety are decreased, while psitive “lw excitement” feelings like calmness are increased, which wasn’t seen when
peple spent 15 minutes with anther persn. One caveat is that smetimes slitude als increases the negative lw excitement feeling f lneliness.
Hwever, a further experiment shwed that this increase culd be weakened when individuals chse t think abut psitive thughts r when they were
given a chice whether t spend time alne.
The list desn’t end there, thugh. Several studies link time alne and creativity, but nly when peple avid scial interactins because f what is
knwn as a “nn-fearful” preference fr slitude. On the ther hand, there is n such link in thse whse fear r anxiety prevents them frm
interacting with thers, r because f avidance, where peple disliked scial interactins.
Nw think abut the next time yu will be n yur wn. Will yu enjy r suffer it? As evidence increases fr hw time alne can be a psitive frce
in shaping ur lives, Hansen and her clleagues recmmend planning fr it-and prtecting it.
【小题1】What is the survey in paragraph 2 mainly abut?
