Hummingbirds are small birds but they’re the Olympic gymnasts f the flying wrld. They have strngly muscled bdies and rather lng wings. They fly arund at remarkable speeds and fly in all directins, including backward and upside dwn.
T achieve such agility (敏捷), hummingbirds use distinct mdes f visual prcessing t cntrl different types f flight. Their brains can make rapid transitins frm visual signals t mtr utputs. They take in lts f cmplicated visual infrmatin and make a flight plan ut f that. Recently, the researchers have uncvered a unique mde that guides hummingbirds’ speed when they are flying frward.
The findings cme frm an experiment f mre than 3,500 hummingbird flights inside a 12-ft-lng tunnel (通道) with a branch at ne end and a feeder at the ther. Mving light patterns cast n the tunnel walls influence hw the hummingbirds see things while flying.
The researchers expected that if the hummingbirds were using visual clues t cntrl their frward flight speed, they wuld see the birds speed r slw with lights cast n the side walls. But instead, it seemed that they had their wn way f knwing hw fast t g fr frward flight. When mving up r dwn, hwever, the birds based their mtr cmmands n the cast light patterns they saw.
This special ability helps hummingbirds fly safely and quickly. This knwledge culd be useful fr imprving drne(无人机)technlgy, helping engineers develp better ways fr drnes t predict and respnd t changes in their surrundings. “If we can develp a mathematical mdel fr this visual prcessing, it culd be very useful fr drnes.” says B Cheng, a mechanical engineer, at Pennsylvania State University.

B. By changing the psitin f the feeder.
C. By prjecting mving light patterns.
D. By adjusting the brightness f the tunnel.
30. What did the researchers think f hummingbirds’ reactin?

31. Which field is mre likely t benefit frm the research?
A. Wild bird prtectin.B. Math-based game design.

Sensry-based fd educatin given t 3-5 year-ld children in the kindergarten increases their willingness t chse vegetables and fruit, accrding t a new study frm the University f Eastern Finland.
The researchers used the sensry-based fd educatin methd Sapere, which makes use f children’s natural way f relying n all f the five senses when learning new things. The researchers cmpared children in different kindergarten grups. Sme were ffered sensry-based fd educatin, while thers weren’t. Children were ffered a snack buffet cntaining different vegetables and fruit t chse frm, and the researchers tk phts f their plates t analyze their willingness t chse and eat these fd items.
The findings shw that sensry-based fd educatin increased children’s willingness t chse vegetables and fruit, especially amng children whse mthers have a lwer educatinal backgrund. On average, children f lwer educated parents tend t eat less vegetables and fruit. This is hw fd educatin given in the kindergarten can help even ut dietary gap between families.
“Anther interesting finding is that the Sapere fd educatin methd als seems t imprve the eating atmsphere in kindergarten grups. This encuraged children wh were picky eaters t chse a mre diverse selectin n their plate,” Kähkönen explains.
Psitive and persnal fd-related experiences gained in the kindergarten can help adjust dietary preferences in a directin that is beneficial fr health. Dietary preferences learned in early childhd ften stick with a persn all the way t adlescence and adulthd.
32. What can we knw abut the Sapere methd?
A. It imprves kids’ five senses.
B. It enables kids t read mre bks.
C. It supplies varius healthy fd t kids.
D. It invlves kids in active fd-related activities.

Even after the debris was cleared, I culd still sense Luella's srrw fr her lst garden. My heart went ut t her, knwing hw much she had cherished thse tulips that she had devted s much energy t. Yet nw, they were all gne. Determined t restre the beauty that nce thrived, I suggested that we rebuild the garden. Luella agreed delightedly. With each bulb carefully planted and watered, the new tulip seedlings filled the garden nce again , which symblized the spruting f a new friendship between us, as well as the turning that I finally gt embraced by this new envirnment. My mm was right: It's mre blessed t give than t receive because when yu give, yu may receive smething unexpected in return.

W: Gd evening, everyne. I recently learnt Arabic in Cair as part f my degree. My interest in the language was due t the passin f ur Arabic lecturer and as the curse prgressed, my interest in the culture als grew with it. I cnsidered studying in the Middle East, but ultimately decided n Cair due t its energetic cultural scene. Hwever, in the city, we faced sme challenges, including difficulties finding a htel and accmmdatin as we were a grup f unmarried individuals. Once settled, the culture shck was intense fr sme f us. One member f ur grup returned hme within the first week. Luckily I became accustmed t the life in Cair gradually. The biggest challenge f learning Arabic is the discnnectin between the written and the spken frms. Despite these challenges, learning Arabic has been a rewarding experience, including absrbing myself in the culture and getting t knw the lcals and even negtiating at a lcal market. Highlights were being invited t a traditinal Arabic meal at ne f the lcals’ hme and being able t cnfidently cmmunicate. Overall, this experience was utside f my cmfrt zne and allwed me t learn and grw in interesting ways. I encurage thers t cnsider invlving themselves in new cultures and languages. Thanks fr listening.
