Read the intrductin t Antine de Saint-Exupéry and answer the questins.
Antine de Saint-Exupéry (1900–1944) was a French writer and pilt. As a yung by, he was bsessed with aerplanes, riding in ne fr the first time at the age f 12. He spent much f his life flying and writing abut his adventures. Saint-Exupéry’s mst successful wrk, The Little Prince, is ne f the best-selling bks ever published. The stry was prbably inspired by his plane crash in the desert in 1935. Saint-Exupéry nearly died, and wandered arund fr fur days befre being rescued. In 1944, Saint-Exupéry left n a wartime missin ver ccupied France, frm which he never returned. Althugh the remains f his plane were discvered in 2000, Saint-Exupéry’s bdy has never been fund, and the cause f his death remains unknwn.
1. What experience made the authr write The Little Prince?
The stry was prbably inspired by his plane crash in the desert in 1935.
2. What kind f persn d yu think the Saint-Exupéry was?
He was a persn with great imaginatin.
Once when I was six years ld I saw a magnificent picture in a bk, called True Stries frm Nature, abut the primeval frest. It was a picture f a ba cnstrictr in the act f swallwing an animal. Here is a cpy f the drawing.
In the bk it said: “Ba cnstrictrs swallw their prey whle, withut chewing it. After that they are nt able t mve, and they sleep thrugh the six mnths that they need fr digestin.”
I pndered deeply, then, ver the adventures f the jungle. And after sme wrk with a clred pencil I succeeded in making my first drawing. My Drawing Number One. It lked like this:
I shwed my masterpiece t the grwn-ups, and asked them whether the drawing frightened them.
But they answered: “Frighten? Why shuld anyne be frightened by a hat?”
My drawing was nt a picture f a hat. It was a picture f a ba cnstrictr digesting an elephant. But since the grwn-ups were nt able t understand it, I made anther drawing: I drew the inside f the ba cnstrictr, s that the grwn-ups culd see it clearly. They always need t have things explained.
My Drawing Number Tw lked like this:
The grwn-ups’ respnse, this time, was t advise me t lay aside my drawings f ba cnstrictrs, whether frm the inside r the utside, and devte myself instead t gegraphy, histry, arithmetic and grammar. That is why, at the age f six, I gave up what might have been a magnificent career as a painter. I had been disheartened by the failure f my Drawing Number One and my Drawing Number Tw. Grwn-ups never understand anything by themselves, and it is tiresme fr children t be always and frever explaining things t them.
S then I chse anther prfessin, and learned t pilt airplanes. I have flwn a little ver all parts f the wrld; and it is true that gegraphy has been very useful t me. At a glance I can distinguish China frm Arizna. If ne gets lst in the night, such knwledge is valuable.
In the curse f this life, I have had a great many encunters with a great many peple wh have been cncerned with matters f cnsequence. I have lived a great deal amng grwn-ups. I have seen them intimately, clse at hand. And that hasn’t much imprved my pinin f them.
Whenever I met ne f them wh seemed t me at all clear-sighted, I tried the experiment f shwing him my Drawing Number One, which I have always kept. I wuld try t find ut, s, if this was a persn f true understanding. But, whever it was, he, r she, wuld always say:
“That is a hat.”
Then I wuld never talk t that persn abut ba cnstrictrs, r primeval frests, r stars. I wuld bring myself dwn t his level. I wuld talk t him abut bridge, and glf, and plitics, and neckties. And the grwn-up wuld be greatly pleased t have met such a sensible man.
(Excerpt frm The Little Prince by Antine de Saint-Exupéry)
Chse the authr’s attitude twards grwn-ups and find evidence t supprt yur chice.
1 Grwn-ups are mre practical than children. They want t teach children knwledge that will be useful in the future.
2 Grwn-ups are n better than children. They lack imaginatin and nly care abut matters f cnsequence.
3 Grwn-ups are mre knwledgeable than children. They can understand everything by themselves.
Read the sentences frm the passage and answer the questins.
What des the authr really mean by these sentences?
Mst f the adults I have met are the same. They fcus n practical matters nly and seldm pay attentin t imaginatin r creativity. If I pretend t think the way they d, the adults will cnclude that I am sensible and mature.
What figure f speech des the authr use? Hw des this figure f speech help t express the authr’s attitude?
Irny. The figure f speech enables the authr t indicate his pinin f adults’ behaviur and values by stressing such things.
1 What were the grwn-ups’ respnses t the authr’s Drawing Number One and Drawing Number Tw? Why d yu think they respnded in this way?
2 Accrding t the authr, what is a child’s mst valuable trait? D yu agree with him?
3 After reading the tw passages in this unit, think abut what yu may acquire and lse as yu grw up. Share yur ideas with the class.
Wrk in grups. Give a talk abut yur attitude twards grwn-ups.
1 Decide whether yu agree with the authr’s attitude twards grwn-ups and why.
2 Think f sme examples t supprt yur pinins and make ntes.
3 Organise yur talk fllwing the steps belw.
• Explain the authr’s attitude twards grwn-ups.
• State yur wn pinins.
• Give supprting examples.
• Cnclude by summarising yur pinins.
4 Give yur talk t the class.
Nw think abut yur perfrmance during the grup discussin. Hw well did yu actively participate and cntribute ideas?
Read the bk review and find the infrmatin n the right.
The Little Prince was written and illustrated by the French writer Antine de Saint-Exupéry during Wrld War II. It is a children’s fantasy bk, but it is als enjyed by adults.
It tells a stry abut a pilt wh has crashed in the desert. While he is trying t fix his aerplane, a little prince cmes t him. Visiting frm anther planet, the little prince recunts his adventures t the pilt, and the tw becme friends.
The bk talks abut the imprtance f lking beneath the surface f things t uncver their real meanings. I like it because it is simple, and yet it really made me think a lt abut life and death, lve and respnsibility, friendship and lneliness. One f the mst memrable characters in the bk is a rse, which the little prince fell in lve with. I was really tuched by the line – “It’s the time yu spent n yur rse that makes yur rse s imprtant.” – because it shws hw we frm special bnds with thers by caring and taking respnsibility fr them.
Persnally, I think this is a tuching bk that everyne shuld read, whatever their age.
the title f the bk
• the name f the authr
• the genre
• a memrable character
• a qute frm the bk
Read the bk review again and answer the questins.
1 What is the plt f the bk?
2 What is the key message f the bk?
3 What des the reviewer think f the bk?
Chse a bk that means a lt t yu. Plan a review f it and make ntes.
Nw write yur bk review.
Wrk in pairs. Make imprvements t each ther’s bk reviews and share them with the class.
Wrk in grups and discuss hw t make a ne-year
self-imprvement plan. Cnsider the fllwing:
what yu have learnt frm the past
• what yu plan t achieve
• what yu plan t avid
• what yu plan t vercme
