Lk at the chart and answer the questins.
1 What are the tp three things students frm this schl spend their mney n? 2 What else d yu think students ften spend their mney n?
Nw think abut what yu spend yur mney n. Draw a chart t shw yur spending habits and share it with the class.
Bks and magazines, schl supplies and clthes.
Read the passage and find ut the meaning f the title.
The spending pwer f yung peple varies frm persn t persn. Each, hwever, is faced with the same questin: what t d with their mney? Sme handle this less well than thers. Recent headlines have seen mre and mre teens maxing ut their parents’ credit cards n games r ther nline activities.
In cntrast t these big spenders, there are als teens that prve age is n barrier t making gd use f mney. With the help f her grandmther, eight-year-ld Khle Thmpsn started making “Kare Bags” fr the hmeless peple in her district. Inside the bags are necessities such as tthpaste, sap and scks, bught first with her pcket mney and then thrugh crwd funding. These items helped t make the lives f pr and hmeless peple a little bit easier. On receiving a Kare Bag, ne wman said, “Yu make me feel like a human being.”
Hwever peple intend t use their mney, managing it seems t be unprecedentedly imprtant t yunger generatins. A 2016 study said 17 states f the US require high schl students t take curses in persnal finances. Fr thse wh have n access t curses, help might be at hand thanks t Jerry Witkvsky and his methd f using fur jars t teach teenagers hw t spend their mney wisely.
When Jerry’s grandchildren turned 13, his present t each f them was three jars: ne fr Spending, ne fr Saving, and anther fr Giving – he has since added a furth jar fr Investing. It was frm then n that his grandchildren started t be in cntrl f what t d with the mney they receive: spend, save, invest r give? Jerry’s birthday present t his grandchildren is, hwever, much mre than mney and a few jars – he is giving them the pprtunity t learn lifelng values.
The value taught with the Spending jar is that yu are respnsible fr yur wn happiness. Mney gives yu independence and the pprtunity t buy smething yu like. After all, it’s OK t be nice t yurself!
While the Spending jar is abut the here and nw, the Saving jar gives yu a visin fr the future. This culd invlve saving fr university, but it culd als mean saving fr that special smething yu’ve seen in the stres – it’s up t yu.The Investing jar nt nly represents a visin fr the future, but gives the pprtunity t build fr the future. Althugh this culd likewise invlve putting aside mney fr yur university educatin, it als means investing in yurself.
The Giving jar is all abut kindness and helping. Whether yu want t help ut a friend, give mney t an animal charity r t children in anther cuntry, it’s yur mney t give t whatever cause yu believe in.The wider aim f the jars is t encurage teenagers t think mre bjectively abut mney and the things that it can d, s that they grw up understanding, if yu like, the value f the valuable. In this way, they will be better equipped in their adult lives t make infrmed chices abut hw they use the mney they have. Indeed, the small change inside their jars culd mean a big change in hw they manage their mney.
Organise infrmatin frm the passage and cmplete the diagram.
    yur wn happiness
the pprtunity t buy smething yu like
that special smething yu’ve seen in the stres
    build fr the future
    investing in yurself
    kindness and helping
    whatever cause yu believe in
1 Why des the authr use the example f Khle Thmpsn? 2 Hw des the passage inspire yu t imprve yur spending habits? 3 If yu were given 1,000 yuan, hw much mney wuld yu put in each jar? Give yur reasns. 4 What methds f self-management have yu learnt in the tw reading passages in this unit? What else d yu need t imprve?
Wrk in grups. Give a talk abut yur understanding f the values represented by the fur jars.
1 Read the passage again and think abut which jar yu believe is the mst imprtant. 2 Organise yur ideas by cmpleting the ntes.
3 Share yur ideas with the grup. 4 Chse a grup member t summarise yur grup’s pinins t the class.
Nw think abut the methd Jerry Witkvsky used t give advice. Hw did it help yu t better understand the tpic?
Read the stry and answer the questins.
There nce was a little by wh had a bad temper. His father gave him a bag f nails and tld him that every time he lst his temper, he must hammer a nail int the back f the fence.
The first day, the by hammered s many nails int the fence that his father had t give him a whle new bag. Over the next few weeks, as he learnt t cntrl his anger, he hammered fewer and fewer nails int the fence each day. He had learnt that it was easier t hld his temper than t hammer nails int the fence. Finally, the day came when the by didn’t lse his temper all day, nt even nce. He tld his father, wh said that nw the by shuld pull ut ne nail fr each day that he was able t hld his temper.
The days passed by and the by was finally able t tell his father that all the nails were gne. The father tk his sn and led him t the fence. He said, “Yu’ve dne well, sn, but lk at all the hles in the fence! That fence will never be the same. When yu say smething in anger, it leaves a hle in smene’s heart, just like yur nails have left hles in the fence. It desn’t matter hw many times yu say srry. The hle is still there.”
Make ntes abut the stry in Activity 5.
Wrk in pairs. Make imprvements t each ther’s reflectins and share them with the class.
Wrk in grups. Talk abut the meanings f the qutes and cmplete the table.
