As a by, I wanted t g t the Suth Ple. As a teenager, I decided I’d like t g t the Nrth Ple t. And yet, I haven’t dne either. It had taken me 31 years t just make it t the Arctic.
I was traveling with a film crew frm Nrthern Ireland, fllwing the ftsteps f Lrd Dufferin wh, in the 1850s, sailed frm Sctland t the Arctic. As an early adventure turist, he was driven by the desire t see what lay at the ends f the wrld.
As we sailed nrth, icebergs f the size f buses flated past ur small bat. Finally, we reached ur destinatin — English Bay, where Dufferin landed — and stepped ff nt the hrseshe-shaped beach.
This was what I’d dreamt f: standing smewhere s pure and primitive. Hwever, fr many early plar explrers, the results were far less pleasant. The suth, in particular, was surce f extreme danger.
My childhd interest in the Suth Ple was fueled by the unsuccessful yet heric adventures f Ernest Shackletn. He died in 1922 while preparing fr his furth adventure. The stries f Rbert Falcn Sctt are als well-knwn: he and fur cmpanins died n their way back frm the Suth Ple.
S why d explrers put themselves at such risk?
Much f it seems t lie in the purity f the challenge. Sctt talked f the appeal f a place that had been “unreached and unseen by humans.” “With a view ver shining lands cvered by ice-sheets f incnceivable extent, yu have the feeling f living ver the cntrl f death,” said Fridtjf Nansen, a Nrwegian explrer.
On the hmeward jurney the weather turned, and we were left fr a few days at the mercy f a strm. We experienced a small taste f helplessness when faced with the raw pwer f nature. We shuld be grateful fr the great explrers’ spirit and stries. I knw I am.
24. Why did the authr begin his adventure tur?
A. T assist a film crew. B. T realize a childhd dream.
C. T memrize Lrd Dufferin. D. T challenge a wrld recrd.
25. Which f the fllwing best explains the underlined wrd “incnceivable” in paragraph 7?
A. Hard t cntrl. B. T far t reach.
C. Hard t imagine. D. T bright t view.
26. What happened during the writer’s jurney?
A. They were trapped in icebergs. B. They were kept ff the destinatin.
C. They were attacked by a strm. D. They were rescued by explrers.
27. Which f the fllwing is the best title fr the text?
A. The Appeal f the Ends f the Wrld B. The Dream f Traveling t the Arctic
C. The Victry ver the Cntrl f Death D. The Gratitude t Great Explrers’ Spirit

Evlutin can perfrm extrardinary makevers: tday’s airbrne sngbirds evlved frm the wingless, earthbund dinsaurs that wandered millins f years ag. But sme rganisms seem t be unchanged — in ther wrds, escape natural selectin. The celacanth, a mdern-day fish, is nearly identical t its 410-millin-year-ld fssils.
Scientists have lng wndered hw these species d s. It has been assumed that natural selectin keeps sme species unchanged by selecting fr mderate r average qualities (stabilizing selectin) rather than selecting fr mre extreme qualities that wuld cause a species t change (directinal selectin).
But a study published in the Natinal Academy f Sciences USA cntradicts this idea, shwing that evlutin cnstantly favrs different qualities in seemingly unchanging animals t imprve shrt-term survival. In the lng term, thugh, “all that evlutin cancels ut and leads t n change,” says the study’s lead authr, James Strud.
Strud and his clleagues studied fur lizard species, all relatively unchanged fr 20 millin years. The researchers caught members f these ppulatins every six mnths fr three years. They measured each lizard’s head size, leg length, mass and height, as well as the size f its sticky tes, nting which individuals survived. Strud expected t bserve stabilizing selectin at wrk preserving mderate qualities. Instead he saw clearer evidence f directinal selectin: sme lizards with unique characteristics, such as stickier tes, survived better.
The study ffers “a gd explanatin fr why we see what we think is stabilizing selectin,” says Tadashi Fukami, an eclgist studying evlutin at Stanfrd University. Many new qualities are evlving in the shrt term, but they dn’t prvide a crucial advantage ver the lng term. In ther wrds, species staying unchanged may simply have fund the best pssible cmbinatin f qualities fr lasting success in their envirnment. S what happens when the lizards’ envirnment changes mre dramatically? T help answer this bigger questin, Strud is still making trips t visit the lizards.
28. Why des the authr mentin the “celacanth fish” in paragraph 1?
A. T add evidence t natural selectin.
B. T demnstrate the pwer f evlutin.
C. T give an example f unchanged species.
D. T prve species’ extrardinary makevers.
29. What’s the fcus f paragraph 2?
A. A cmmn belief. B. Unslved mysteries.
C. A sharp cntrast. D. Unique characteristics.
30. Hw did Strud cnduct his research?
A. By analyzing lizard fssils. B. By tracking research bjects.
C. By illustrating stabilizing selectin. D. By categrizing qualities f lizards.
31. What will Strud prbably d in the future?
A. Make trips t visit lizard experts. B. Summarize average features f lizards.
C. Reveal the best cmbinatins f qualities. D. Examine lizards under extreme cnditins.
D
On March 7, 1907, the English statistician Francis Galtn published a paper which illustrated what has cme t be knwn as the “wisdm f crwds” effect. The experiment f estimatin he cnducted shwed that in sme cases, the average f a large number f independent estimates culd be quite accurate.
This effect capitalizes n the fact that when peple make errrs, thse errrs aren’t always the same. Sme peple will tend t verestimate, and sme t underestimate. When enugh f these errrs are averaged tgether, they cancel each ther ut, resulting in a mre accurate estimate. If peple are similar and tend t make the same errrs, then their errrs wn’t cancel each ther ut. In mre technical terms, the wisdm f crwds requires that peple’s estimates be independent. If fr whatever reasn, peple’s errrs becme crrelated r dependent, the accuracy f the estimate will g dwn.
But a new study led by Jaquin Navajas ffered an interesting twist n this classic phenmenn. The key finding f the study was that when crwds were further divided int smaller grups that were allwed t have a discussin, the average frm these grups were mre accurate than thse frm an equal number f independent individuals. Fr instance, the average btained frm the estimates f fur discussin grups f five was significantly mre accurate than the average btained frm 20 independent individuals.
In a fllw-up study with 100 university students, the researchers tried t get a better sense f what the grup members actually did in their discussin. Did they tend t g with thse mst cnfident abut their estimates? Did they fllw thse least willing t change their minds? This happened sme f the time, but it wasn’t the dminant respnse. Mst frequently, the grups reprted that they “shared arguments and reasned tgether.” Smehw, these arguments and reasning resulted in a glbal reductin in errr. Althugh the studies led by Navajas have limitatins and many questins remain, the ptential implicatins fr grup discussin and decisin-making are enrmus.
32. What is paragraph 2 f the text mainly abut?
A. The methds f estimatin. B. The causes f peple’s errrs.
C. The design f Galtn’s experiment. D. The underlying lgic f the effect.
33. Navajas’ study fund that the average accuracy culd increase even if _______.
A. individuals did nt cmmunicate
B. the crwds were relatively small
C. estimates were nt fully independent
D. there were ccasinal underestimates
34. What did the fllw-up study fcus n?
A. The size f the grups. B. The discussin prcess.
C. The dminant members. D. The individual estimates.
35. What is the authr’s attitude tward Navajas’ studies?
A. Unclear. B. Cautius. C. Dubtful. D. Apprving.
